Michael Mann is probably the most intellectual filmmaker working.
I never understood the love for this film. Yeah, it has some over the top (not amazing) performances, and some great action pieces.. but it's a poorly laid out film. Especially the relationship with Pacino.
I think it is a lot like Scarface... had some big actors and hype behind it but massively overrated as a film.
Pacino is an awful actor, he's always "just Pacino".
De Niro isn't much better.
