Back when being a director meant actually being a director, and not some nepo-baby dipshit who made a shitty short film to legitimize yourself before your uncle/dad/father-in-law gives you a gig directing hundred-million-dollar blockbusters.

One is a harrowing depiction of addiction in a cinema verite style, and the other is a surrealist dark comedy, so it's really hard to compare them. The Ferrara one had a much greater impact on me personally. Keitel delivers one of the best performances of the 90s, and Zoe Lund's script raises interesting questions about the nature of forgiveness and redemption. I love Herzog and Nic Cage, but that 'version' (the films really have nothing to do with each other beyond the idea of a "bad lieutenant") is not really operating on the same artistic level, even if it's a great film when considered on it's own merit.

Pretty much. They're both great but the Keitel one is the stronger film by a mile. Watch 'em both though.

Port of Call New Orleans is shit. Nic Cage stopped caring by that point and was busy turning himself into a meme and Herzog had already lost his spark for feature films well before that.

Abel Ferrara is not a good director and his movies suck, but they're exploitative enough to generate interest.

He’s too fricked up to be a “literally me” character I think.
