The former. All I see from the video is apparently a great many meticulously hand drawn frames, and I don't understand how that implies a cautionary tale. Did the project come out poorly due to the amount of work that needed to be done or something?

it's a very long story, and it's all centred around this man, richard williams. he unfortunately died in 2019, but he was one of the best animators in the world, being most famous for the incredibly well-done animation on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. he also wrote The Animator's Survival Kit, which is basically mandatory reading for any aspiring animator.

even before roger rabbit, he was working on his magnum opus named The Thief and the Cobbler, which is what you see in that webm. this film was bouncing around in the 1960s and finally came out in the 90s. williams was an perfectionist in every definition of the word, helping to explain why the film took such an ungodly amount of time to finish, except it was never really finished as the people financing the project werent happy with how the film was heading. to put it simply, the people financing the project werent happy, they put someone else in and turned it into something different to what williams envisioned and, surprise surprise, was not very good. the story is much more complicated than this and i suggest you read up on it yourself.

                Thanks, that's interesting

I often think about a conversation I had with my cousin.
We happened to watch a trailer for the "live-action remake" of Mulan and discussed it.
I wondered why I'd bother to watch such a movie.
He said that if I had kids then I might want them to see it.
I countered that I would simply show my kids the original movie since there's been no deterioration in quality since I was a kid.
He agreed and we both concluded that the remake was pointless.

I honestly think this was the worst Disney live action adaptation. They removed all the songs, all the side characters, and made Mulan a superhero instead of being a normal woman who worked hard to become a soldier.

she was always a girlboss even in the original movie, did you forget the part where she becomes stronger and better than all the men at the end of the training montage?

        Anonymous

She was the only one there with any motivation which made her apply herself, outperform her peers, and inspire them to apply themselves and they all end up on equal footing by the end of the song. That isn't being a girlboss.

You'd have a point if you'd just focus on women being categorically weaker than men even when they try, but you didn't do that.

bullshit, she is the only one who is able to climb on top of the pole, she is shown running faster than everybody with the weights, she even beats the commander guy in hand to hand combat, which clearly makes her the strongest person in the whole army. she is a complete girlboss.

            Anonymous

She climbs the pole by figuring out a way to use mechanical advantage to get around the difficulties of the task and not giving up until she can do it. Everyone else just tries one thing and then stops.

You know that scene in Captain America where he pulls the bolt out of the flag pole so he can get the free ride home after others have tried, watch people fail, and conclude it's impossible?

            Exactly the same shit.

                Some, maybe. Not all.

Sheng is shown to be stronger. So is the huge unit.

The weedy guy who smashes his teeth out? Yeah, okay, but that's hardly "all."

Not stronger. Smarter and more driven, but Sheng could still completely body her without trying.

        >a girlboss is someone who works hard and does well
No. A girlboss is someone who starts off as the best and the movie keeps sucking their dick the whole time about how great they are with their only challenge being a woman. The older soldiers are fat cowardly losers who get dunked on by her after she trains all night. She gets BTFO in the beginning as a woman, but trains to “be a man” and actually gets stronger.

      Cancer.
They did the same with the Star Wars' Rey: an unstoppable superheroine who not only never needed anyone to help her but also needed no development arc.

she was always a girlboss even in the original movie, did you forget the part where she becomes stronger and better than all the men at the end of the training montage?

No. She was the smartest but not the strongest so all her tactics were about outsmarting her enemy. She managed to make friends on the way: we see the whole process and how they are honestly touched by her simpathy. They help her in strength and numbers when the ocassion rise. By the end of the movie not only her family's honor is restored but she is also in control of her own life. All in all a pretty good story.
The fact that they force a woman to go through all the crap men regularly go is the cherry on top.

She gets a good hit on him that leaves him impressed. Watch the scene again he doesn’t look hurt by the punch, he’s satisfied with her and the teams improvements. It’s also a quick way to tell the audience that she has gotten better at combat while also showing that Shen is beginning to take an interest in her. I know it’s hard for your reductionist brain to understand but try to think with nuance
