It reminds me of what Katy t3h PeNgU1N oF d00m would be if it were in movie form. The humor is too try hard "random". It is glaringly obvious it is propaganda aimed at older western asians who aren't assimilating to globohomosexual fast enough. With that in mind it also makes sense why it would win so many ~~*awards*~~.

Too goofy. Feels like a movie made for teenagers. Something like American Pie. The struggles are clouded in silliness to the point that you can't even relate to the character. In comparison, a movie like don't look up has the right amount of satire and the right amount of seriousness. There's clear escalation btn when seriousness fails and when goofyness sets in as a replacement. This movie has no border, it's just silliness from the start. Can't do your taxes, ok, I'll save you with this stupid multi-verse trope. Then I'll delay the gay struggle till the end and reintroduce the multi-verse trope to make it a believable struggle. I'm more inclined to relate to the mothers struggle with her father than the zoomers struggle with her gayness. That's the most real relationship in this movie.

Why was the creator of this movie obsessed with lesbianism? And was there a part of the universe where her daughter was straight and lived happily ever after or what she doomed to being an angsty lesbo in every single world?

there's three mentions of the daughter being a lesbian. Once at the beginning, once in the first half of the ending, and in the last half of the ending. two of those times its just said in conversation, and the other it's a joke. Just the latest and greatest of current thing things. Lesbianism and domestic violence go hand-in-hand and the entire "sexuality" is beset on all sides by contradiction. even for something comparatively recent like movies, you're still looking at like 100 years of filmmaking compared to 1 when you're talking about old vs new

Perhaps I'm old but I didn't get the hype.

The first 10 minutes was a complete mess. I couldn't understand the dialogue, the broken accent, the constant switch between english and chinese. Why? Chaotic in order to be chaotic? It just felt amateurish. Instead of engaging the audience I was put off. And the movie went through a lot only to point out that a family member is a unit in the family. The message felt rather misguidedsince it was about accepting your only child being lesbic (lessening the chance of reproducing).

The movie wasn't as funny either. It was like a Stephen Chow movie but more awkward, less refined and less emotional. The jokes lacked depth, were too much in your face and insultingly childish (farts and hot dogs). The action was alright and innovative, would like to have seen more of wizards duelign with clown-magic but the final fight was subpar, a hug instead of a big bombastic explosion. The acting by JLC and her character was perhaps the best, too bad she didn't get the chance to be the monster that she was hyped up to be in the beginning.

they're being audited by the IRS which is enough to throw any adult into a panic but Evelyn has to balance that with throwing a party for her patrons, her daughter hating her, her husband wanting to divorce her and her dad piling expectations on her. it's obviously being played as chaotic and stressful and not something easily processable from both her perspective and a viewer's perspective. the movie's title literally points to maximalism and the intro rolls with that by being overwhelming. so it's probably not just that you're old just dumb if that's a point of contention

        >audited by the IRS
Maybe don't buy fricking trash, that's exactly what the irs lady pointed out
        >daugther hating her
That's not what the film portrays, it only shows her dissapointment and the kid failing to meet normal standars (don't be fricking gay) and that's all spewed as "my dad won't like it, it's never hinted as her not being somewhat ok with it
        >divorce
That happen after the irs stuff

what does this moralism bullshit have to do with the intro being intentionally chaotic from a filmmaking perspective? I don't care about your opinion on their choices, I'm listing why it wasn't [Chaotic in order to be chaotic], it was chaotic because the protag's relations were straining her from every direction

I don't care about your opinion on their choices, I'm listing why it wasn't [Chaotic in order to be chaotic], it was chaotic because the protag's relations were straining her from every direction

It was chaotic because they constantly shifted languages, made multiple fast edits, forced the audience to focus on details, remember certain aspects, introduced characters without giving any background info of them. I know this all came afterwards, I just felt it was amateurish. Chaotic for the sake of being chaotic.

        >not something easily processable from both her perspective and a viewer's perspective
This is what I don't get. How do you just happen in that state. She did no drugs. She wasn't stupid. I mean, in another parallell universe she was a nobel prize winner and a computer tech savant.

        And like

        >audited by the IRS
Maybe don't buy fricking trash, that's exactly what the irs lady pointed out
        >daugther hating her
That's not what the film portrays, it only shows her dissapointment and the kid failing to meet normal standars (don't be fricking gay) and that's all spewed as "my dad won't like it, it's never hinted as her not being somewhat ok with it
        >divorce
That happen after the irs stuff

said. The whole audited by the IRS is a dumb excuse when they point out in the movie that she set herself up to it. It was a mess because they wanted it to be a mess.

Compare the intro to Groundhog Day. A movie with a similar theme. But this one takes the time and introduces you to everything in a solid pace. I does not feel the need to be chaotic just to demonstrate that you can confuse your audience. Everything Everywhere All at Once does that. It wants to confuse the audience, because the producers knows that the base story can't hold it on its own.

Word of god from the creators is that she has undiagnosed ADHD, and they ended up writing this character with that in mind after researching it so it's one of those things where you can either take it or leave it. Those other universes are also those where her life took more "correct" paths. It's explicitly said her laundry and taxes universe is the one where she's a loser that basically did everything "wrong".

In an infinite multiverse no not really because it necessarily opens up versions of yourself that would be homeless and drugged up or kept as a torture trophy chained up in some serial killer's basement. I didn't accept it logically but it's not going to bother me narratively because I understand what it's getting at. It's easy for me to suspend disbelief here because anything that enters speculative fiction territory enters territory where it's hard to be infallible unless you're doing hard sci-fi with enclosed systems like Primer

but doesn't that make the movie less great?

should not narration aim to be coherent? is it not chaotic to just ignore logic?

    Every scene:
    -preachy earnest life lesson dialogue
    -kung fu dance coreography
    -jump to new random location
    -repeat for 2 hours.

I agree it's technically impressive but how did you not get sick of almost the same thing happening with the same result over and over?

I mentally checked out by the halfway point because literally every scene is just the mom doing her thing and you know in the ending it will all be ok, since it's such a safe and mainstream movie.

We were told the stakes but it never felt like they were real or mattered.
