They tried to with Furiosa. Praetorian Jack was meant to be played by a black actor but he dropped out.

i wish we had gotten more of the gritty, grounded, plausible pre-apocalypse type films in this universe. The first was absolute kino. but miller had to go on the jenkem and turn it into comic book stuff. I feel the same way about First blood and subsequent rambo films. Don't get me wrong, they're enjoyable in their own right, but they're not teh same.

      >but miller had to go on the jenkem and turn it into comic book stuff.
As if the first movie wasn't already much like a comic book.

      ?si=0TQgE6riTeB3nYuV

Theres a reason why Fury Road concept art was first shown in Heavy Metal magazine. Miller is obviously a huge french comic book fan.

        Anonymous

sure, but this is still something you can watch and say hey this could happen down the road from me, it's grounded and plausible in our universe. The succeeding films did away with any sort of relatable universe setting or concept. maybe i'm just moronic and can't explain it well, but to me in watching the films it's a significant tonal difference and makes me consider the films different entirely, not in the same vain. i don't dislike road warrior, but it could easily be a different universe that's unrelated, etc.

Yea the setting was grounded but 80% of the characters were so over-the-top it was obvious comic book territory. If you just want realistic misery porn in a realistic setting, watch The Road.

Road Warrior is what you'd get in an apocalypse if you left that small town where the first movie takes place. Except for the funny costumes.

        >Miller is obviously a huge french comic book fan
I'm sure he is, but Fury Road itself (and the character of Furiosa) and that multi-layer classic car design aesthetic was developed by 2000ad Artist Brendan McCarthy back in the late 90s.

He'd been nuts for Mad Max and Punk stuff since the 70s. He did a pre-Waterworld MM ripoff comic called Freakwave in the 80s in between stints on Judge Dredd and doing other movie design work (The original TMNT movie for example and Reboot in the 90s - that's all his style).

        https://offthebeatenpanel.blogspot.com/2012/08/spotlight-freakwave-1983-1985.html
        https://offthebeatenpanel.blogspot.com/2012/08/cult-classic-comics-freakwave-pt-2.html

His biggest influence, from his own mouth, was Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. He just took all their hallucinogenic stuff and went more glam/punk/post-punk with it. Much more fluid/liquid brushwork. He's an odd-fit for American Comics but he has worked in them fairly often. HGe's really good at that type of Heightened Americana you see in the Fury Road designs. I think he was also a skinhead back in the day, so that informs stuff like the Warboys too.

It's worth noting all this because his aesthetic is very unique. None of the French artists have been able to match this unique angle he has. He's probably the most "Mad Max-aligned" artist on the planet, sensibility wise.

First act and last act are decent. It gets bogged down in the middle, and lacks the brutality and blood that set Road Warrior/ the original apart. Still worth watching if you're a fan of the other flicks, and it probably suffers less for not being the last Mad Max film anymore.

As an Aussie, I think they actually missed an opportunity with the history man in the new film. Should have been an abo elder with white writing all over him.

Also I actually liked Chris as dementus, but it was a shame how that nose looked in most of the scenes. Really detracted from the character.

I also hate how our accent sounds when they put on the accent next to non Aussie sounding people. Makes it seem forced and over the top.
