GAINAX closes down after 40 years.

It's over. Not because it's Gainax only, it shows what's coming up in the near future.

Good. It's an industry that relies on underpaying and exploiting animators. It deserves to die.

How? This franchise has been milked for 30 years of merchandising. Pachinko machines, Louis Vuitton, video games, gasha, figurines... where did all the money go from all this bullshit?

Gainax hasn't had the rights to Eva in a long time. Studio Khara has had them since Anno made the studio.

      TLDR - incompetent leadership
Its business conditions began to deteriorate around 2012, due to careless management by executives, and the company lost its anime production capabilities following an exodus of its creative staff. In addition, its representative director was arrested in 2019 for alleged sexual abuse of a minor.

The main thrust of it is that Gainax didn't own Evangelion outright. Anno had retained the rights to the lion's share of royalties, so when he went off to found a new studio (Khara), he arranged a deal with Gainax for the royalties to be paid to that studio instead, effectively using the Evabux to fund his autistic passion projects like Godzilla and Kamen Rider. Meanwhile, Gainax has been in a fiscal black hole for over a decade at this point, with a sizable list of undelivered projects piled up, and around 2016 they just stopped paying the royalties to Khara. So they got sued, court-ordered to pay the owed amount, and that left the studio basically destitute (the last anime Gainax put out was in 2015, and was a weird magical girl tie-in series funded by fricking Subaru). They've just been going through the motions ever since, looking for new sources of funding to finally deliver on those projects, "Uru in Blue coming soon guise! Leijiverse movies are definitely on the way!"

Knew they were in dire straits when they sold Gurren Lagann and then Panty and Stocking to Trigger.

Khara made out like badits during the bankruptcy though. They snagged all the remaining IPs. Release the pubic hair cut of Aim for the Top, Anno-san.

One of their CEOs and an accounted were arrested for accounting fraud, the new CEO tried to shift into the restaurant game and failed, and then was later arrested for sexual assault on a minor. New leadership found that they had also given out lots of deals and money without rights owners permission or payback schemes and incurred a lot debts as a result of both. They started taking in loans to try to survive and then a debt collector firm came around sniffing and they decided to throw in the towel. They also got sued a few times iirc.

GAINAX had horrible financial management, Anno said as such a few years ago. They basically went all in on series and were risking bankruptcy by the final episode. It didn't happen only once, but several times. One pretty well-known example is that they had just cents in their bank account by the time they were doing the final episode of Gurren Lagann.

They've been a shell of a company coasting on merch rights for about that long. The people who actually made shit left long ago.

    >different kind of studio
    >built and run by anime fans
Why exactly would someone work the slave labor conditions of an anime company if they weren't fans?
And yeah I guess companies before this would have been run by suits but this still goes back to why work slave labor conditions, plenty of easier jobs out there

The most recent things I've seen from Gainax was Medaka Box (shit, I fricking hated it), Panty & Stocking (good), Hanamaru Youchien (good, I think, don't remember)
Didn't watch that shooting club show, Idol show and goth e-girl detective thing, that's probably everything they made from 2010 onwards

Since Anno lost his mind over time the people who mattered are in Trigger now anyway.

    Typical Gainax Ending

Gainax has been a zombie company for almost 20 years. The last show of any relevance that they produced was Panty and Stocking in 2010, and they were already a hollowed out shell of their former selves by that point. Talking about Gainax in 2024 is like talking about KMart.

This changes literally nothing because there's no new space to be filled. Gainax is still alive in Studio Trigger.

I tried watching NGE last year and it’s filled with the types of action anime tropes that I hate. FLCL is their true masterpiece.

Gainax has been virtually dead for a long time
Anno made his own company and left. The other main staff moved to different studios too.
