No one believes the series will be finished. Even if WOW gets released a dream of spring won’t come out and that wouldn’t even be the last book of the series anyway. You’re better off reading fanfic, unironically

Magic is starting to manifest in the world of ASOIAF. If Sanderson puts his hands on it Melisandre will be throwing Gokakyu No Jutsu on the first chapter and Arya summoning Nymeria on Bravos. It doesn't work. George is much more conservative.

He's not super old or anything. All you zoomers think he's ready for the retirement home but he's not even retirement age yet. Just let the man write. It was a huge mistake turning the books into a movie series because of how much it disrupted his life, making it take longer to make the books. But he's writing at a normal pace and is not a sickly ancient man, and he's not even finished his final series yet.

The average life expectancy in America is 77 years old. Martin is not a healthy man and is exceedingly overweight. Even forgetting the fact that he is aged and unquestionably degrading mentally, which will impact his writing, he is absolutely not fucking writing at a normal pace. His books have been completed at a glacial pace following the release of Storm of Swords, which is coincidentally when his writing began to slip. He absolutely will not finish this novel, he is going to be dead in under 10 years and he is going to spend it living lavishly and not toiling away on a series he is already too old to complete.

The "Legacy" of GOT was getting lucky and starting a Tolkienesque grand fantasy series when there hadn't been a heavily promoted one since The Sword of Shannara in the 70's. LOTR fags embraced his derivative book like it was actually good, when it really wasn't.

Entertaining doesn't imply objectively better quality retard. GOT has logical loopholes and isn't as fleshed out in world building as Lotr but given the choice to reread either GOT or Lotr most neutrals will pick GOT in a heartbeat, it's much more fun, fast paced and engaging than Lotr. I could barely keep myself hooked on my FIRST read of Lotr, let alone a reread.

        Anonymous

First of all, GOT is pretty fucking far from being grand fantasy which I now guess you didn't watch it. And second the reason for GOT's success wasn't the more "fantastical" elements, but the political intrigue and disciplined expectancy break.

          >I now guess you didn't watch it!

He prefers, by far, the deconstruction, or more accurately, the ripping apart aspect of a story. The betrayal, murder, people being tortured. But once he's done it, he doesn't care any more. He's had his fun, it's boring now.

So he goes off and finds new things to tear apart. Which is why you get things like, say, Dorne rising as a plot. But once he's torn that down, where does he go next? He doesn't WANT to take the next step, which is the reconstruction and rebuilding (the "dream of spring"). That bores him even more than continuing to torture characters that he's spent years ripping apart.

It's an almost sociopathic enjoyment of seeing people suffer.

Guam is a heavily Roman Catholic Christian island and there are many other Christian religions here. Most people here have read more than one or two lines from the Bible. You should give it a try. If you find it difficult to read the Bible, then the Jehovah's Witnesses have some picture books and pamphlets you can read to make learning stuff from the both the Old and New Testaments easier.

And no, I'm not a religious zealot. Why would I want to be a religious zealot? But I do enjoy Western literature like Lord of the Rings which is written by a devout Christian. I can probably get more enjoyment from LotR if I do try to read the Bible every now and then. But I'm not going to force the Christian religion onto other people, that would be like Leftist University professors brainwashing students into becoming LGBT followers who scream "Nazi!" whenever they encounter anyone who doesn't think exactly like them.

The Pagan Romans and Greeks built Western civilization and the Christians inherited that civilization. The Western portion of Europe that fell to the dark ages eventually rediscovered Western civilization that was persevered by the Roman Byzantine Christians. After finally beating off the Muslim Arabs, Turks, and Berbers, Western Europe spread throughout the rest of the world trying to bring the light of civilization and Christianity with them.

Anyway, I'll leave the Christian zealotry to more competent people.

I didn't say his writing was bad, it's just the same as Sanderson effectively. 99/100 fantasy writers are telling you a fun story about an interesting world, not giving you a deep message. It's like listening to kids arguing over their favorite power ranger, it's not worth that level of scrutiny to someone that's really invested in fiction as a whole.

I don’t think he’s lazy. He’s doing a lot of work. He’s constantly writing. The problem is he’s not working on ASOIAF’s final two books. He spends time working on these tv shows, writing all these extra books in the AOIAF verse, writing his blog, talking on twitter, etc.
I don’t think that’s the life of a lazy person. I think he’s actively choosing to not finish the series.

He's definitely hit some sort of structural block with ASOIAF as like you say he's been able to pump out Dunk & Egg and Fire and Blood etc. I read that initially GRRM had thought about doing a five year timeskip after ASOS to get the Starks in particular aged up enough to be able to logically progress. This would make sense that he's not sure what to do after not doing the skip. Honestly at this point he'd just be better to work with someone to get the last two out so he can go back to writing the side books he actually enjoys doing.

He said he wrote himself into a corner with one thing but if Im honest his work on other projects has hardly been groundbreaking. It seems like a copout because he wont put the time in to finish asoiaf. Im resigned hes never finishing it and is too proud/retarded to get help like Robert Jordan did. Sure the last WoT book is lower quality but at least it finished the series. I agree with other anons that in all likelhood the rights to it all will be acquired and they will draft in someone to finish it all. If his wife is smart she sells it with his notes for a fortune and lives comfy.

Jordan was a fucking prose machine. I didn't even half cringe a single time during any of his many books but cringed audibly during what was obviously one of Shaitanson's first chapters. That being said it was still better than leaving everything unfinished.

BotNS is rather hopeful, ultimately, and it's still a Christian story. Despite there being a lot of dark things in it, it ultimately tries to end on a high/hopeful note and Severian does prevent the sun from going out. He also becomes less of a sociopath by the end of the story, and outright lies about things to make himself seem like more of a badass. Although he also doesn't seem to understand rape so he might have been rapier than he lets on.

Any other hack writer would take over the books and change them to suit his/her view of what it should be. Look at what that homosexual did to the Wheel of Time show.

He's right he'd be a bad fit, but not because of the pessimism. Sanderson is an extreme planner. He uses an outline, puts a lot of thought into story structure, writes over ten drafts of each book, uses alpha reader feedback to adjust things, etc. He's as far as you can get some GRRMs make it up as you go approach.

For Mistborn he wrote the entire trilogy then went back and redrafted the whole thing to make sure book one properly set up book three.

There is no way it can be done in such short work. It would make season 8 look like a saga for him to have it done in 2 books. Dany has barely moved in 5 fucking books, she's nowhere near getting to Westeros, and Faegon is still an ancillary background character that is nowhere near acting in the capacity everyone has already figured out.

          Anonymous

          >Dany has barely moved in 5 fucking books
That's because he doesn't need her to do anything yet. He needs Westeros to get to the point where her arriving makes sense/works. He's had to invent a bunch of Essos plots just to spin the wheels over there while he gets all the armies in Westeros wiped out one by one. He's been pretty clear about how he got fucked over by not doing the planned timeskip because now he has to write all that shit to align the two story-paths.

            Anonymous

Exactly. That's why 2 books aren't enough. He's literally in the Robert Jordan situation where he thought it would be trilogy and ended up being 14 books. I could see it being finished in 8 or so, but in 6? No fucking way, probably not even at his best when ASOS released let alone now.

              Anonymous

Nah, I think two more books are enough because there isn't much more that could happen in Westeros after the next book where Aegon will take over King's Landing by the end, with heavy losses for the armies. That leaves Dany as the only one capable of standing against the Others in the final book and then her throwing a hissyfit when the commoners choose Aegon over her, killing off the last armies in her rage. Leaving a Dream of Spring because now the wheel is truly broken with all the nobles dead and all that's left are commoners who'll be able to survive and build a non-feudal society now that they won't be killed off by decade-long winters.

It'll be a really fucking thick book, of course. But I could see the last one end up quite slim because he'd finally have untangled his knot and so won't feel the need to invent more POVs and instead can just go with his original ending ideas and kill off most characters in The Long Night.

In the books it explicitly is, nobody is talking about democracy but their style of feudalism. The only way for a government to survive in Westeros is for the lords to hoard most of the harvest in their castle storerooms for the coming winter, then once winter comes they'll eat first and last and so by the end of the winter the lords and their retinue are still alive, hopefully, and so can continue the succession of government.

If for example they tried to do some North Korea shit then they'd all die because the control is too centralised, it would just be Kim's family and closest allies eating, leading to societal collapse when Kim dies from eating too much or their one castle running out of wood for their fires one particularly harsh winter.

What makes it bad is that he only had one book left.

Dune was essentially going to be two trilogies bridged by the fourth book, the God Emperor of Dune. The story does span thousands of years and follows the Atreides bloodline primarily. The first three books only span the time of a few decades or so. God Emperor is a huge time jump but it is a bridge to the second trilogy. This second trilogy only spanned a short time too.

Scytale, the last Bene Tleilaxu, I think, he had the DNA of the original Atriedes families like Paul, Jessica and Leto II(or III since Paul and Chani's first child, also named Leto, was killed offscreen in book 3 of the first novel). And although I was wrong about the Machines returning, because I had read summaries of what Brian Herbert was writing when he took over the Dune franchise, upon rereading Chapterhouse: Dune, it turns out another fan was correct. The Face Dancers who were sent out into the far reaches of space during that Scattering event did gain their own like sentience or independence and were locked in a war against the Honored Matres(a group of women formed out of the Fish Speakers, Bene Gesserit and Bene Tleilaxu women who were the axlotl tanks that carried the genetic mutations or products like gholas or face dancers within themselves.) So it's like a bunch of very fit/physically strong women pissed off at nerds/scientists for being used as reproductive vessels for the insane genetic experiments, like maybe that was what the war between the Honored Matre and the sentient Face Dancers was about.

Frank Herbert was probably going to bring back the characters from the first trilogy of the books and they were going to help the Bene Gesserit/Honored Matre in the fight against the Trans movement... oh wait, they were going up against the independent Face Dancers who are totally not trans/autogynophiles.

I'm not really a fan of the Dune series anymore because of the other fans, especially the Leftists who claim the Dune novels for themselves which is strange since Frank Herbert was a Republican who hated the LGBTQ+ movement. But whatever. I still have the books and when World War 3 breaks out and most of humanity, including the rich 1 percent and all the Leftists have been reduced to radioactive dust, maybe I'll be able to read the Dune novels again.

Guam. The 1980s version of the Dune novels was on constant replay on the Sci Fi channel which turned into the SyFy channel and they had their own miniseries adaptation of Dune, Dune: Messiah and Children of Dune. I noticed that the book store at the mall was carrying Frank Herbert's Dune novels, so I bought the first Dune novel and subsequently the rest of them. This was during middle and high school.

I agree with Frank Herbert in his hatred of the homosexuals and trans people, well I hate autogynophiles more than the actual trans people.

Anon the last two books he released was originally one book. His editor had to tell him to stop adding shit and release it in two halves. His problem isn't that he can't write, it's that to get to the ending he has planned he must get all the characters to a point where Westeros and Essos will finally meet. To get there he's had to invent shit that happens during the intervening years that was originally supposed to be a timeskip and he just can't help himself when it comes to adding new shit. New characters and plotlines that now have to be resolved before the finale comes, so he has to write even more and then ends up adding even more shit. All because he can't figure out how to make it all line up for the finale he wants.

The fat fuck might even have most of the final book written at this point because he's known the ending he wants for decades. But we'll still never see it released because he doesn't know how to make the story get to the finale in a concise way, he'll be stuck writing whole new chapters about a new characters and then deleting them.

If he truly had a problem with writing he wouldn't be releasing the books about the history of the world, or write for videogames. His problem is that whenever he's got trouble with a storyline he invents five new ones.

Which means he's thinking about being a dead man, which means he's died already and must continue living with that knowledge until he actually does, like a coward.

I remember late last year a bunch of delusional simps in got/HOTD threads were claiming he was gonna roll out Winds by 2024 based on previous claims about how far along he was. they insisted the numbers made sense and if he was 75% done a few years ago, he had to be pretty close now (by the end of 2022).
yet here we are almost a year later, and he’s still claiming muh 75% done, now sounding even more defensive than ever.

I used to give the old fatso a lot of understanding, but it's been so fucking long now and he's clearly abandoned the people who made him famous (his bookfans) so he can go play around with other projects and never finish the series.

Stephen King, who is famously bad at endings and is a total loon on social media, gets my respect for this reason: King's Dark Tower series had been an ongoing series for his entire career. His fans would eagerly await each new entry, but King got a bit complacent and lazy about writing them. Then one day King had a near death experience when he was hit by a drunk driver and he very nearly died. King decided "OK, I need to get to work and finish my magnum opus - my fans deserve it" and he finished off the last 2/3 books in a few years.

This is why King (despite his faults and flaws) is the King, and why Martin is a fat old hack who got butthurt that his audience was smarter than he figured and they had already figured out in his first book that Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. He is crying that nobody liked the planned ending of Bran being on the throne and rage quit.

Entitlement is one of the worst attributes a fan can have. Serious question, if you become massively rich and famous for your own OC would you give a fuck if your fans lost respect for you because you're taking your time on the next project?

There's a fanfiction called The North Remembers which does a decent job continuing and finishing the story. It's fanfiction so there's some sȯy and feminism here and there but overall it feels like a professional work.

I spent the last 5 years saying that at least TWOW he would likely finish it. Now I'm not even sure he wrote anything of significance at all. Time and time again he squirms and throw some bone claiming progress, but he burnt every chance at redemption with nothing to show for it. I bet most of this so called progress was rewriting that left him at the roughly the same number of pages since when Dance was published.

    >show completely muddied my memories of the books with changed character names, deleted/changed characters and plotlines
    >mfw even under the best of circumstances where the next books was released tomorrow I'd have to reread all of the old ones just to remember all the plotlines except for Jon and Dany's
    >mfw I'd then have to reread them all again a decade later when the final book miraculously comes out right before GRRM dies
I just don't think I can do it. I'd just check online to see if my theories came true.

    >scope creep: the author

someone should write a novelization of the hbo show and put some of the good stuff from the books that didn't make it into the show in there, and also stretch out the ending an extra season like the cast begged d&d and not make the second half of the show all homosexual quips

GRRM wanted this. Nearly everyone in the production just wanted it to end

      >"Releases" the winds of winter on his website when he dies
      >It's just hundreds of pictures and video of him fucking prostitute's over the years
      >"You really thought I was still writing that shit?"
      Would be based

After this and The Doors of Stone I'll never read another fantasy author again. I always considered the genre to be fucking nerd shit when I was at School and these fuckers have cemented my hatred for the genre.

Just read authors who have a track record of consistent releases for at least five years.
Don’t fall into the trap of seeing someone being productive for a few years and thinking it’s going to continue, because chances are that’s their publisher riding their ass in the hope of launching a new name, which sometimes works, but also can lead to a series being dropped halfway through when it fails to meet expectations, or worse leads to a Martin or Rothfuss situation.

I much prefer the urban fantasy genre tbh and read all of the Dresden files among others. Jim Butcher is pretty consistent.

Jim Butcher USED TO BE consistent. He molted and embraced his inner redditor and has been slacking off and writing really low quality trash for 10 years

            Sadly true.
Peace talks was a real slog to get through, I haven't read the most recent book because I wasn't aware he'd bring two out in the same year.
Storyline has gone off the rails a bit recently with so many loose ends.

He got Scott Lynched, but was able to pull through.
Hopefully he managed to get his shit together. The fact he called NuWars worse than the holiday special is somewhat reassuring.

Changes was the last truly good one I think. Ghost Story was okay but very disjointed. Cold Days was okay because it had such a good premise and backstory to work with, but if you consider it in isolation it was honestly pretty shit. Later books are just poorly written cringe fests. The worst thing is that they've soured me on the old books too - can't reread them without thinking about what the series actually became.

For real, why are you guys so eager to see this book series end? just because you read the books? are guys that invested in the sub-plots and characters? do you want to know who will sit on the iron throne?
It will probably end up being similar to the TV show ending just a bit more nuanced and where no one is a winner. Probably even insert the idea of voting or some bullshit. Probably even forgot about Bran's seer powers.

I just want to see what Quentyn will get up to while he masquerades as a sellsword in Essos, and find out the real ending for Patchface.

George confirmed that each characters ending will be the same as in the books. Jaime will die in Cerseis arms, Dany will go nuclear resulting in Jon killing her, Jon will end up with he wildlings, Bran will be king, tyrion will be the hand, Sansa will be Queen of the Norf, Arya will fuck off west. It's all just going to be told in a way that isn't rushed and slapped together.

The ending isn't the point, the journey is. For example Jon will end up with the wildlings, but only because he's a sentient corpse like Coldhands and must stay where winter is. Because Melly does not have the life force necessary to do a Thoros-style revival and so his only shot is to warg back into his own frozen corpse.

Also Cersei's prophecy will actually come to pass which will be fulfilling, instead of just ignoring it out of laziness.

Sansa will never go to the north ever again.

This is why I refuse to read series that don't have actual endings. I had to suffer through Dune, now I just read shit like Book of the New Sun or Black Company because I know it has a conclusive ending.

    Black Company show when?
