It would never happen now that he's owned by Nick.

However there was some really old Garfield merchandise where he drinks beer.

jim davis has got to be the laziest luckiest son of a b***h in comics there ever was.
he's literally a billionaire, it's just mind boggling how he continuously fell upward with so little talent and work ethic

Talent is one thing but he put a fair amount of effort into making Garfield a marketable character. I wouldn't say he had a lack of work ethic.

To be fair, he continually revised Garfield's design to make him more appealing. He created a character almost as widely known, and almost as beloved, as Mickey Mouse.

Is Jim Davis the first example of a creator making something mediocre but by sheer luck blew up and became a popular piece of media that he never really improved because of his work's popularity?

No. You need to understand the censorship of the 80s to understand Garfield's early appeal, his cynical attitude and shameless desire to be fat, lazy and mean made him a super edgy character compared to the dull Family Circus, Peanuts and Ziggys of the era.

Nowadays his comic is super tame, but back in the 80s he was a rebel and thus was able to make funnier jokes that related to people more than his safe, wholesome contemporaries. Early Garfield was genuinely funny, mostly, it only makes sense it would become a huge hit during the heyday of newspapers.

This is another thing a lot of people don't take into account. Standards for Newspaper Comics are way stricter than those for TV. Even now, what would be considered relatively edgy comics like Pearls Before Swine and Get Fuzzy would probably only get a TV-PG if converted to Television.

      >God dammit, where the hell is my pipe? Fricking chicken shit, frick it frick it shit, frickin' shit.

      >Hey Garfield, don't crap your pants if you see a mailman out there
      >Get lost Jon, you wouldn't recognize a goddamn mailman if one jumped up and bit you on the end of your fricking dick

      >I am authorized to extend the vet's congratulations on the success of losing five pounds
      >Yeah, whoop-de-fricking-doo. Just piss off and let me enjoy my motherfricking Italian food in peace, will ya?
      >It is my duty to remind you, you are forbidden the consumption of lasagna. The food results in increased blood cholesterol levels which will interferes with the progress of your diet.
      >You're really all heart, aren't ya, ya butthole?

      >What a fricking mess. A whole house out of control and all because some shit-for-brains canine showed up. What's that saying? "To make a mistake is human but to really frick things up you need a dog." Isn't that right, shithead?
      >Arf arf arf.
      >Hah! Well you're sure as hell right there, Odie. Between the two of us we can screw up the whole world. I'm just surprised it's taken this long.
