It's clear in ANH that Luke doesn't know him very well and they didn't have crazy adventures together.
But it's clear in ANH that Leia knows him to be a reliable and trustworthy ally.
So it's an obvious choice.
She knows he's reliable and trustworthy because her father told her so, that's why she mentions her father's opinion instead of saying >Yo dawg, whut's up Obi mah homie remember that time we went on a whacky space adventure and you saved me from a fortress of evil darksiders? I need you my brutha, time to ride or die once again!
And the good version of the "Kenobi between the trilogies" story already existed, it was Old Ben watching over Luke from a distance while going around as a crimefighting ronin on the side helping the helpless while concealing his Jedi nature, because as a *good man* who served the Force he couldn't just stand by as the denizens of Tatooine were exploited and do nothing, instead of spending his exile as a cowardly wagecuck who likes to watch kids through binoculars.

a movie script padded to 8 hours?
lots of dumb moments, forest chase, escape from the base with leias legs sticking out of obi wans coat, the hovering snowspeeder.
the dumb showdown where obi gets a bit burned, then vader lets him go despite hunting him to that point.
the finale when obi throws loads of rocks, like they were trying to blind the audience with motion so they wouldnt see how shallow and stupid it all was.

also Anakin snapping kids necks with the force, lucky for him killing his boss gets him straight into force heaven
Judging by original six movie i can confidently say that George didnt like Disney SW except for Rogue One, that had that element of Lucas'esque DNA.

That's it. He could have just been happy it would make it impossible to kill off important characters as they would need to appear later on. Highly doubt they mentioned anything close to what would actually happen in the story.
George loves it when children are involved in a weird fatherly way. He thinks that other kids will automatically identify as them and make the product more wholesome. He is wrong tho, kids hate seeing other kids in their kino.
