      >Most of the plot is about how nerd chick isn't "old enough" to be a Ghostbuster and how Paul Rudd isn't really her dad
      >McKenna is a ghost, and there's no real indication she's a lesbian with the nerd chick
      >McKenna ghost befriends nerd chick in order to use her to free big bad ice guy
      >Final battle is like 10 minutes, nerd chick uses a special proton pack and Kumar uses magic fire powers to hold ice guy, while the OG Busters turn the containment unit into a super ghost trap

That's kind of the big points.

The pitch was "Let's re-establish the Ghostbusters in world as not just a team but a serious business/franchise so that if this works we can make new movies without the original cast".

tbh the mckenna almost feels like the side plot. walter peck said she couldn't go bustin' cause she's underage so she has nothing to do, and in her loneliness befriends a ghost (the e-girl vampire from doctor sleep) who she can see because reasons. until it turns out the ghost is being manipulated by the big bad and she's using mckenna to release the big bad. then all the ghostbusters get frozen so mckenna has to save the day with the pajeet who has fire-bending powers (treated as a joke throughout the film until he actually uses them well at the end with the help of the now regretful e-girl ghost)

Honestly, the game was no better than any of the sequels after GB2. It was just references, reused music and repeated things from the movie (but it wasn't a game of the movie, it was set after)
Any originality it had wasnt even worth remembering. It's sad that these things happen. They buold whole universes that people enjoy and just repeat the same shit.

    The good
    >Movie felt like an episode of the old cartoon. Random world ending ghost and the team figuring it out
    >Movie was self contained and didn't overstay its welcome.
    >OG cast was more organically there rather than shoehorned in like Afterlife
    >Dan Arkanoid and Podcast were good for a few laughs
    >There's some effort to expand the GB universe with Winston's stuff
    >Bill Murray is used extremely sparingly so his brief moments are funny vs him being around too much and the actor being old and uninterested

    The Bad
    >Phoebe's plot in general is stupid. Either have her as a team member or don't. Ghostbusters never gave a shit about this before
    >Walter Peck is the mayor now? Fricking why?
    >Melody's plot is equally stupid. Should have never been seen again after the chess scene.
    >Trevor and Lucky's existence is pointless, which would have been fine if the movie didn't waste so much time with Phoebe's nonsense.
    >Nobody cares about GB family drama. That should have been left in Afterlife.

Overall, it's a solid 6/10. But I liked it for the most part. It's better than Afterlife but not by much.

      Anonymous

Mostly agree. I think it was more well made than Afterlife, but Afterlife had the benefit of having a real important story to tell (What happened to Egon and all that). So for me it's a toss up.

As much as I like closing the book on Egon's story, I hate how they did it. He was the most level headed and rational out of all of them, and the thought that he would say "There's something extremely dangerous in this mine!" and Ray of all people wouldn't listen was way too much of a stretch. Also him being an absentee dad was equally shitty.
Not saying the movie as a whole was bad, a lot of it just felt lazy.

          Anonymous

          >and Ray of all people wouldn't listen was way too much of a stretch.
This point I wholeheartedly agree on. Ray was the most into the occult and should have been the first person to jump at the opportunity to investigate what was going on. It would have made more sense for the conflict to be between Egon and Winston/Venkmen, who were only interested in being profitable. They needed a conflict and they just didn't put enough thought it into.

The whole thing feels like it was written to be Ray as the one who went crazy and went out to to do this, but since Harold died they decided to shoehorn him into the role.

            Anonymous

I liked this movie. I kinda get why the critics could hate it but I think most of their complaints are superficial and are more whining about products based in 80/90s in general.
My issue was the pacing. It was like watching a 80's cartoon but spread in two hours. The threads and development are there but they're thin. Like the movie expects already to know the characters. It really felt like a RGB episode made for the big screen.
Personally, I have seen movies with even worst pacing being acclaimed.
Overall 7/10 as a movie, barely. 8/10 as a GB fanboy.

            >It would have made more sense for the conflict to be between Egon and Winston/Venkmen, who were only interested in being profitable
Make it about Venkman vs Egon and Bill Murray never shows up.

They would have been better off making the entire Spengler family 1 dimensional and focusing more on the ghost-mystery side of things. Ghostbusters is always strongest when they create or explore some ancient evil thing and how they figure out a less than orthodox way to beat it.
I give FE credit that they didn't try to haphazardly reset Rudd and Coon's relationship like GB2 did with Dana/Venkman. But then it fumbled with the Phoebe sidestory, and made her borderline unlikeable.

my opinions are similar to what this anon said.
pretty decent and a fun watch but nowhere near the originals. I'm glad they didn't pull too many punches when they showed a few characters dying. though I wish someone part of the main cast would have died like the intern chick, because it would make the main villian seem even more threatening.
the whole firemaster family thing being an ancient ghostbuster-ish role was pretty cool and an interesting way of letting us see that there is more to ghosbusting than just tobin and the new york busters.
the phoebe bits were kinda cringe, but serviced the plot decently.

i'm kinda pissed that in both afterlife and this movie they still haven't fully canonized or uncanonized 'ghostbusters the video game'. It still is sitting in this weird spot where it could technically be canon if you jump through a few explanation hoops but is probably not canon as it stands, which is a bummer since it was basically the third mainline ghosbusters movie and Akroyd and Ramis supported it.
Now that the movie is out I'm interested to see how spirits unleashed is gonna tie the new movie into their game next update.

Yes. Which I would have never expected given it's set back in NY, has more scenes for the originals, a new villain, and much less member berries. It's just very poorly written, little action, no payoff, and every character introduced in Afterlife is handled worse here. You forget some characters are even in the movie. Grooberson and Podcast had great comedic moments in Afterlife which were lacking here. Phoebe becomes an angsty unlikable teen. Callie and Trevor have almost no presence, it feels like they disappear for the entire middle of the movie. Lucky is just... there. The Oklahoma waitress in Afterlife moves to NY and works in Winston's research lab? Sure, whatever.

The movie started off great with the Spengler family on a high speed bust after the opening scene set up the villain with a flashback to the early 1900s. This is proceeded by about 90 minutes with zero action. The Ghostbusters are called on some jobs during this time, but we don't follow them. Instead we follow Phoebe (who is benched after the opening bust for being underage) as she forms a not subtle in the slightest lesbian relationship with a ghost girl, which ultimately unleashes the movie's main villain.

The "frozen" in Frozen Empire doesn't happen until the third act. The villain shows up at the Ghostbusters door, where the original and new charactes have gathered donning brand new Proton Packs... which are completely ineffective against the villain. All the characters attempting to blast him are frozen by said villain. It's only Phoebe's self modded pack which can do anything against him, but she is ultimately frozen as well, and it takes a pajeet with fire powers to free everyone so Phoebe can blast him again while the OG's collectively pull a lever on the containment unit. The movie teased the notion of a small army of Ghostbusters doing battle with an army of ghosts unleashed from the containment unit, but ultimately all we got was them attempting to blast the main villain one time before being incapacitated. All the marketing showing the characters suited up ready to make a last stand at the firehouse didn't help. I've never felt more blueballed in my life, and I once had a woman suck my dick to near completion only to abruptly stop.

The pajeet? The character played by Kumail Ali Nanjiani. He actually had some good comedic moments, which the film was sorely lacking.

I feel like the pendulum has swung for me on Ghostbusters 2. I used to think it was an inferior sequel, but every new Ghostbusters movie they release makes it look better and better. The original film set the bar so high it could never be met, but I'm now of the mindset that Ghostbusters 2 is the best possible sequel which could have been made. You can nitpick small things about it you wish they did differently, but overall it's a damn good movie. Well paced, great performances, funny, unique villain. Shame it wasn't a bigger critical/box office success, because if it was I'm sure they could have kept the band together for one more in the early 90s before Bill had his falling out with Harold and Rick Moranis quit acting.

Ghostbusters 2 is definitely inferior to the first film but I think it is still a decent film over all, above average as far as films go but not one of the all time greats. Clearly the production and concept were troubled, but it still has some nice ideas. The haunted painting is a great idea and so is the train tunnel scene.

I wish they'd have moved away from New York. I haven't seen Afterlife, but I do appreciate that it didn't take place in New York.

If I got to make my own Ghostbusters movie I would do something a bit like Frozen Empire in that it seems to almost be an episode of the cartoon. I'd set a team of new, younger Ghostbusters, overseen by Winston, in a small town in the North-East, in New England perhaps. I'd use the Sandman as the villain.

He puts the people in the town to sleep one by one and their dreams and nightmares manifest in the real world while they are asleep.

Some scenes of note: giant ice cream covering several buildings after a portly man is put to sleep (reference to the cartoon episode that had Ray dream of giant pizza).

Their Ecto-vehicle comes alive with a giant mouth and teeth and tries to eat one of them who takes shelter inside a buildilng.
          >"I locked the car outside"

After Wintson is put to sleep the remaining characters cross railroad bridge and below the mis the river of slime from GB2. They then narrowly avoid the ghost train.

One of the remaining characters succumbs near the climax but dreams about busting the Sand Man and helps the last remaining Ghostbusters to save the day (lifted directly form the cartoon episode wherein Winston is the only one left but Janine dreams about being a Ghostbusters and helping him defeat the Sandman)

Even Dan just recently said in an interview if they do further sequels he kinda wants it to go global since every place has haunted places and ghosts, maybe something similar to the idea they had around when they did the game about franchising out the business with NY being the headquarters.

GB2 was never a bad movie. I watched on release and the biggest issue was that was released one week before the mega-hit that was Batman, so it was quickly forgotten. Sure, is not as good as first one, the biggest problem is they use the same structure again, but as a kid watching this after the boom of the cartoon, it was fricking awesome and as adult, you realize that the film was toned down from first one to reach kids, but still have some fricked scenes, like the heads on the tunnel the tub or the ghost taking new york montage

Because the movie made a point to be inclusive about act of the ghostbusting. I really dislike this proton gauntlet. No safety thought put into it. The point of the wand is for safety, it keeps the proton beam at a safe distance. You see sparks / embers coming off the tip in the OG when they're trapping Slimer. It'd burn your face off man. Hand would be gonezo.

Also wtf is up with Winston's Jurassic Park safety protocols. There was no back up or failsafe to stop ghosts getting out of containment.

It's called subtext. I know people on the spectrum have trouble reading it.

Most of 2016's sins is the 'soft reboot' bullshit. Ghostbusters, for better or worse, is a really iconic franchise for a lot of elder millenials who grew up watching the cartoon.
Had they just made the girls start a GB franchise in a different city (or borough even) and deal with their own locational problems, it wouldn't have been hated so much.

I wouldn't say "most" of the hate comes from being a reboot, but obviously that's a good reason to dislike it. Aside from that the writing is dreadful, the comedy is terrible, and the cast has no real cohesion.

I dont mean literally remaking the original with the same names, but I think Sudeikis would be good as the one with getting rich in mind, Wiig as the autistic one, Hader kind of looks like Aykroyd in my opinion an can do anything

The painting reverted back into Vigos portrait so the museum gave it to the GBs for safe keeping.

I thought it was good, but my biggest problem is that there is little busting actually going on in the film, you get one bust at the beginning, then drama and exposition happens, and then you get busting at the end.

I mean if ghosts and interdimensional gods exist than what other supernatural things exist is essentially what it's getting at.
I mean Garakka himself is hard to figure out quite what it is since they mention potential God, djinn, or demon.
It's kinda a play off the old cartoons where they start running into supernatural shit that's not ghosts and dealing with it.

No, i literally have no idea where in the first movie you saw that.
Podcast is doing his own thing with Ray, which actually works, and Phoebe is romancing a hot ghost.
The thing that they did change from the first movie was Stranger Thing kid having a relationship with the black chick from Madame Web, they might be cousins in this one, nothing there.

One thing I disliked is that this movie happens so fast that you have mostly to assume something about the characters.
In Lucky's case isn't that awful. In AL she said she was expecting to get out of Summerville and she jumped at the first opportunity.

I more or less think the same, also the movie suffers because it should be at least 2 hours and it should be used to do some character work instead of busting.

I'm amazed that considering America' society is the leading in LGBT degeneracy, most of its population is very prudish, even the supposed sex positive ones.

        Anonymous

For most people homosexuality is basically tied to an act of sex (and in some cases promiscuity) that is the key to it. Even sex positive people may not be unconsciously affirming of public displays of sexuality. So that gives an even more adverse reaction when you get kids involved

I get you are le trolling but it kinda makes me sad theres a posibility that you can't read pretty obvious subtext in a pg13 flick for children and 40yo manchildren.

        > Subtext
It's one thing to affirm something discreetly, it's another thing to be too afraid to do something and so subsequently not do it
