Yup. 215+ decibels will split your head open though it has to be at a close distance. According to U.S Navy Diving Manual, anything past 13 yards is considered "safe" for un-hooded divers. As in, it won't kill you but don't stick around too long or you'll suffer for it, and you should have a good operational reason to be diving. You can get even closer with proper ear protection, though again there's a time limit.
If that sub actually 'pinged', from this distance the pressure would liquify divers insides.
At 200db it liquefies the lungs
at 210db it would cause brain hemorrages
US submarine sonar is 235db.
In fact, engaging active sonar is a military shipboard defense tactic to deal with swimmer/diver attacks. If they can't be talked down or the security boats can't apprehend the person, the ATTWO (AntiTerrorism Tactical Watch Officer) can authorize active sonar as a lethal method of responding to a threat.
If anyone cares here's a long and fascinating paper on the subject.

>go scuba diving, sea enormous whale, it looks so majestic you stare in awe >whale gets annoyed at the little creature >releases PING that liquifies the diver's insides
active sonar is only used in specific situations, it gives away the subs locations. subs hunt by listening and being as quiet as possible. no sub goes around pinging everything
>Anti-America shitposters think America is the only country with submarines.
This is what negative obsession with a culture that is not your own does to a person.

I watched a French film a while ago where a submarine sonar operator had to use his skills to prevent a submarine from starting WWIII.
Don't remember the name but it was pretty comfy.
Just bought Cold Waters and am fricking loving living out my Red Storm Rising fantasies.
[...] >red storm rising kino

Truly the greatest WW3 story in my opinion. So much going on with so many different people, it'd make a great series if the right director could get the late 80's aesthetic down.
From what I heard, they decided to include a bunch of drama about female lesbian resistance members back on shore. Just rewatch the original mini series.

Damn, haven't heard that track in years. Good shit.
these videos are so fricking gay
the ONLY good one is this:
Black person please...
>open link
>le feels man
>close
Fricking nice.
There should be movies of ghost ships but they're submarines.
There's one about haunted submarine tho
I'd like an Event Horizon movie but it's a submarine instead
One. Ping. Only.
Wouldn't get *pinged* absolutely obliterate your innards?

So basically these things are cruising through the oceans, liquifying whales. Great, USA! USA!
Whale song can reach 180 decibels you stupid fricking moron, they'll be fine.
The decibel scale is logarithmic. 230db is literally 100,000x louder than 180db.
whales can make over 230db sounds
>go scuba diving, sea enormous whale, it looks so majestic you stare in awe
>whale gets annoyed at the little creature
>releases PING that liquifies the diver's insides
based moron
this, except for the based part
active sonar is only used in specific situations, it gives away the subs locations. subs hunt by listening and being as quiet as possible. no sub goes around pinging everything
Aww does your country not have subs?
>Anti-America shitposters think America is the only country with submarines.
This is what negative obsession with a culture that is not your own does to a person.
>what are earbuds
god youre moronic
Show me how you put those earbuds around your brain/lungs, bud.
People don’t understand that mechanical waves are mechanical.
>being afraid of sound
what a pussy lmfao
I'd use very big earbuds
Its not ping ping
Its a body shattering P I N G that would make Slaanesh proud
Every ping a Dolphin dies
Can't wait for Avatar 2. Guaranteed some awesome subs and giant deep water monsters
Can’t fricking wait.
uh, how would a submarine defend itself against a bunch of divers equipped with remote controlled explosives that they can stick to the surface?
see
explosives on a long enough stick then
A long stick such as a torpedo, perhaps.
a long enough stick would put you out of sight range of the sub so good luck with that
Just swing it around in the general direction of the sub, can't be that hard
The Hunt For Red October and Crimson Tide are the best submovies
Das Boot
Also Mel Gibson making fun of Sean Connery’s accent in what a woman wants.
The HolyTrinity of subkino
You guys should check out “The Black Sea.”
the jude law one? it's on youtube for now
Crimson Tide is just Denzel and Hackman yelling at each other for 2 hours
but it's a Tony Scott movie so it's pure kino

Don't remember the name but it was pretty comfy.
Le chant du loup (the cry of the wolf?)
Yeah that's it. The ending was fantastic.
Oh frick this looks great. Will watch.
A bit old but still one of the best in the entire sub genre.
this thread has my feet sweating
>*ping*
It's a travesty that we will never get a Red Storm Rising miniseries with the same quality as The Hunt for Red October.
Just bought Cold Waters and am fricking loving living out my Red Storm Rising fantasies.

this is what an actual active sonar "ping" sounds like btw
it's eerie and beautiful
i'm about to go to bed, i sure as fricking shit hope i get some kino submarine undersea horror nightmares
Not a sub movie but that scene in Men Of Honor comes closest probably.
how much does a used submarine cost bros?
ONE
PING
ONLY
Subnautica is pretty fun (it's a videogame)
Loved that game. It scratches the deep water, submarine, leviathan monsters itch so good. The sequel not as much
Pandorum is based movie in space but will satisfy you if you like submarine stuff. Based actors too.
There's also Hostile Waters and Ice Station Zebra if you like older movies
french kino
>a whole movie about the autistic sound guy
>ALARM
The Cruel Sea is from the perspective of a submarine hunting corvette, and it's pure kino (it's basically Das Boot - convoy escort edition)
Has anyone watched the Das Boot series? Is it worth getting into?
From what I heard, they decided to include a bunch of drama about female lesbian resistance members back on shore. Just rewatch the original mini series.
Damn, haven't heard that track in years. Good shit.
