Scooby has been boring for more than a decade by now; Velma was garbage, SCOOB! failed; when was the last good movie?
They had a golden opportunity with Courage, to finally have monsters, but they were cowardly.

Plus, Shaggy looks like a twink, I want that they have bara Fred, who will stretch Shaggy´s throat with his monster wiener.

It's cheep to hire japanese studios again since the yen has lost a lot of value due to the pandemic and japan's long term economic stagnation.
Used to 100 per dollar, now it's about 160 per dollar and seems to slowly and steadily be getting worse.
A fair bit of animation from the 90s and early 00s were also done in japan (BTAS/STAS, Teen Titans, the four 90s scooby doo movies, etc.) so this isn't unprecedented.
Also a one of japan's big studios just went bankrupt and a fair number of other ones are apparently struggling as well.
It's mostly western studios trying to take advantage the poor situation japanese studios are in as well as their popularity with modern audiences.

      >What happened.
What this board fails to acknowledge, anime won. Where as American animation failed to create cartoons for teenage to young adult audiences anime created a ton of quality content for those audiences. This, as well as the better art and animation of Japanese television shows, has lead to anime becoming extremely popular with western audiences. While western animation studios close (Bluesky) or fail to innovate in favor of "safe" investments (Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks), anime studios aren't afraid to try something different and as such have cultivated audiences.

Comics are struggling too, Demon Slayer outsold the entire American comic book industry. The money in animation and comics is now in Japan.

You are completely and 100% correct. I got in to animation as a kid because I loved 90's-00's era CN, it's what got me in to art in the first place. As time has gone on I moved more and more on to anime because new shows never matured with me growing up and on a technical level they stylistically got a lot worse and the actual animation declined where as I actually feel on average anime has become a lot better animated over the past decade or so. I'm a professional now, lots of other people are in the same boat as me. I don't know how exactly to fix it. I think maybe indie animation is the only way forward for the west because the professional scene has totally collapsed.

We are finally at the point where western "industry" is trying to co-opt anime because they recognize that it is more profitable. Western comics are in fricking shambles, western cartoons are actively fricking dying before our eyes, western cartoon networks are largely on the brink or increasingly creating more faux-anime or anime inspired products, anime and manga's popularity is through the fricking roof and absolutely global and still if you bring this shit up people will just call you a shill or whatever.

In case you're wondering why series seem to always push black people and/or white women (and occasionally Asians), it's because pandering to blacks and women net higher ESG scores for companies. And the only reason why blacks and women net higher ESG scores is because they're the biggest current spenders when it comes to people with disposable income, enough that they're often in debt.

It just doesn't work too effectively because most normie women and normie black people generally stay away from geeky/nerdy media since it's considered social suicide and they lack the emotional connection to identify with it. Not to say that geeky black guys and geeky women don't exist, they certainly do. And half the time, these black men are emasculated/non-threatening/homosexualy which black men hate. More black men love Goku or Vegeta or Venom than they do Superman or Miles Morales.

        Anonymous

The pandering to women is especially bad because for years they were pushing "60% or new comic readers are women." Not understanding a lot of them were just coming in from movies and didn't stick around and the ones that did liked how things were for the most part. Changing the whole land scape for them didn't working the way they hoped.

Sadly with both Black and Female characters it is going to be a long time before people trust creator's are not just trying to get some quick investment money. Indie games and comics right now seem to be the only ones people trust are making what they want to for characters.

        >It just doesn't work too effectively because most normie women and normie black people generally stay away from geeky/nerdy media since it's considered social suicide
You seem to forget that "nerd culture" is normalgay culture nowadays. Yeah, boomer blacks and boomer women in their 40s aren't going to be clued in, but video games as an industry dwarf Hollywood in the modern day, and nearly every adult from their 20s to their 30s has either a basic knowledge of what you consider nerd culture, or is actively engaged with it. It's not the 2000s anymore, young adults were raised in the nerd culture boom and are the entire reason that movies like Spiderverse thrive and make a shit ton of money.

The pandering to women is especially bad because for years they were pushing "60% or new comic readers are women." Not understanding a lot of them were just coming in from movies and didn't stick around and the ones that did liked how things were for the most part. Changing the whole land scape for them didn't working the way they hoped.

The real problem with comics is that they are inaccessible for many outside of trade paperbacks, which do sell. The industry bleeds countless dollars selling floppies to comic shops, which ARE something women avoid due to the clientele and image. It's not terribly uncommon to find a "nerd girl" with a trade paperback or two.

          Anonymous

Trades face the same problem as floppies though. It gets hard to find the early numbered ones. I used to get so mad with DC because they stopped numbering trades in hopes people would just buy random ones and not feel the intimidation of the legacy of characters. I think the real answer is to just cut out most the capeshit books and also be comfortable being niche again. If they could bring more varied stories in it would probably do more than a lot of the stupid retcons they have been doing. At least for the big two.

            Anonymous

Many, MANY comics fans will try to argue that comics are perfectly accessible and that inaccessibility is an excuse made up by people who don't care about comics or that people are just filtered by it but it's indisputably true that inaccessibility is what is killing the industry with the current market it's trying to cater to. Even after multiple full reboots, you'll get a story featuring some character like Psycho Pirate or some even more obscure character like fricking Snowflame and not only does it not explain shit, it frames the whole thing as a cheeky wink and nod to the audience in the know (people in the actual fandom) while just confusing people who are new to the stories and world.

The age old question of "if I want to read Batman comics, where do I start?" will be forever relevant because nobody can actually answer that. Different people will tell you to read Year One, or Long Halloween, or just to read Killing Joke. Some will say to read the most recent run, some will recommend avoiding it and reading a run from the 90s - and it doesn't matter either way because if you actually want the full story of Batman in that canon, you have to read like 3 other comic runs too that he shows up in. It's an actual nightmare to try to get into comics, and that wouldn't even be a problem if comics continued to cater to their smaller loyal fanbases who loved those worlds and characters - but the constant reboots and retcons to try to make them accessible but failing ruined even that because everything is different now.

I don't want to say that comics are fricked, but they have managed to alienate the audience that loves them while failing to actually commit to wooing a new fanbase because they're too stuck on their old material.

I don't find the aesthetics appealing, personally. Japanese "cool" just feels so corny to me, and their "cute" stuff makes me want to rip my ears off. Truth be told I think it's just because it's alien. Probably why many animegays are so fricking snotty and obnoxious, they feel special for liking le exotic animation.

That being said, there are some with legitimately good stories to tell, and those tend to be the ones people actually remember from the vast sea of shit like "My butthole got stretched open by Tyrone and became a portal to the second dimension! HUH?!"

            Proving my point, animegay.
You're downright delusional if you think art will just slowly be entirely japified and we'll all just make anime moeshit forever and cartoons are just an old, outdated form of artistic expression. People will get bored of it. In fact by claiming that's happened to cartoons, if you want to remain consistent you'd have to say it applies to anime as well. If everyone just did animeshit, we would get bored of it and the first big thing to break away from that would create it's downfall. Simple as.

I think the amount of blacks in Japan between hapas born from okinawan GIs and and nigerians working construction and nightclub security is way higher than anyone here is willing to accept because they've built this fantasy in their heads of based and grorious nippon where they'd be free from Black folk and have their own harem.

This doesn't all change the point. Japanese people can spend their whole lives without seeing a black person in the flesh, that's how rare they are, and Japan EXTREMELY insular, they've only now gotten used to the idea of foreigners mucking things up in their country, ones of a different skin type are a different breed entirely.

Nta but typically black people in manga were in the background occasionally to represent Americans/American soldiers
unless the author/artist had an interest in world history then you might get a joke/pun/reference to something else or someone's likeness as the inspiration for a character. Again though, it's not very common but to name a few series that have black characters
          >Smokey and Pocoloco from JJBA
          >Officer Black from DB
          >Afro Samurai
          >Akira
There's probably a few more but that's to the extent that I'm aware of, Highschool Be-bop has one but it's part of a joke about how dark Okinawans are and is also American. There's probably some newer stuff have some.

The manga had one towards the middle to end of it when the American military rolled in.

Then that doesn't really mean much. Nobody is saying Japanse people aren't aware black people exist, but there's a big difference from using them, and having them be part of the Japanese populace or have them represented as being part of it, which is more the point here.

How do you know the character is a native-born Japanese and not just a foreigner or tourist or transfer student like most black people in Japan are?

The movie is told though as if you are reading Nathan Algren's journal. It is so they can have his voice over explain Japanese culture and the way of the Samurai and not sound to weird. Fish out of water is one of the most common story telling tropes so the main character can be the audience's pov and have the world explained to them without it being to out of what a normal conversation between characters should be.

See, I saw it as a redemption arc for Tom Cruise to properly liberate the Japanese village because of what he did to the indians, which made him lose faith and quit the army
But for a story called the last samurai, I wanted to see more of the samurais do their thing more than what a white persons perspective is

                Anonymous

I think it was done for diversity but it could also be done in a non-terrible way. Yes, there are very few black people living in a Japan. However, most English speakers stick together in Japan. It isn't just the teachers that hang out but any one non-Japanese usually will look for groups to hang out with because it is hard to fit into normal Japanese society.

So if this guys is already Shaggy's friend or the meet in an environment that makes sense, it could work. More than likely it will just be one off episode and wont go into much about why he or Shaggy are there though, so the episode writing will have to be good for it to not just feel like pandering.

So like, the thing about Oda's nationally thing he did is that it doesn't really apply to One Piece the manga/anime.

Roronoa Zoro isn't a Japanese name, Sanj isn't French name, Nami isn't Swedish, etc.
None of them really abide by their imagined nationally.

It works fine for making acceptable Netflix casting,

Vincent Van Ghoul if nothing else has had multiple appearances since. Film Flam gets referenced from time to time and was in a movie grown up. Even Red Herring was in a movie as a cameo. The only characters they really memory hole are either gimmick characters with like two appearances like Scooby Dum, movie-only characters, or the entire cast of Get a Clue. I actually feel like Scooby-Doo is a lot better than a lot of franchises about at least giving lip service or cameos to old characters.

why do they keep making abomination after abomination? faux anime again? western companies and studios need to keep it real to their strengths and not adopt anything that is trendy from the east. do they not have any pride to their own identity?

I could dig it. I like unambiguously supernatural Scooby Doo stuff but:
    >Random black nerd stereotype nog
    >Pink haired anime chick
    >None of the rest of the core cast
    >Clean shaven (?) Shaggy
    >The yokai are just generic monsters with Japanese stereotypes slapped on top
    >THAT SAME FRICKING FAUX_ANIME STYLE ALL OF THESE GODDAMN THINGS HAVE JESUS FRICKING CHRIST
The extra dog could be cute and I like the little farm truck Mystery Machine but overall this looks annoying. Not Velma annoying but annoying and probably about as culturally respectful as that one direct to DVD movie with ninjas and a cursed katana.

You have no idea how Japan works.

Those are all outsourced to koreans, wtf are you talking about?

Not true, key animation is still mostly kept in Japan and if the budget is large enough everything is kept in Japan.

Fiction doesn't have to make sense, both Laura Haruna and Kana Iwata are both from European/Russian decent despite having Japanese sounding last names because it's cool.

Connie from Steven Universe did the same thing, black as coal but has a Indian sounding last name as if she was Indian she will sound like Manjula.

You haven’t seen many Indians, haven you? They can get extremely dark. And not having an Indian accent is perfectly normal if you weren’t born in India. My friend in high school had a Danish dad and a Hispanic mom, and he sounded southern as frick because that’s where he was raised.
