Gonna post some of my Godzilla reviews to start us off...

    Godzilla 2000 - Millennium (1999)

    Pros
    > Genuinely unique villain monster.
    > Solid grounded Godzilla vs military scenes. Good use of real tank footage.
    > Very good score.
    > Family was likable & the kid wasn't annoying.
    > Odd but comfy tone related to the mysteriousness of the alien.
    > Fantastic extended opening Godzilla attack.
    > While there was some issues with his size fluctuating, more than almost any other non CGI movie in the franchise, this film did a great Job of inserting Godzilla into the distance of real shots.
    > Great Godzilla suit & a very fresh redesign that notably contrast with the heisei suits while still feeling very G.
    > The American Cut's editing, pacing & sound is universally agreed to be better than the Japanese cut.

Not any full cons of note I can think of. Some nitpicks.
    > Orga's claws are overly clunky and don't open or function.
    > Godzilla'a restraint when being genuinely hurt by the missiles got kinda absurd, just blast them already.
    > Some of the American dialogue/dub/voices are hokey/silly but never harmfully so.

FUCK the mother fucking argogant cocksucker who refused to make the direct American sequel with the lava bat monster in Hawaii with Bruce Campbell, Spock & Christoper Lee all because he made Spider-Man bucks & Godzilla was now beneath him.

Saw this in theaters back in 2000. It was a major disappointment for me coming after the Heisei era.
The suit's concept is good but its execution is naff. Compared to the Heisei suits it looks very foamy and inorganic. The lack of an animatronic Godzilla head for close-ups is also a major drawback that plagued the Millennium era.
The story is okay but the UFO is far more interesting than Orga, who is basically a rehash of Biollante, right down to the tendrils and its goal of transforming into a clone of Godzilla. But Biollante had a far-better execution and origin story.
Overall G2K is an "okay" Godzilla movie for me. It has the heart but not the execution. At least it's not as incompetent as the follow-up or as shameless as Final Wars.

        Sorry man.

Eh I think the GMK suit head was better than any of those puppets.

Those animatronics could bring out so much emotion. After Heisei Toho sometimes had problems with adding characters to their creations. It made a return with Final Wars and I'm glad they're still using that suit for their short films and FW Goji is still given a lot of personality.

It's always going to be my favorite G movie. I was hyped when I found out it was coming out in Japan and even more when It got an American release. Best Godzilla suite too. Maybe not the best as far as G movies go, but its a fun stand alone flick that doesn't take its self too seriously. Even pays a little homage to the older alien movies. All while subtly trolling Emmerich

Oh right. Well the entire Millennium series is an unplanned bonus series we got because of Emmerich. And I like those movies individually (well aside from the first two) but the series itself lacked direction.

Godzilla vs The Smog Monster ()

    PROS
    > Film has a actual serious message for the first time since Gojira.
    > Tonally inconsistent but largely more serious & unnerving than the following 3 films.
    > Hedorah has among the most unique & cool origins & abilities of the series.
    > Scene of Hedorah first coming ashore is very surreal & moody.
    > A good amount of monster screentime.
    > The most brutal graphic human deaths of the franchise with the results of the acid mist.
    > Decent score.
    > Kid is actually decent.

    CONS
    > Godzilla flying.
    > Final battle drags on too long.
    > Weak to Poor Godzilla suit.

GNA is ok as far as Japanese artists are concerned but he's often boring. It's rare to get more than a simple badass full body portrait inspired by one of the films. But his colors are nice.

Also rewatching those Gamera movies. First time since forever and I feel like I want to be 100% honest about this sacred cow.
So far I must say I'm not a fan of scene transition and although Higuchi did better than Kawakita did with Heisei Godzilla that had higher budget...he didn't have to be such a dick about the man's work because it's not like effects in his movies are flawless all the time.

I remember probably liking 2 or maybe 3 the best even though Gamera is barely in 3 and he's so vicious in that one killing more people on "accident" than any malicious monster I can think of. But I liked his part in the story and the human cast.

The problem is that the big sequence the film is building up to, Gamera vs Iris, is a sluggish letdown that has no choreography and is interrupted every 5 seconds.
Godzilla vs Destroyah is a better movie solely because the monster fight that the movie builds up to actually fucking happens, has pacing, and wasn't just an afterthought.
I wanted to see Gamera and Iris absolutely go at it in a vicious, apocalyptic confrontation and kill thousands of people as collateral in order to hammer home the themes of the movie more, not just see Iris shove Gamera into a building while stabbing him repeatedly. It's like the Planet Eater "Fight" but worse because it's way more well-written and therefore the expectations are higher.

Kinda ironic to say this in a kaiju thread but you're literally too immature for the movie.

I like the action in those movies. Better practical effects than in Heisei Godzilla I also hate bringing up Heisei Godzilla and it only spotlights that Gamera will never get out of his shadow but Higuchi himself was a fick to Kawakita, doesn't mean Gamera doesn't have moments where the effects don't look great the three part structure also makes it a better told story. On the other hand in Godzilla's second series the music is better and the monsters have better stories and arcs and personalities. Gamera is not as engaging as Godzilla.

You mean copying a "Kids thinks giant hero bad because parents killed in collateral damage" plot from a 70s Ultraman episode that incidentally involved him fighting giant turtles?

                Anonymous

Well Gamera is not a very original or deep creation why would the 90s trilogy be any different? Its appeal is that it's simple and enjoyable enough with decent action. When it tried to make some environmental message in the first movie it was so half-assed I think they realized it in time and didn't bring it up for the rest of the movie. The trilogy also copied ideas from Rossio's script for the Jan de Bont movie that never got made. But I don't blame anyone

Imagine being this much of a brainlet failing to differentiate.
Even funnier when it's still the most engaging theme these movies managed to come up with, with nine out of ten themes in other genre entries others being generic background noise so men in rubber suits can roll around miniature sets.

It probably will. Kaneko likes the script and he's a Gamera man (yeah he did direct GMK but he simply doesn't understand Godzilla). I don't know if it's confirmed to be 3D. I'm guessing it will be more popular than either of the two attempts at Godzilla anime because it won't be as experimental and will actually care about the title monster (Godzilla as a destructive divine force of nature fucking sucks and is a dead end in the long run and no G'54 wasn't that). But judging from the way everything went back to normal after the initial explosion of happiness after such a long hiatus it won't beat the incoming live action Godzilla projects.

Gamera trilogy is better than Heisei Godzilla in some departments and in some Heisei Godzilla is better. It's not a clear cut black and white case. I'm not going to treat this as some kind of sacred cow.

    Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991)

    Pros!
    > IMO the single best G suit of the franchise.
    > Ghidorah & MKG look great.
    > The final Tokyo set is among the best of the series.
    > Battles are all very good.
    > Great score.
    > Shendo is among the best human characters of the series & gives possibly the biggest 2 emotional beats.
    > The fleshed out origin for G (pre-time travel) is solid.
    > The time travel plot is very inventive & unique for the franchise.
    > Film felt/looks sleek & modern.
    > Miki returns & we see how she has grown out of the youthful shy shell she had in vs Bio.
    > The UFO prop is well crafted & detailed.

    Cons!
    > The resultant effects (or lack thereof) of changing history are incoherent/unexplained.
    > I'm fine with the overall Japanese nationalist message but the campy caricature of the WW2 American army personal & their dialogue is hyper cringy/grating.
    > The Dorats look like cheap toys.
    > The time travel villains are just kinda off & weakly performed. The leader gets a few decent lines but that is it.
    > The ginger Terminator was semi cringe.

Godzilla vs Destroyah (1995) - SPOILERS!!!

    Pros!
    > Fantastic score.
    > G's death is extremely well done.
    > Burning G's suit is largely great (especially the head/neck)
    > Godzilla Jr's suit was fairly good.
    > I really like them bringing back a SuperX & Kuroki.
    > Final battle is largely good & brutal.
    > Destroyah's origin & connection to Gojira is solid mythos.
    > Miki being given more to do than in most of the 90s films.
    > Most of Destroyah's designs are flawed but good IMO. Head is great. His purely flying form is great & a scene of it dog fighting the SuperX3 would have been awesome.
    > I actually like the Aliens-homage/ripoff scene of the swat teams fighting the crab Destroyahs. The scale to life animatronics for them in these scenes are solid.

    Cons!
    > The secondary psychic chick was redundant and took time away from Miki.
    > The main young male character was also redundant & him fawning over Miki in his introductory scene was cringy.
    > The final Destroyah suit is too bulky for it's own good, arms too small.
    > The smallest props/puppets for the crab Destroyers are cheap looking, thankfully it's only glaring in the scene with the masers blasting them in the day (in the scene with them crawling all over G, the night time lighting hides it)

I don't think she'll appear ever again. Shame because this Godzilla deserves a cheerleader. Someone human representative who will take his side after Serizawa's death. Especially since Wingard will probably do everything to make people like Kong more again.
I'm not surprised Ice Cube's son is developing a sequel series ignoring GVK. They're serious about it too but no way it's happening.

This. I'm really worried the next one is going to be an even more unbalanced Kong wankfest and they had a perfect counterbalance to it with Madison. Although yeah, I don't think she'd want to come back to Godzilla. Apparently she's producing her own movies now with more teen girl appeal than Godzilla will ever have.

No, Ice Cube's son was in King of the Monsters. He's a Godzilla nut and together with a few guys, including someone from Toho Kingdom, developed a script and concept for a series that for some reason ignores GVK but it's just a fan project that they want to be developed by Legendary. It's almost certainly not happening though.

I literally just got done watching the original Godzilla for the first time, stop getting inside my head. Something very comfy about the scenes with Godzilla in it. Are the other films more centered around destruction rather than story?
I don’t know why but I’m craving cheesy monster movies.

The comfy side of that world is a fact but of course it's mostly under surface. It's there, we know the monsters are characters, they can have complex personalities and relationships but it's not the focus. They are still action films but I like the freedom to imagine what it might be like. Occassionally we get a glimpse of what the monsters are thinking like in the very famous and contested scene in Ghidorah - The Three-Headed Monster where we actuall learn the POV and opinions of Godzilla (and Rodan and Mothra too). Is it cheesy? Yeah but also very special and rare, made the series what it is today.

I definitely like Godzilla who has a life outside of what we see. In several series that are long enough he's got an arc. Usually starting as angry and bitter and finding purpose later on. It's the recent series that subverted it a little and instead of a single event shaping Godzilla's life it's more like his experience and longevity put a mark on him and it's a subversion done right.

Depends on the film. But most of the 60s/70s films aren't destruction focused. Godzilla becomes a good guy in them.

Then in the 80s the series reboots and goes back to being serious.

Oh this one. Before I watch it I always prepare myself mentally. Of course it's not misery porn, it has elements known in all of the movies but it definitely benefits from watching the previous movies from that series to see how Godzilla's character developed (accidently because the series was only prolonged due to delays with the TriStar movie) it's almost entirely cynical with a small ray of hope. Such a ballsy conclusion that most series wouldn't dare to have. It affected me greatly last time I watched it more than ever before even though it's a flawed film but I think I know why.

Ok so basically Kaneko gets Gamera more than Godzilla (even though I like GMK but he doesn't understand him simple as). Still not a fan of transitions just like I'm not a fan of people comparing this to Heisei Godzilla. Even when it's meant to be a compliment it's clear Gamera won't escape his shadow. For the record 90s Gamera looks better compared to its budget and has a tighter script and sometimes better human characters but Heisei Godzilla had better music and better arc/characterization for the main monster. So I think both had their strenghts.
Ok I'm not giving it a full review. It's clear this movie was heavily influenced by the discarded American Godzilla script by Terry Rossio and the monster remains a hero. It took Toho much longer to get that you can make Godzilla heroic and still make it updated for modern audience so it doesn't feel out of touch like it came straight from the 70s.
Anyway I remember the most badass scene of the trilogy appears in the second movie so can't wait to watch it tomorrow. It's a solid self-contained monster movie. No need to overhype it. Not sure about the score. 7.5 maybe 8. If we're judging it using the "monster movie" metric the definitely higher. No serious flaws, just some nitpicks about some artistic choices and maybe some composite shots (seriously why was Higuchi such a dick to Kawakita if his work wasn't flawless either?).

Heisei Gamera was making about half of what Heisei Godzilla was making at the box office maybe that's why there were only three movies or maybe that was the plan from the start but it gives the series a nice three act structure.

They were all released after the Godzilla series was done. They got better reviews but they weren't equally as popular at the box office. Remember after Godzilla vs. Biollante they went back to the drawing board.

I'm sure your numbers are sound but I swear I read a source about one of those 90s Gamera movies, outperforming the Godzilla movie at the time at the box office.
And it was a solid source with screencaps of the newspaper clips.

But it's been so long I don't even know where it was.

Just copied it from wiki. The only time two series coexisted was in the 60s and 70s. I'll check if we have the numbers for those movies. In general it's strange that Daiei/Kadokawa was so afraid to go head to head with Godzilla. Of course Gamera never had the same brand recognition but they waited too long to release Gamera the Brave. People were shocked that the 90s Gamera movies were actually quite good but completely ignored Gamera the Brave which I think is on that level except it took a different approach.

                >Gamera the Brave which I think is on that level
Ehh the kid centric story and themes aren't really on par with the trilogy which is why the movie is often left out.

I'd say it's the reason why it's not on the same level of the trilogy which has a broader appeal.
Which is why it made about a third of what Guardian and Legion made at the Japanese box office, and an eighth of what Iris made.

Maybe I'll rewatch The Brave after I'm done with the trilogy. So far I haven't changed my opinion about that I still think they're very solid examples of their genre and of course will be the blueprint for the new series whenever it arrives. I felt it might be the different tone that I felt might be the appeal of Gamera the Brave. It tried to updated the first series rather than actually copy Kaneko's success. And I liked how the kid's motivation was to prevent Gamera from committing suicide.

One thing that Gamera has over Godzilla is that Godzilla has zero villains with a long chameleon-like tongue and Gamera has two. It's such bullshit.

Oh don't get me wrong, Brave is a solid Kaiju flick.
I just don't think it's on the same level. And I think the reception underlines that.

But to be fair, the 90s trilogy may have been lightning in a bottle anyway. It remains to be seen if the franchise can connect to it quality wise.
Which is something Godzilla always managed to do. Whether you like (certain era) or not, at least they've been fairly consistent throughout the eras. Sure some are better or worse, but generally you get what you come for.

Which is why I hope Gamera 2023 will connect with the 90s trilogy quality or at least thematically, to establish something similar.

You're such a fucking fake holy shit. And I don't get the appeal of visiting threads about things you don't watch and fishing for reaction. I can imagine being this bored.

The environmental message is kind of...there. I didn't get it to be honest. When Gamera was first created it was like Godzilla sans depth. It doesn't offer alternative it's nice and familiar which is why most people love both. 90s Gamera gave it more meaning but I still think Gamera feels more at home with more personal stories like in Gamera the Brave.

    Godzilla vs Biollante (1989)

IMO the best of the series.

    PROS
    > Dr Shiragami is among the best human characters of the series.
    > Miki Saegusa is also & she is introduced here, although she isn't given as much depth as Shiragami.
    > Kuroki & sss9 are iconic & cool.
    > Really damn good effects. Biollante's final form is stunning in it's dripping slippery looking glory.
    > Great G suit especially in the face (suit is a prototype for the more sinister & muscular gvskg suit which IMO is the best suit of the series)
    > Goes back to the original Gojira & Hedorah & gives us a actual message with it's warnings against genetic engineering + bio weapons.
    > Biollante has one of the most in depth origins for any Godzilla foe.
    > Like 1985, really solid military stuff & quality city sets. And continues the largely dead serious tone.
    > Solid score.

    SUBJECTIVE PRO OR CON
    > IMO a solid & logical geopolitical spy subplot but I have seen some people mock it inexplicably.
    > The spiritual aspect of the film IMO is subtle enough to not conflict with the otherwise grounded rest of the film.
    > Miki attacking Godzilla with her psychic abilities I could see how it would seem outlandish to some people but I am fine with it.

    CONS
    > Biollante's stiffness & lack of arms limits the battles only slightly.
    > Final battle could have been just a bit longer.

    MISSED OPPORTUNITIES
    > I would have kept in the deleted stop motion clips, just slowed down Godzilla's movements so he didn't seem too agile compared to the suit.

This one will always stand out because it was the only Heisei movie we could get in the West for the longest time. I can still remember watching it as a young child and being blown away by the effects. I can't even remember if I watched it before or after the 1998 American one. Sadly, it doesn't match up to how I remember it, but it's still really good.

That movie is so fucking bad.
I almost fell asleep three times, and it's so full of nonsensical logic errors and hilariously bad characters and dialogue.
Then I went on to vs King Ghidorah and turned it off halfway through.

Never ever meme me into watching trash again you fuckers.

        >Then I went on to vs King Ghidorah and turned it off halfway through.
I actually watched that one with some friends the other week.
I've never felt so embarrassed in my entire life when the old soldier looked at Godzilla and nodded at it, with Godzilla seemingly shedding a tear as well, before blasting the building.
I could feel their glances at each other.
I really didn't remember that part, or that the movie was as bad as it was in general.

Honestly man there are very few bad ones (James Bond is the same way IMO)

Even the universally agreed to be worst film (ignoring the controversial anime trilogy) Godzilla's Revenge (mostly a clip show of footage from old films) works fine as a young kids movie.

It's a more realistic option. Of course it would be a different animation studio not Netflix. They don't even need to meet they're a bit too similar to each other. Of course I'd have them fight because it's expected but I'd turn them allies quickly. When they crossover neither should be the antagonist.

I've seen the first five old-school Godzillas.
    >Godzilla (1954) - Extremely solid.
    >Godzilla Raids Again (1955) - New Godzilla seems nerfed. I mean, an avalanche? Come on.
    >King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) - I watched the American cut. I imagine the original cut is better but I still enjoyed it a lot.
    >Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) - Really solid. Mothra is a great kaiju and the final fight with the larvae is fun.
    >Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster (1964) - It's fine, I guess. Mothra playing mediator is good, and Godzilla turning a new leaf is good too. I imagine things are going to get weird now that the dancing Godzilla movie is next.

The next film Monster Zero is firmly good. Vastly more coherent & focused than G3HM.

The dancing moment is a singular moment of dissonance with the rest of the film.

Then we get into a more difficult period as tv was becoming more important and the Japanese film industry was dying but I still enjoy some of the late 60 and 70s movies. But the quality dropped noticeably.

its style is not goofy at all. Godzilla flying is the only thing comparable to the those other movies which are borderline farces at times. vs Hedorah shows people being turned into skeletons by acid and kills off main characters. It's one of the most serious films in the Showa era

it's best to watch the Heisei era in order because they all share a continuity and reference each other often. Godzilla's arc is also very good and the emotional payoff in Destoroyah is one of the best moments in the entire series

Godzilla vs. Mothra and Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla can be skipped and the story still makes sense (they're also the weakest two movies in the Heisei series) but I wouldn't say they're meaningless. Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla adds a few precious and sadly rare scenes of Godzilla and his son and Godzilla vs. Mothra has moments of pure magic (thanks to Ifukube's godly score).

Yes, actually. Gamera is similar to Ultraman Nexus in that he canonically evolves over time with each battle. It's why he was able to
        >Do the flippers thing in 2
        >Unleash more plasma in 3
        >No-sell Hyper Gyaos's ray in 3.
Hell, this was shown in a manga where he starts off looking like G2, but around a couple of weeks later he looks much more like he did in G3.

        Anonymous

        >and no G'54 wasn't that
I'm already cringing at the possible wall of text incoming, but I'm baffled how someone can hold this opinion in 2022, when it's the most fundamental of knowledge that Godzilla as a destructive force of fate is literally the entire fundamental theme of 54.

          Anonymous

It's like a surface level reading of Gojira from those video essays on youtube. The original Godzilla was a creature that mutated. Whatever it symbolizes it's subtext. The text is that it's a creature that's horrifyingly hurt, alone, in pain and in want of revenge. That's not emotionless or random and there's nothing truly divine about him. Even though they intentionally his motivations and story ambiguous on purpose but it's there.
The first time that Godzilla is just thrown into the story was probably Godzilla 2000. Maybe because they rejected the idea of continuing the Heisei series and Godzilla is kind of one note. But whatever is his story we can assume he has one. Even though Millennium Godzilla is not the most well-defined as a character with the exception of FW maybe.
But the first time he became the true incarnation of "god of destruction" was in Shin Godzilla which I think worked for a stand alone. But in the anime trilogy and Singular Point they continued that and that's bullshit. Toho is thankfully doing something different with their current projects.

You told me to watch the 90s Gamera trilogy, when /misc/ had its last Gamera thread, so I did.

    And it was actually great.

Then I went back to "my" Godzilla Heisei movies for the first time in years, and uh... compared to the Gamera trilogy, they really don't hold up. Nostalgia is one hell of a drug, and Gamera has trampled that nostalgia with a fucking smirk on its face.

So my question is, what other kaiju kino has a Godzilla kid like me, that only watched Godzilla movies, missed?

The only other thing I watched was Shin Ultraman, which was also great. Already tried checking out the original show, but it's too much of a kids show for my tastes.

No I don't know because I just watched them and found them absolutely stellar.

Yea the Heisei Gamera trilogy might be the best kaiju movies ever period. And holds up much better than the relatively clunky Godzilla movies. The best of which barely even reach the quality of writing.
It's almost like these movies really profit from good characters with agencies, background stories as opposed to just go full "muh men in rubber suits wrestling with each other. also aliens."
They haven't ruined Godzilla for me, but I see where you and Gamera fans are coming from. Big G doesn't feel so big anymore after watching those and in fact feel a lot funnier than before.

        >Heisei Gamera trilogy might be the best kaiju movies ever
        >lol that's hyperbole
        >also I kinda agree
        ok schizo

        [...]
        >Gamera Heisei
        >Shin Ultraman
        you've watched them already.
I know its not the answer you hoped for, but there's nothing else of stand out quality. everything else is more of the same and going back in time, the movies will only get funnier from a modern pov.

the best thing to do is to hope for the future.

That's a shame then. I figured there must be more besides Gamera that I chose to ignore due to my - in hindsight immature - Godzilla fanboyism.
But I guess that's it then.

I still haven't given up completely on Ultraman though. I only made it three episodes in so far but its like, you can really see it was made for 7yos to yell at the screen with its humour and tension. It just might be too late for me as a 30 boomer. But I will try again.

        Lmfao are you me?
I remember that thread and out of boredom I chose to watch 'bargain bin Godzilla ' too.
        I was blown away.

        >Guardian of the universe
        was really good.
        >Legion
was fantastic. (You're not gonna beat Gamera sliding in a half circle around Legion shooting fireballs)
        >Iris
was fantastic too, with the little caveat of the final fight being literally only two punches. But it was so strong in terms of themes that it didn't even matter to me.
        Personally I'd go 2 > 3 > 1 tho, just out of personal preference.

Also, I don't really understand what the fortune tellers plot was supposed to be. The game artist just wanted to see the world end, ok. But the fortune teller seemed to be the bad guy, but then she wasn't anymore all of a sudden?
What I gathered is that she was (part of) a cult about the southern deity wanting to destroy the northern one(Gamera).

Then I undusted my Godzilla dvds and stopped watching after Biollante. Didn't hold up for me either anymore, and seemed so 'kiddy' in comparison all of a sudden. Funny because I used to watch GvB a million times as a kid and before this recent rewatch always regarded it as comfy kino

        I guess I'm a gamera fan now.

Which goes back to anon out your insecurity issues.

NTA bit I'm pretty certain Guardian overlapped with VS Space Godzilla at the JP theatres.

No, I like Gamera trilogy I also don't consider it untouchable by honest opinion and I say even if we compare them with just the Godzilla movies from that period there are some things that I like better in Godzilla movies than the Gamera trilogy and vice versa.

              >Guardian overlapped with VS Space Godzilla at the JP theatres
that was a year before when Toho also released Yamato Takeru which flopped. But I forgot that Gamera 3 had its release close to Godzilla 2000 in Japan only.

Gamera trilogy is better than Heisei Godzilla in some departments and in some Heisei Godzilla is better. It's not a clear cut black and white case. I'm not going to treat this as some kind of sacred cow.

lmao look I like them I'd argue that they're better than Heisei Godzilla in some maybe most ways (but not all) but this is just such an overreaction. They're just competent monster movies. I don't like some of the technical choices, some weird camera effects and scene transitions and whenever it tries to make a statement like for example about the enviornment it's not very good. It's ok to give something like 8/10 we don't have to go overboard just because something other than Godzilla released a well made monster movie.

I don't like "so bad it's good" which is why I only tolerate Gamera is small doses and I don't like some later Showa Godzilla movies like Godzilla vs. Megalon. But in every decade including the 60s and 70s there are some movies that are simply fantastic. Sorry if I summoned that retard by talking about something other than Godzilla. I'll quickly summarize by saying Gamera 2 is in some ways better than the first one though it slows down significantly in the second act which reminds me of Gamera vs. Barugon but that's a small thing. Marginally better, very solid.
Anyway if you're starting with Godzilla you can of course listen to recommendadions but I noticed there's no general rule about what you'll like more than others so perhaps going in the chronological order isn't the worst idea.

is there some fucking japanese national holiday or why are there so many GOJIRA threads in the last 24 hrs? Don't get me wrong, it triggered me to watch Shin Godzilla for the first time, which was politics kino and introducing my actual wife, but why this sudden GOJIRA obsession?

Well kind of. Do you consider Godzilla day a national holiday? Well it was on November 3rd and we've got a bunch of projects to look forward to. More than ever before. Between 2004 and 2014 we got nothing and now there's this so-called "kaiju renaissance" and new projects and new fans are everywhere. So it just happened. We've had a longer break since last year so now people want to talk about it more.

Thank you to the anon who pointed me at tokuzilla for watching Gamera in the Gamers thread.

Unfortunately the quality was too bad, and I realised they're also on YouTube.

Only dubbed (as far as I could see) but interestingly enough, I found it not just in English but also in German.
And the German dub had a lot more depth to it, depending on the location of the characters. Whereas the English one sounded very flat and "overdubbed".

Anyway, point is to thank you for making me watch the movies. Loved them.

You don't create the longest running movie series without doing some things right. But not everyone has to be a fan, it just has wide enough appeal like anything that's very popular. I don't know if it's something that's easy to explain. But for example I don't like Star Trek but I'm sure someone who's a fan would be able to state their own personal reasons why it resonates with them.

        >You don't create the longest running movie series without doing some things right
Appealing to kids to go "wow cool monster!" and merchandise is what they got right.
Same as Gundam but with "cool robots" instead.

What a lot of western fans forget is that this stuff is aimed at 10yo boys in Japan. Which is why I find gritty western remakes like Hollywood Godzilla or Pacific Rimjob so utterly terrible.
They lack the charm of the originals and are made by manchildren who don't want to admit they like children TV, so they feel the need to bring the stuff they like to the "adult plane", not realising they're discarding everything that makes them good in the process.

Most of them are no less childish than any of the other sci fi/fantasy movies. It's why it's sometimes known collectively as genre cinema. It has silly things with silly names. Most fans, pretty much all of them in fact, like these movies because they think are great. Engaging, interesting, exciting, they like the music or the fictional world it created. They're too varied in tone to be just about kid appeal and nothing more.
When the Japanese movie industry was dying due to tv that's when these movies started being targeted towards children for like the last decade of the first series but again it wasn't all the same. No one who knows these movies well would think that.

            >They're too varied in tone to be just about kid appeal and nothing more.

I'd be dishonest if I said that all of these movies are for children or are targeted towards children. It's maybe a fourth of all of them maybe less. What they are instead are elements that appeal to children. And that's practicaly anything that's cool enough to make toys out of them, dinosaurs, spaceships, robots, elves and dwarves. Anything made in the genre of science fiction or fantasy or monster movies that isn't for adults only although that didn't stop Robocop from being popular with kids.

I could go as far back as 1964 because that's when Tanaka decided to make it into a franchise and then the final movie would be 1975 Terror of Mechagodzilla.
But I don't know Toho also made non-Godzilla movies that belong to the same cycle and very often it was an opportunity to make a movie about a different sci fi concept. More horror-like Matango or The H-Man for example. And from the interviews it appears they just wanted to make entertaining movies and sometimes they wanted to include a particular sci fi concept they were interested in. No one ever claimed these movies were realistic but they're not dumb. In fact sometimes they might've been hurt by the concept itself. King Kong vs. Godzilla is a satire. Totally lost in the US version.

Some of them not being that good doesn't mean that those that are good are enjoyed ironically. If people thought it was terrible it would have a cult following not genuine fandom however we understand it because the term is several decades old.
Basically no one would care that much then. There wouldn't be genuine film historians who dedicated decades of their career by studying these movies and writing books (at least one of them is seriously one of the best if not the best movie-related book I've ever read).

I'm always giving them honest reviews and it's the same with other series that may make people feel the same way like Universal horror or Ray Harryhausen movies. To me there are some that are great in general sense, most that are great as genre movies and also some that have admirable qualities about them. And a few stinkers. But I'm not going to pretend I only like them ironically or that I feel like they're stupid because I might as well say the same about anything that isn't drama.

Not sure how that relates to me but it's alright really.
I have no problems or objections with other people's opinion on the movies. But apparently someone had a big problem with mine.

        >also love the Gravity Rush games. But if you'd ask me if they were good games, you will see sweat appear on my forehead.
        That's putting it pretty well.
I think in general people are way easier on admitting they love bad games, as they are with movies.

Because of the entire b-movie and ironically bad movie industry, doing so immediately makes people think of those two, and they don't want that. So they're more likely to argue about the qualities than just say ye it's bad but I love everything about it.

I started watching SSSS Gridman and really like it. The animation on the monsters is so cool, full of soul.
Btw, does anyone happen to have a video for the Hedorah 2021 video from last year's G-Fest?

literally educate me. I'm not even that tall. just 6"1. Do short ppl fantasize about getting eaten and is that related to the Godzilla mythos? Or is it trauma-healing mythos based on nuclear bomb story? (btw it wasn't nuclear bomb, napalm did most of the damage)

              >Do short ppl fantasize about getting eaten
              Certain small ppl yes.
              >is that related to the Godzilla mythos?
Not really. More so a American thing that started with Kong back in the 80s and then Legendary adapted that man eatting monster thing.
              >Is it trauma-healing mythos based on nuclear bomb story?
              Highly doubt
              >(btw it wasn't nuclear bomb, napalm did most of the damage)
for the islands yes, but main land was the nukes. Napalm was also a more so Vietnam thing than a Japanese one.

Gojira was from the 50s yes, but never actually ate people in that movie and was only speculated by that schizo old man in that movie. Only thing he ate that a deleted shot was a cow(for the fact even for 50s standards looked fake). Kong on the otherhand ate people since the 30s

They removed it because the scale was off and also because the monster motivations were best kept ambiguous. Of course we know it was essentially revenge. Kayama's original story included the monster feeding on cattle but I'm glad they removed that and Kayama loved it so much he even cried because of what humans did to the monster.

Godzilla is like a building. First he started off small, but in time was made bigger because achievement reasons. Is why people always want to claim title of biggest building on earth, but have to fear about record being broken.

I don't know if you're replying to anything specific because no one talked about any masterpieces of cinema, which the original movie is btw, but I was the one talking a few minutes ago about what Godzilla fans think about the series. So I don't know if you're a non-fan or a casual fan or even a lifelong but the point that at least I was trying to make was that movies are so varied in tone and quality it's dishonest to assume that fans like it because they think it's crap. They like it because they think it's good. Generally speaking because there are better or worse films but for example I think Jason and the Argonauts is a wonderful classic of adventure cinema and I feel the same about 1964 Mothra vs. Godzilla. I don't enjoy them ironically.

tbh some fans might be embarassed about liking what they like but maybe it depends where they're from? idk I'm not counting the guy who was here earlier and actually started this shit even though he hated the movies.

I forgot to ask him if he thinks the original King Kong is also crap. Or any other Kong including the Jackson version.

Jackson version the worst kong of all since it was nothing more but a giant cgi gorilla. Kong was never supposed to be based on any existing ape, but a fictional ape monster.

You were baited so hard in this thread motherfuckers. And by people who don't give a shit about these movies. You pathetic gays kept replying to random people thinking they're the same person you retarded assholes. You were played so hard you imagined some "autist" you gullible idiots. Everything was normal then someone decided to stir shit by pretending to be a spergy famboy of some other movies then the "I like the movies because they're crap"? Why you think it happened so suddenly you mongoloids? It was just about recommendations then some people tried to make it into a normal quasi-Goji general thread then the thread went to shit the next day after Euro posting hours.
