Frank is killed, and the soldiers take in Jim, Selena and Hannah. We're right around 31-32 days after the initial outbreak.
Major West tells Jim "8 days ago I found Jones with a gun in his mouth. He said he was going to kill himself because there is no future." This of course is when it is revealed the soldiers' broadcast is all about luring women.
So here's what I realized:
Let's say there's 32 days since the initial infection at this point. Obviously the infection did not take out England in one whole day since there had to be enough time for people to put up the pictures/letters in the public square and for newspapers to announce an evacuation. So, even if that all occurred within one day (and it's far more feasible that it occurred over a couple), that still leaves about 3 weeks between the infection actually doing major damage to England and Jones' attempt at suicide.
This means only three weeks passed before the soldiers turned rapist. It took about 20 days (give or take) for them broadcast a lure for women.
It’s really only bad to go without sex if you’ve been having sex consistently for awhile and are used to it. If you’ve always been sage 28 days is literally nothing. But also they could have naked pictures of girlfriends or exs and I think that would give some make shift relief

This is yet another reason why I simply ignore the sequel's existence beyond the 10 minute intro scene (which is kino).
In the first film, the whole way that the army commander and soldiers do genuinely believe that the rest of the world is fricked. We can happily debate the (im)morality of their actions, but at the very least we know that everything they did was done with the full belief that the rest of the world was fricked. This was done by their being zero info about the rest of the world in the movie until the very end, which allows the viewer to imagine that the infection has easily spread to other countries and that the rest of the world is probably severely fricked. The sequel totally retcons this by showing that the rest of the world never had any outbreaks, it was just britain, and therefore like you say it suddenly makes no sense that the commander didn't know this, and this retroactively totally changes his character from "fallible human who becomes evil due to horrific outside circumstances" to "man who deliberately misleads his men into believing they're fricked when actually they're a couple months away from rescue and just wants to rape for the fun of it". Any anon can see how the former is an interesting theme to analyse whilst the latter is just gratuitous evil for the sake of having a villain. One out of a thousand reasons why the sequel is a yankee abomination.
