No, but it's worth watching for Max and Goofy.
It's worth watching for all 4 of the main characters (Goofy/Max/Pete/PJ). But it depends how much you can handle. The films (both of them) are definitely more digestible and hold up better as a stand-alone. If you're watching for the girls, you will probably be dissatisfied because they aren't in it all that much.
Peg is a cat. Following Disney logic, if PJ looks like Pete, Max looks like Goofy, then Pistol looks like Peg. Peg should have same big ears as Pistol, but since Peg's are always hidden, they're not in the design documents, so when one episode required a close-up of Peg's ear they gave her generic dog ears.
But Peg is definitely a cat. Disney doesn't usually make interspecies couples. And theres the joke where Goofy has a pet cat and Pete has a pet dog.
