Frick you, homosexual - I know it's not all crap, but I can count on two hands the indie movies from the last decade that weren't boring as frick or lost so far up their own butthole you needed a lantern and spelunking gear to find your way back out. Hell, 2013 is the last year I can remember where there was a lot of good independent features and docs released - you had Nebraska, Jodorosky's Dune, Blue Ruin, Pandora's Promise, Under the Skin, Tim's Vermeer, Blackfish, etc. It's been all downhill since then and the indie film releases have gotten more and more unimpressive over the last decade. I'm struggling to think of anything from the last four or five years that's really impressed me and all I'm coming up with is Vast of Night (which was pretty solid) and I'm Thinking of Ending Things (which the jury's still out on, it frustrated the frick out of me and I can't decide if it's pretentious horseshit or kind of brilliant in its own way).

Getting pissed off that they haven't reviewed Gay Cowboy Movie #43 or Smug Millennial Urban Romance Movie #207 is fricking stupid.

What's really confusing people is the inconsistency in their opinions. The Kenobi show exemplifies a lot of what was also wrong with the prequels, except for everything being fricking green screened, but they like it because it's not quite as shitty as the other SW stuff has been since Disney took over. This comtradicts what they said about how the sequels being shit doesn't mean the prequels are somehow better now than they were before, which is valid logic. I don't think they're paid or anything, but it is weird. Even Jay was visibly puzzled by their logic and their semi positive review.

Their unrestrained hatred for the prequels has as much to do with their age at the time of release as much as anything else. Mike was really into film in his 20s and Star Wars meant a lot to him. If the prequels were released today Mike would probably just apathetically laugh at them the way he does over stuff. They’re middle aged now.

I mean, it takes such minimal effort to exercise for half an hour 3 times a day. An what's worse is that this seems to be an ubiquitous "style" for anyone who's into shit like Star Wars/Trek or capeshit. Like WHY?

OP, I understand you totally. I've been watching RLM casually for probably eight years, and I would always click on their new stuff, just to see what was going on, and as a way to find out about movies that I had no interest in watching myself, but lately, I've come to see them as part of the problem of what I find so off-putting about so much of what's going on with Western Civilization.

They don't create anything, and the things they do create are truly awful. They are parasitic destroyers. The fact that Mike made the argument for JJ to direct the sequels and then that happened, and then the sequels revealed just how bad Hollywood had gotten, and they never made any real attempt to understand their own role in it, is supremely telling.

Having now spent some time really trying my best to understand the prequels (I never hated them; I mostly didn't care) and to see just how truly good they are, I can more clearly see the direct connection between RLM and our decaying society. They are, in some ways, precisely everything that it wrong with our culture. I'm ashamed that it took me a decade to realize just how destructive they are. But I'm slowly, day by day, trying to make myself a better person. There are still beautiful and wonderful people in the world. There is still edifying art to be made. There are important things to be said, and finding a way to share these things, through art, through cinema, is now more important than ever. The fact that these guys are so stunted that they either cannot see their own role in creating the things they hate is a tragedy. When I watch them now, it's because there is a certain kind of art in their trajectory, which is a kind of flat-line last-man descent into alcoholism and oblivion. I don't hate them so much as pity them. I am happy that I am not on their self-loathing, irony-fueled treadmill, and I still hope that some day they can snap out of it and begin the upward climb. Truly.

my most sincere hope is they'll get the cinemasins treatment and some normie will make a video exposing how cringey, juvenile and midwit their idea of criticism actually is. they're basically the nostalgia critic, just less autistic. they're only capable of interpreting media by comparing it to the shit they watched when they were children - ghostbusters, star wars, tng. that mindset is incapable of understanding art on its own terms, so corporate committee manufactured abominations like disneywars will pass the smell test so long as they follow a familiar structure and use about as much cgi as something from the 90s

          That's not a validate critique

I would have loved it if in the Avengers movies, Black Widow and Scarlet Witch had a lesbian sex scene
Is it a valid critique for me to say a flaw of the movie is that it didn't have something I would have liked?
A valid critique would be something like a plot hole, dialogue issues, unintended character/story inconsistency, or contradictory in-universe logic.

Even when they try to do critiques it shows they weren't paying attention
          >Droids are so weak why are they even in the series? That's bad writing

They’ve never been very insightful but I feel even the “hang-out” quality of their vids is beginning to wane. That Obi Wan vídeo was just incoherent rambling between Mike and Rich, with Jay not having the heart to share his full opinion.

      Anonymous

I thought Jay held his ground pretty well. He just doesn't have that much of a dog in the fight. I did notice Mike and Rich let it slide that the original trilogy implies Leia and Obi Wan had never met, but now they had this adventure that they apparently never spoke of again. But in another video, maybe it was the Solo review, they took issue with similar inconsistency.

Looks like Culkin was unironically just using them to try and set up his own YouTube channel. Now it’s failed and he wants nothing to do with them. Sad.

Yeah, I stopped watching them a few years back. I noticed they were being hypocrites a lot.
    >one episode
    >"Oh no, thats really mean to make fun of old people."
    >later episode
    >"Haha wouldn't it be funny if that old man fell over and couldn't get up?"
Stuff like that. Kind of annoyed me. Also they seemed like they were being contrarians on purpose at times.

What. Are you autistic? They always made fun of old people.
      Also, only Mike is contrarian.

There was an episode where they were condemning some movie they didn't like for doing it. I don't remember which one it was, but they did it a few times (not just old people, doing other stuff). It was annoying for them to act holier than thou while also laughing and making those same jokes an episode later.

I was very disappointed with their Obi Wan review video. These are the guys who made it big on their Plinkett reviews that critiqued Star Wars as hard as it could. Then they review Kenobi and they don't say much of it other than it's okay? It's not even okay IMO. It's fricking trash.

They have enough money to make really low budget films and get out of the hell they are in.
But they are also self aware enough that they are not remotely good filmmakers.... and only have the ability to critique

I think it's a natural process that happens with all non-reciprocal relationships. People - and groups like theirs - naturally change over time. In this parasocial relationship, you and them change and develop independently of each other. So naturally, they will eventually change in a way you don't appreciate. You feel sad and maybe even betrayed by how they changed (or didn't) and grow to dislike them. I think this applies to whatever weird thing we have here on Cinemaphile, where the seething mass of faceless posters develops almost on its own and each individual anon is just kind of there, confronted by this amorphous blob. The only relationships that can survive long-term are reciprocal ones.

I enjoy their talks about Star Trek, but their opinions on other things are dubious. I decided to watch Severance recently based on Mike's glowing endorsement and it wasn't even that good.
Interactions between Mike and Rich are still good, and I enjoy the two Canadians who are never around anymore. Jay is like a lead weight and his homosexuality has corrupted the gang.

Jay is a hipster contrarian. He hates anything that's popular in modern times while propping up old nostalgia pieces and shitty arthouse movies. You can tell everything he's going to say about a movie before he even opens his mouth.

Rich is just reddit in human form. If there's quips and action scenes he's going to enjoy it. I don't think he's ever made an insightful comment, he's the worst of the lot.

Mike is the wild card. He seems to like most movies and enjoys the big blockbusters that Jay despises. But he'll also nitpick and ramble for hours if that movie happened to be from a franchise he cares about the lore of.

This made me devalue their opinions. None of them ever line up with me and none of their recommendations would ever make me want to go see something. Since they've got big they've become increasingly indulgent too. We don't need best of the worst episodes that run as long as an entire movie. I hardly ever watch them anymore.

i like RLM, but i don't think any of them actually have good "taste" at all.
Jay seems to exclusively like indie horror films (in an ironic way?) and mike likes mainstream sci-fi stuff.
have any of them ever watched a film made before 1970? I think Mike referenced Citizen Kane in one of his Plinkett reviews, but it's as if, to them, the era of "classic" films is the late 80s.
in a way, once you accept this, you realise they're essentially just bugmen but with a bit more self-awareness, and it becomes easier to palate their videos.

are people unironcally mad they made a video with opinions Cinemaphile doesn't agree with?

      Anonymous

I can see why people are annoyed by their Obi Wan video. They were weirdly apologetic for a really shit series without offering any reason why it was decent, other than “it’s better than Picard.” Mike and RLM made their name on dissecting a prequel Star Wars trilogy. And here we have another series that’s pre-original trilogy and it’s awful. But they don’t really care.
