Green Lantern

What caused the decline in Green Lantern fans? It used to be one of DC's most popular comics and was able to carry 3 or 4 ongoing titles. Now it can barely carry a single Hal Jordan solo comic.

The fans are always there, it's DC's fault for not wanting to take care of the comics following the movie bomb.

The movie, and the new 52 reboot. Yes, GL lore went by mostly unscathed, but by Brightest day GL had become a DC universe wide franchise and New 52meant that all needed to be tossed by the wayside.

I know that, but all the plot points Brightest day was setting up were swept away. GL went from running through the DCU, to quietly wrapping things up in it's own corner.

True John's run peaked at Blackest Night but the Krona takes over Oa storyline that followed was fun.

      >every new villain is an oc donut steel seemingly stronger and more of a threat than the last to the entire universe

Krona is such a shit character. I used to like him but the more I think about it, he just doesn't make any sense. He comes back every 10 years strong as fuck for no reason and then goes down easy. When it's all said and done, no one even remembers him until the next omega crossover.

Movie was bad, and the lesson DC learned from it was that everyone just plain hates Green Lantern and refuse to allow him to appear in any more media after that. So the DCEU movies and CW shows avoid even a mention of lantern anything.

Every writer after Johns wanted to keep on doing the same shit so we got the GLC in a war with some other lantern corps, or something a lot like a lantern corps with the Third Army, those anti emotion guys, Krona's army, Relic's Army. All the same shit over and over again. And they recycled the same old Guardians are actually evil and doing evil shit, Hal has to stop the guardians and the power battery explodes stuff again.

Morrison wanted to not use any other lantern shit at all and made some weird surreal, hard to read nonsense involving a new guest appearance of someone who has not been seen since the 60s over and over again. It was a mess.

Thorne blew up the central battery again, depowered the lanterns again, killed off half of them, sidelined most of the main cast and made a John story that was boring.

      >And they recycled the same old Guardians are actually evil and doing evil shit, Hal has to stop the guardians and the power battery explodes stuff again.

This is something that annoys me. Every other writer wants to raise stakes by killing the guardians or making them pseudo-evil, and destroying Oa or the CPB. Or they kill off half the lanterns and turn the whole thing into a survival situation where Hal rallies the remaining few t go stop the bad guy. It has been done to death. Every single writer on a GL book wants to tear things down, break things, remove stuff and kill off characters.

Johns was the only writer that built things up. He added all the lanterns, built up Oa, added chapter houses, added different divisions of the corps, added way more lore to the concept, added more characters, added more corps, made everything into this huge universe that was interesting to read about. While anyone else just removes and kills.

It was WB that gave up on GL (despite being 100% responsible for it flopping), but DC knew that GL was their best comic outside of Batman given the run given the numbers Geoff was pulling. Like that other anon said, the subsequent writers they hired kept trying to up the ante by cutting down and depowering the GLC despite that type of story being retread so many times people got sick and left. On the rare occasion some writer will tell that story in a good way like pic.

DCEU only had one in the background of a massive war scene, that was cut from the final film. I don't think that counts.

And in Flash we saw a normal guy holding a box that had green light in his face for about a minute....

...that's your example of GL appearing in CW and DCEU. Combined to almost one full minute if you include a scrapped scene. So no..GL did in fact not appear in either of those you are full of shit.

Human beings are cheap to film. Aliens are not. You'll get 1 scene of Kilowog because he costs millions to render if you want people to not make fun of it. Alien "environments" end up just being green screen volume shit. What you are describing is basically Ant-Man 3 with GOTG pink people aliens.

Even the animated series had to reuse assets. Green Lantern works best as a comic honestly. Imagine how one of those 2 page spreads from Sinestro Corps War would look if it was people floating with wires or CGI blobs in a weightless environment shooting green missles at each other. Out of universe, the answer is that the Legion wasn't made with the larger DC universe mythos in mind. The writers were (understandably) more concerned with telling stories than the implications those stories may have for the setting's canon timeline.

In-universe, the answer changes with each reboot. Pre-crisis, the GLC was around, but the Earth didn't allow them to come near after a corpsman was caught doing some supervillain shit by the Legion in their very early days.

The poorly received movie did not move toys.
This killed the warmly received cartoon which could have moved some toys.
The movie's flop soured GL in the eyes of executives as something that does not print money.

Comics wise, I've been told that writers after the one that introduced all the alternate lanterns kept trying to one-up that writer, which lead to retardation and cause fans to kinda drop off. But I wasn't reading the comics so I don't know with certainty.

I was trying to think of games where you can play as a Green Lantern and remember DCUO

honestly, I think the lack of a good cartoon and tv adaptation crippled Green Lantern long term. Batman was majorly boosted by the animated series among young fans in the 1990s which had synergy with the comics and movies. Superman benefited from his animated series to a lesser extent (Superman Returns is kind of a mixed bag too) but then you had stuff like Smallville which eventually lead to things like CW's takes on Green Arrow and The Flash which kept all of those characters culturally relevant. Apart from the botched 2010 movie the only major Green Lantern content outside comics was animated Justice League and while I actually like John Stewart they might have been better off going with Hal just to have more material to potentially adapt or reference.

If there was a cartoon out at the same time as Blackest Night and Sinestro Corps War, then GL would have had the same status as BTAS. That's how manga gets boasted by anime; if you coincide both, then people are more likely to buy the mangas to get more of the story.

I could see this. I also feel like Guardians of the Galaxy showed a taste for cosmic weirdness as yet under exploited by cape films which it just seems like GL would be the perfect avenue for DC to explore. I could see a procedural Green Lantern Corps a la Star Trek, something about Hal a la My Adventures With Superman, maybe even something with Guy Gardner being a bit of a fuck up? Also, the fact DC have had a recognizable black hero in John Stewart and have gone all in on shoving Cyborg into everything astounds me.

Until the mid 00s it was a problem because they had to plan out, ink, paint etc cells for whatever wacky green thing Hal makes. It was easier just animating Superman flying and Flash running instead.

The Timm JLA series has no excuse, they were just really fucking lazy and only ever had John shoot green lasers. After that Green Lantern was toxic and no one is allowed to stick him in their shows because WB thinks the general public at large purely hates the whole concept enough to tank whatever media he appears in.

What I'm saying is that most of the team aren't that creative when it comes to combat. The one time it requires creativity they get lazy.

They couldn't make John generate a crazy anime sword? A cool jet? A car? I'm not even talking about cool shit like a dinosaur or a lion. They even joke about it by saying John was always a boring guy.

                John is boring
And no they can’t. Go back and watch clips of the show. The animation looks pretty bad and stiff. Understandable they choose to preserve the budget for things that actually mattered rather than waste it on one character.

They show stayed consistently cheap tho. I think it might have been cheaper than the good seasons of BTAS.

Beginning of the end was either the GL show getting canned at a cliffhanger, or that GL movie that was so awful that other media companies avoided the word "green" to dodge any chances of getting affected by its failure by proxy.
Can't comment on the comics though, I don't read comics.

Why are Lantern cucks so salty over Batman?

It's weird that fans of any DC character other than Batman resent him. Whether you like Batman or not he single-handedly keeps DC in business. Literally every other book exists entirely due to Bat-welfare.

Batman editorial don’t like GL and Batman’s biggest fanboys like Snyder bring down the quality of the industry.

I wasn't talking about quality, I was talking about money. Bat-books are the only books bringing in the money, DC exists solely because of them. Every other book is a charity case.

It’s this type of victim mindset that makes you just as retarded as Batfags who keep buying that braindead garbage of stories. This is why I stopped being a fan of DC, all the fans are fucking depressed yet they keep coming back like abused puppies. Like being a Batfag is any better, he was boring as fuck in The Batman and was turned into Superman’s bitch boy in Justice League.
Why do you care so much about comics when they have been bad for decades already? Batman comics suck ass, all of them, and if GL gets one it won’t be any different. Stop waisting time reading capeshit and enjoy something worth your attention. With DC there is only two choices either watch your favorite get fucked or leave. DC is releasing a video game where the League are killed by D listers. They don’t care about quality. Capeshit is dying, just leave it alone man and it’s never going to get better.
