It was probably way easier for a Deviantart artist to find industry work because of how little competition there was compared to now. Digital art tools were way more expensive and there wasn't nearly the amount of tutorials/resources that exist today. I may be biased but it also seemed like studios were way more keen to give online artists work, probably because they weren't aware of how associating with random internet personalities could bite you in the ass
