        >Kat is a scary nightmare angel because SCIENCE!!!
So for once, someone in this thread is going to give a legitimate, non-shitpost critique. This is something that's always kind of irked me about GKC, and it's impossible to ignore due to it being one of the central themes. The idea that nature and technology are not only separate, but fundamentally clashing forces. That doesn't make any real sense if you think about for a minute. Science is the study of nature and how the physical universe functions, and technology is the application of that knowledge. These things by definition comprise some aspect of nature, so it was always... I dunno, confusing that in GKC, trying to understand how the ether works is treated as either impossible, or fundamentally misguided. Like, all this magic shit happens and people are able to harness it reliably. Why is asking how such a bad thing? Kat herself is the ultimate expression of this theme, as a nascent goddess, her aspect being science is treated as ominous and dangerous. But like, why? A computer is no less a part of nature than a flower, so The Angel TM being a problem doesn't really make sense, especially since she's easily the most benevolent deity we've seen in the comic so far. I dunno, much as I love this comic, the central theme of it is something I have a hard time squaring.

          Anonymous

Perhaps understanding the ether would destroy it. That's a very reasonable expectation and would explain why no one has ever been able to understand the ether without at the same time believing that it can not be understood. The ether can be used on the highest levels, you can make pocket dimensions and travel the stars and make imaginary things real and do magic, but even if you master all those things, you don't understand why they do what they do. It seems to be an unavoidable concession of the ether.
It'd make sense that Kat would be a scary god if she is opposed to the very nature of the ether. She might cause the death of the ether.

Personally, my theory has been for a while that Kat is constantly resetting the entire universe with her time shenanigans, due to what the norns have told her, which will happen probably when Annie dies from having a child. It would explain why Omega doesn't work properly due to Annie, but still recommends for Annie to be at the court and to stay alive. A resetting universe is also the only thing I can think of that explains everythings the norns have said.

Bruh, have you seen what we use science to do to nature? Sure, in theory they don't have to be diametrically opposed, but in practice we use science to twist nature into the form most convenient for us, when we're no outright stripping it down to bare resources; Pieces of systems built on millennia of cause and effect, ripped apart as we see fit.

            Anonymous

We are not the servants of nature and neither is the ether. The ether is MANmade. Humans (and presumably other sapient aliens, although the only sapient aliens we see in gkc are supposedly also creations of the ether) in gkc are the masters of nature.
Whatever dumb hippie idiocy you're talking about is entirely irrelevant here. Kat isn't a big scary beautiful metal angel because she ignored the Lorax.

          Anonymous

You could've saved yourself the effort of writing all that by simply reading the comic and understanding that it's never been about "nature vs science". It's all about the ether and how it interacts with various other systems. The only aspect of the story that you could interpret as "nature vs science" is the court's project to create a world without ether, but that's only if you interpret "ether" as "nature" which is a tenuous promposition that's neither entirely wrong nor entirely right.

          Anonymous

You're missing that nature in this world, or at least nature around the Court is magical. Magic vs Technology, Chaos vs Order is often explored. A literal chaos god lives in the forest just to ram it home.

Kat fricks with things because she views everything as a problem to break down. Magic in this setting exists because of belief so her need to understand how everything works is the literal direct antithesis to the ether.
The fact that Kat's entire breakthrough came from her studying nature and incorporating it into her designs and then later adding in magic too should tell you that it's not about nature vs technology.
I can't believe you'd call all the criticism shitposts and don't understand such basic shit.

Kat tech and stuff is in reality her own personal Ether magic, that it manifests as tech dos not change that is ether magic.

Thing is nobody but Kat can understand and build her magical stuff, unless their personal ether magic is the same as Kat which is impossible, because everybody is different.

Same as Diego nobody but him could make the Golems, because their creation was his own magic.

The most you could get to turn out reliable, repeatable ether stuff, is to employ mass brainwashing and indoctrination to force peoples personal ether to manifest in nearly the same way. And even then nobodies magic would be truly the same, just very close to each other.

And that just proves that is fake make believe, that has no real effect on the world.

If that had actually happened that world would at best go into a massive globe shakeup, at a minimum mass panic, suicides, governmental collapse, new religious orders starting overnight, with old ones seeing massive revival.

Wars would have started for sure in many parts of the world instantly, and it could easily have spiraled into WW3 yet none of that happened.

A cluster of dirt still orbits, a ball of burning gas uncaring what fancy make believe games the ants play.

Anon I think you're slightly exaggerating the impact something like this would have, especially in a world that seems somewhat aware of magic as it is. Even IRL i seriously doubt WWIII would happen because there's a fingerprint on the moon, what the frick would even catalyze that?

                Anonymous

That doesn't make any sense, why would governments collapse and WWIII break out? Sure there'd be panic and religious orders and shit but utter societal breakdown, collapse, and massive wars? Seriously? For all we know the wider world is pretty familiar with magic since it's been shown to have had a large impact on shaping the world, Tom's never really spelled out if things are totally hidden or not and it's clear that at least the British government at the very least is fully aware of the Court.

Yeah, it's not like Paz is bound to secrecy in any way, for example. Her whole family knows she can speak to animals. Surma and Tony were also allowed to just go and do their thing in Birmingham. Magic exists in the gkc world.

That is, UNLESS the chapter title is some crazy revelation about the world outside the court, like that it's all some post-apocalyptic fake Matrix world. Everyone is dead and that's the real reason the court wants to leave.
                Something like that.
I very much doubt that's what the chapter title means, though.

There was an old fan theory that Tea's travels with all the fricked up shit happening in the background were glimpses into the world outside of the Court, it'd be neat if that turned out to be correct.

I still wonder how much of that happening is related to the Court being something of a liminal space. Then again, the Chinese goddess of the moon visited just to be like, "Why? What the frick?"

          Anonymous

She is dangerous because she took the spectrum of Science-Ether and bent it into a circle.
The comic always treated it as something which has the potential to go horribly wrong, but I don't think I got the impression that it was seen as inherently bad, just terrifying to everybody who is used to reality where Science and Ether are distinct things which can interact with each other but are fundamentally separate.
Also, timeline frickery could very well play a part in this. Consider a machine intelligence which goes back in time to its own inception and upgrades itself to its final form immediately regardless of paradox.

Again she did not, her tech is no different from her moms computer. Their is no actual logic that can be understood and used by anyone. It just magic non since that only Kat can use. No different from Annie's Fire powers.

A seed extrapolates itself into a flower. It contains the blueprints and instructions to create a flower, and executes them when optimal conditions are reached. How is a flower not like a computer? Both simply execute instructions when conditions are met.

I assumed the reason why Kat's tech magic clashes with the ether is because the latter runs on the power of the unknown. It thrives in the, kind of obvious on retrospect, the ethereal; The ungraspable.

The ether can do incredible things because it has no understood limits. When you don't know how something works, it can be seen as larger than it is, but when you quantify something or you learn exactly how to ticks, you can also understand its limits and so what can and not function within it, losing its mystique.

It's like the Willie Coyote situation. If he runs off a cliff and doesn't look down, he will keep running, but if he looks down he will remember that the rules of gravity exist and instantly make him lose the moment of invulnerability he had. It's the reason why kat sees some of the Court's stuff as mundane shit while others see it as absolutely fantastical; Her powers lead her to understand how things work and so it makes them mundane.
