Alien and Aliens are great in their own ways, 3 onwards gets progressively worse. One particular annoyance of Prometheus and Covenant to me is abandoning the retro-futuristic style of the computers and other set designs. Alien Isolation is the only new entry that got it right.

I'm glad there won't be a sequel. Loved the game but Amanda should be a one and done story. They can easily create a new character and situation set after Aliens that would be just as good and not make the whole storyline ridiculous with Amanda battling the aliens across decades and dozens of events. It's what they should have done to Ellen after Aliens, let her rest and make someone new.

Brian Glover was a weird casting choice. For decades he'd been popping up all over British TV as a kind of stock Comedy Yorkshireman. Then he suddenly appears in a big-budget sci-fi movie.

Alien is great but has some unwarranted goofiness because it was some of Ridley's earliest work, Aliens plays it too safe and the appeal has faded for me over the years but it's the good 1980s Cameron so it gets a pass. Alien3 has a bunch of stuff I can enjoy like the sets/music/acting even if it's not that good of a movie as a whole. Resurrection is meh, Jeunet and Whedon are pulling in different directions so all the potentially good stuff gets wasted. AvP is peak Anderson video game nonsense, Requiem would be alright if I could fricking see anything. Love Prometheus, Covenant needed more David.

  14. 2 weeks ago

Alien and Aliens are the only legitimate ones.
Alien 3 is the creation of cynical executives and hinges on a plot hole.
Alien Resurrection has no point to exist but keep the charade going.
AvP is dumb fun but not canon.
    AvPR is repulsive Z-grade trash.
Prometheus is the exact inverse of Alien, an A-grade idea with B-movie execution.
    Haven't seen Alien Covenant.

    -3 assembly cut.

Resurrection is awful for truly breaking tone in the worst way, characters are one step away from 4th wall breaking tier humor.
Feels fake instead of space truckers or believable characters dealing with random space horror.
Not unwatchable but not an alien movie.

I don't even bother with anything else.

Aliens was fun, but honestly it made a step to wrong direction, making xenos some kind of dumb bugs.
A lot of Alien mystery was gone once it came out.
I still like it, but it was Aliens that caused franchise go from space horror to summer slasher blockbuster.
After Alien 3 was a failure it only cemented this approach.

It's the closest thing to a Star Trek or Star Wars in my life. I've seen all the movies, read most of the comics and books, etc. It's weird hearing people who say there isn't enough material for a franchise and that it should have ended with two films.

To be fair most of the EU that isn't a rehash of the first two movies are the same story about scientists researching xenomorphs until they escape and kill everyone.

I mean there really isn't that much to the alienverse. There's the Xenomorph and the scummy weyland corp, every film follows the same structure of a team on a ship encountering the alien. Engineers are probably the only interesting addition to the franchise since the first film

Don't forget all the Blade Runner fan fiction shoe horned into the series.

        Anonymous

Yeah and the only thing they can do is keep on increasing the scale of the disaster, so in the EU the Earth gets completely infested and turned into a giant hive. Where to go from there? Uh well um what if we do something with prometheus baldies? Or the predators again? Or both at once - yes, that.

I like the Engineers a lot and it bothers me a lot of people got filtered by such a good concept. There was a lot that needs to be said, but my take away was simple enough.

        >Engineers created humans as that’s what they do, they seed life as their primary goal.
        >Humans reach the same level of intelligence and ingenuity as the Engineers
        >Humans create mechanical life forms instead of Organic
        >Engineers plan to destroy the humans entirely, because humans began to seed planets with these androids to
        >Engineer seems fine in the presence of the humans, until David speaks his language
        >Engineer is completely triggered by David and try’s to complete the mission
        >David later understands this, and turns the bioweapon onto the engineers

        Simple as that

          Anonymous

Also the scene where David and the new model android is really awesome.

The ozymandias quote that David recites is actually mocking the king of kings and he doesn’t realize it. That’s why he gets so triggered when the android asks if he knows who that quote is from. David thinks it’s ozymandias but in reality it was a philosopher who wrote a letter mocking the king -

          >My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!
It’s a joke because the statue was amongst ruins of dust and sand, of nothing compelling but death and wasteland, a reminder to David that he could never create beauty

The Alien Tabletop RPG (which is canon), according to Fox, tells us what happened to the Engineers. They are at war with one of their creations, and fled known space to save themselves (pic related)

Alien Isolation realized that problem with showing them in the light so much and solved it pretty handily: give them digitigrade legs making them extra tall/imposing and an enormously long tail. They look much more silly when they're short and essentially a man's body with elongated head.

Only Alien is canon. Aliens is dream that Riply has in cryosleep, and is her subconscious trying to cope with the Alien killing her crew. She invents a way she can easily understand them (they are space ants, and isn't a cosmic horror, so know what they are and we can beat them), invents a crew that survives and kicks their asses (the marine), and invents a surrogate family that loves her (Newt and Hicks).

prometheus is unironically the most interesting alien movie since the first one.

Aliens is overrated B-grade action movie slop. prometheus is more interesting and thought provoking then aliens and also has better cinemateography and a better ost. The deleted scenes for prometheus makes it even better and probably should have been included in the movie too.

As it's often been said, the scariest part of Prometheus was its editing.

great movies, I have seen the 2 or 3 times! (except 3 because that one is stupid) I really like the default "scheme" and tropes the movies have, [exploration, finding the eggs, AI, evil cooperation]

Resurrection is still my fav since I were a kid.
All the alien movies feel really comfy to me for some reason.
Also I don't care what anyone says the xenomorps DO NOT have eyes. This makes them far more scary because even then they somehow always know where you are. Spooky.

They definitely don’t have eyes they have a detection system that’s superior to sight likely has to do with sonar, they do click

The alien can survive in space, as we see at the end of the first movie.
It also tries to climb back aboard the shuttle, so it must have been able to "see" it.
                Bat-clicks, my arse.

Was it in Resurrection that we saw the POV of a xenomorph while it ran around in corridors? I have rewatched it a few weeks ago (the director's cut) and there was no such scene. Did my mind just make it up? I swear there was a scene like that.

Alien 3. There's also a scene where Charles Dance is preparing to inject Ripley with a sedative, which is seen briefly from the Alien's POV. It's why it decides to whack him there and then.

Alien and Aliens are both great in different ways. I'm glad they stopped making any canon movies after that, so they could go out on top.

The Alien is meant to be a cosmic horror we will never understand. How it sees doesn't need to be revealed.

this, also resurrection would have 10x better if Ripley wasn't in it. the whole concept of her character in 4 really cheesed up the story

I only liked the Xeno from the first movie. Later they, to my big disappointment, decided to make them a moronic furgay-tier hybrid of werewolf and raptor who just ran around screeching and spraying saliva.

I love Aliens but it ruined the franchise. Alien was genuinely frightening movie with great effects and cinematography. Turning the alien into braindead bugs was a shitty thing to do. Atleast have one smart alien that evolves beyond its primitive violent state.

      >love Aliens but it ruined the franchise
made* you mean. it MADE the franchise. There would BE NO franchise without Aliens and it would have been a forgotten 80's movie. What are all the games, comics, toys, sequels about? fricking ALIENS. And no, Alien was not and is not very scary. It is a man in a rubber suit moving slowly and barely on screen because he's only scary to boomers who had never seen a slasher movie before. Aliens on the other hand was far scarier and way more entertaining. And if you'd rub your two braincells together, you'd see that far from being a stupid bug, the creatures were way smarter in Aliens as well. But nah, you'll keep jerking off over your shitty "le perfect" being that can hardly kill a few space hicks then die to a single woman with a puny harpoon launcher in an enclosed space.
