To be honest, reading the New Testament moved me away from Christianity.

Apparently this is the literal word of God and his followers. Yet I felt nothing as I read it. Absolutely nothing.

Then I decided to read the Holy Qu’ran... and Mashallah, I felt as though Allah himself gave me a warm embrace.
I converted to Islam very soon after.

I'm the exact same way. The entire Bible is so derivative and so obviously composed for political purposes that I absolutely can't take it seriously as something with a divine origin

Most of the Old Testament stories were pretty much ripped off from older tales of mythologies from earlier civilizations

Harrelson follows a raw vegan diet.[48][49] Along with not eating meat or dairy, Harrelson does not eat sugar or flour.

literally because of pussy. Most of the time you will find that christianization of some land follows from the conversion of its king. Why did the king convert? Because his wife did.
Same goes for plenty of christian philosophers/apologists nowadays.

                Anonymous

No thats just the official story, the real reason is that people who converted to christianism have a higher morale and at the end a bigger political impact, constantinus converted because the christians were the most resilient religious community throughout the different epidemics and wars throughout the empire and despite the persecutions under diocletian
Same goes for slav kings and franks, they didnt convert because their wives told them but because it was the only way for them to keep power, even today it is scientifically shown that religious people live longer than atheists

I have always personally felt like Jesus was probably just a normal human being that was kinda channeling God's words and wishes. I don't believe that there was actually a man with super powers walking around healing people and rising from beyond after his death. I think those are either just completely made up or vastly embellished.

I believe in some parts of Christianity, and I generally like a good part of the teachings of the bible, but I don't see a 2000 year old book as gospel. I also believe there is a God who started things, but then evolution took over. What should I describe myself as?

                Anonymous

You don't know anything about the Christian God or His teachings if you think the Bible was not the word of God and Jesus wasn't God. You're just a deist who think the stories in Bible have good moral lessons.
It doesn't matter though. Religion is about what you believe in, it's not about trying to fit in with a group. You don't have to describe yourself as anything. I think people who follow everything without even questioning don't have their own beliefs. I think you have to question everything and come to a conclusion on your own to truly be a believer. Otherwise you're just a brainwashed moron.

You're probably right. I think a lot of it also depends on where you are from. Reading the bible made me Christian, and having people point to specific things in it to dissuade me made me more extreme. Every complaint I have with the bible is that parts of it seem too merciful, too lenient, or insufficiently condemnatory towards wickedness and sin. Evangelism also seems a bit fruity to me because I don't WANT fricking infidels in my religion, they ruin everything. If you let one of these liberal homosexuals into heaven he'd start protesting and rioting demanding we open the borders to hell and allow demons to invade because their food is good or some stupid shit like that.

Everyone who complains about the bible, invariably, without fail, is some kind of fricking degenerate who is asshurt that his particular sin is condemned. I understand not believing, but this shit is just so cringe--yes Woody, you, a guy who lies for a living on camera, have profound insights into the bible that the rest of us just haven't considered. Why don't you just admit you frick women other than your wife, Woods.

The bible has nothing to do with Christianity.
The old testament is literally just Judaism.
The new testament is about Jesus and was written after he died.
Jesus was all about "love thy neighbor" and that's it. Christianity is simply being a good person, nothing else.

        >The old testament is literally just Judaism.
        >Christianity is simply being a good person, nothing else.
The Bible is literally 30% prophecy telling of Christ, even naming him in Isaiah and telling of his crucifixion (Isaiah 53). Jesus did say the law is fulfilled in 2 things; love God with all of your heart, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. He also said he was God and was killed for it (blasphemy is the charge which got him to the cross). CS Lewis wrote a book called Lord Lunatic or Liar. You have to pick one, it isn't just about being a good person.

I started seeing things that made me ask, 'Is God really speaking through this instrument?' My eyes opened to the reality of the Bible being just a document to control people."[54][55] He describes himself as having "a strong spiritual life".[56]

      >Woody from Cheers is the expert on Theology...

Also, not true. There is heavy Ugaritic influence in Genesis and even some in Psalms. But, if you actually study the context, you will know they were writing to their audience who knew those tales and previously followed their gods. You will see they wrote it to mock the other gods. Some Psalms are "dis tracks" if you actually know what you are reading, and they are hilarious. If you are not trolling and just someone who read an opinion of someone that made sense on the surface but was a deliberate attempt to subvert God's Word, you should study Near East 2nd Temple literature for context of the "Old Testament." If you want some good reading, try Dead Sea Scrolls, especially 1st Enoch.

Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes to the Father, except by Me." It's never too late.

But most people would agree with that point about democracy, bigotry and these other sorts ideologies.

He's right and most smart people eventually come to this conclusion as they get older. They also come to the conclusion that it's a "necessary evil". There's billions of people in the world and they're all looking to get theirs and make themselves happy. If this means fricking over others or killing them, then so be it. The vast majority of the population is fricking stupid, reactionary and driven by emotions. If there wasn't some form of spiritual law that can get ingrained into them as children, that promises rewards/punishments after life for following rules that benefits a healthy society, well, civilization wouldn't last that long. The smart and decent people will always be vastly outnumbered. You're starting to see the ridiculousness in american society now that it has become much less godly compared to the mid-1900's

Buddhism is closest to that hitting the nail on the head feeling that ive ever got with a religion, but there is plenty in the other major religions that point to some underlying deep truth. Problem is the abrahamic ones are way too obsessed with time, place and person (i.e. this specific guy is holy, listen to him) and with the books and words themselves - buddhism has a great benefit in that schools of buddhism recognise that things like this can themselves get in the way of ultimate truth. I think Christianity should evolve to embrace its mystic elements much more than it currently does, Islam too (but Islam is so political its even harder to do for them than for Christians)

He's right and like the fpbp said you are literally fricking unhinged if you take this shit seriously after reading the Bible + textual criticism. This is what literally stopped me from converting to Catholicism lol, I had some hunch that God was real and the Mother Church was the real church but then I read the Bible and HOLY JEJ this shit is ridiculous and fake and evil.

      >look at me I heckin love Jesus

They know their arguments for being atheist and disliking the Bible are pathetic and influence by contemporary lib morality. They know people will make fun of them for being morons. So they never justify themselves.

You're asking for specifics but the problem is nobody cares and that shit's gay and autistic, do you really want a thread of rigorous theology?

Okay I'll give you an example (out of a million): Queen Esther is now known to not be a real person. But most Christians who even know who she is think she was real, and pastors are reluctant to dispel this illusion. The mainstream thought in seminaries is that Esther is bullshit and the book of Esther is metaphorical. The reason I mention all this is because I was reading about seminaries and one of the things that typically absolutely destroys students in those classes is the fact that Esther is a "metaphor" at best, most christians are esther literalists so if you tell them this they will shit their pants.

It is this and a million other things that makes me think there is no church or body that represents god on earth, it's all a meme. Most Catholics for example do not even believe in transubstantiation, a core tenet of their own faith, and prots are pro-gay marriage. Now do you see why people don't talk about this shit? It's boring.

The devil literally and unironically appeared to me in my bedroom when I was about 21 and said he'd give me anything I wanted in the world if I worshipped him and helped him lead souls to hell. Pure Faustian pact shit. Was surprising because I wasn't even sure the devil existed at this point, though I'd been experiencing some spooky shit in the weeks leading up to that. I knew I'd burn in hell if I did it so I asked him what could possibly make it worth it, and he said getting vengeance against God / spiting him for all eternity, because I'd gone through hard time before and had a lot of anger towards God I didn't know about. Anyway I considered it but then Jesus appeared to me also like in pic related, the Gospel scene where the Roman soldiers dressed him up and mocked him. He didn't even say anything he just looked at me and I knew I couldn't go through with it. So I asked him to help me and the devil left immediately. 100% true story. I'm guessing Woody was tempted by the devil (not necessarily by appearing, usually he's more subtle) along the lines of faith vs. money, fame, women.

The atheists who had all the answers couldnt answer me when people started cutting their penises off while the bible did.

You said that the world would get better

      It didnt

You said that people would be more free

      They arent

You said that you were more moral than my God.

      You definitely arent.

How many of you guys complain about pedo priests and then cry about dicky on Cinemaphile and Cinemaphile? How many of you complain about trannies now despite nodding along to gay marraige back then?
How many of you said that science will advance our entire race when you now doubt the vax?

Atheists dont know. Theyre just scared that the answer to religion is a "no" so they prepare themselves for the worst.

I'm an atheist now but about my previous belief, it's pretty simple. Combination of upbringing, ignorance, and a hope for something greater than the hellish habitat we actually inhabit. One wishes there is a God because if there isn't, then the daily atrocities that happen mean nothing. Also in some ways it is quite narcissistic, "Oh you mean I'm actually very important and not an evolved ape and the creator of the universe loves me eternally while making me in his image and cares about my wellbeing? I have this cool thing called a soul that lasts even after I die? Tell me more." pic related is a peak example.

I'm an Amerigolem and as many founding fathers and writers of earlier times observed, religions makes people better citizens. Which is fricking depressing because it is all a lie. But perhaps we are better off living in a world of clueless theists like I used to be.

I believe Jesus at his words. They were witnessed by people that wrote them and were willing to die for it. Not like a fanatic who would die for a belief based on doctrine, but die for what they witnessed. These men saw Christ perform miracles and met with him after his resurrection. If you can disprove the resurrection, I am all for it. The Bible is the story of God's redemption of man, through his son, who paid the penalty for our sin that we can't pay on our own and God raised him from the dead. He is coming back.

Of all religious texts, Jesus is the only one that claimed to be God and had multiple people (says over 500 at the time the letter was written, that would be alive to testify to it) witness his death and resurrection. I know it because he changed me when I surrendered my sin to him and asked for forgiveness. No one has to go to hell, where people pay for their own sin. Eternal life and forgiveness is free. If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is lord and God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Anyone who takes a serious, non biased look at the best NDE experiences, realizes that theres more after death than just death. Denial is only possible if you've already made up your mind that there's nothing after life, and will use the most ridiculous excuses to explain away some of the events.

With that said, it seems that "hell" is just you, alone, in a void, with your own thoughts, until you ask for help, at which point, you get help.

Heaven is much less clear, but before entering, one of the most common experiences is a life review, where the focus is exclusively on how you treated other people, and if other people did wrong unto you, you are made to see what made them that way, to better understand and forgive them. You see the hurt you caused other people directly, so you actually truly know why it was wrong. Specifically, when you treat people with INTENTIONAL malice. Then you pretty much judge yourself, ask for forgiveness, are forgiven, and move on. Literally none of your personal accomplishments, activities, jobs, hobbies, etc. etc. mean anything. Everything seems to be completely focused on how you are treated, and treat others. Which I find very interesting.

There is no proof like you want, currently. If you die, float into another room, hear a conversation or see certain things you would not otherwise see, come back to life, and recall the experience, with the people in the other room confirming that they were indeed having that conversation, and that those items were indeed there, that is not verifiable proof.

Even if you're in a medical setting like a hospital undergoing brain surgery where they measure your brainwaves, and you claim to have a NDE and saw everything that was going on in the surgery, hearing the conversations, went over to the next room, heard convo's and saw things there, and recalled it all upon waking, and the medical staff confirmed everything you said, despite there being no conscious activity in your brain...that's still not the proof you're looking for. The skeptical explanation is that the person either was hallucinating, and got lucky, or that people were "in on it", and were lying. Occasionally you get far out skeptical explanations, like in one case where during surgery a woman's ears were completely covered, so she couldn't hear anything, and yet, had a NDE and says she heard entire conversations between the staff. An explanation was that the sound waves created by speaking reverberated her bones, and her brain translated those vibrations into recognizable speech. That's a more plausible explanation that life after death to many skeptics.

They ARE working on trying to get verifiable, objective evidence. You'll have to look up the AWARE & AWARE2 studies for more information on that.

That's fine, as long as you're consistent in thinking that any experience anyone has ever had, yours included, that's verifiable with other people as having confirmed that experience is, by default, false, as there is no proof.

Personality is ego, experience, and genetics. It seems to makes the most sense to me that the soul is something much more fundamental than surface level personality. But it helps to think of your brain as a receiver of consciousness rather than a producer. Similar to a radio, if the parts malfunction in some way, the signal gets through, but there are alterations to the output. If the radio dies, the signal doesn't die.

Im more curious as to why how you treat others, seems to be the most important factor. Specifically, understanding at a fundamental level why you shouldn't be malicious, or why you should understand why people are the way they are. If you're in the afterlife...why is that so important? We got sent to earth for dozens of years and the only thing that mattered was how you treat others? Why? What's so important about that where it requires living here like this?
