Has DC simply lost the cinematic race?

Critics and audiences alike called Black Adam derivative and “Marvel-lite”.

>The tone was compared to the MCU’s
>Hawkman was compared to Iron Man, Black Panther and Cyclops
>Doctor Fate was compared to Doctor Strange
>Atom Smasher was compared to Spider-Man, Ant-Man and Deadpool
>Cyclone was compared to Storm
>The JSA was compared to the Avengers and their mansion with a jet compared to the X-Men’s mansion with a jet
>Eternium was compared to Vibranium and the Intergang to the MCU’s innumerous evil paramilitary organizations
>Even specific scenes like Doctor Fate having apocalyptic visions and knowing he will die because he can no longer see his own future were compared to similar moments in the Doctor Strange films

The thing is most of that stuff is straight from the comics. Marvel just seems to have beaten DC to most of the comic book concepts that they both share, and if that is case, everything that DC releases in the future, no matter how faithful to the source, will just be viewed as discount MCU by normies and underperform as a result. The race is pretty much over, and DC seems to have lost.

Making it a race was the problem. They should've slowed down even more, not tried to jump to the fricking new gods. There's barrels full of galactic characters and storylines they could've done before even mentioning Darkseid.

Slowing down is what got us garbage like birds of prey and ww84 and TSS
Darkseid stepping on steppenwolf's head while staring down the JL was the most hype moment of the past 4 years

WB kept getting in Snyder's way while he was setting up an Injustice-based story. Now Marvel is putting Secret Wars in theaters which is basically Marvel's Injustice. Just like Marvel's Multiverse getting to theaters before Flashpoint and Crisis

Snyder is busy working at netflix for the next several years, but they can easily follow up Flash with Injustice. Get Snyder to sign on as an executive producer and give them his rough story outline. And then leave Gunn to find a director and writer to make it work (if he doesn't do it himself).
Would create a wealth of good grace that the fans would love too.
And if they announce a Superman film with Cavill at the same time as the next film afterwards, it would cull all the whiners complaining about Superman being too moody

I really do wonder what Gunn's first DC movie as Prez will be. He was offered Superman when he was first poached by WB but Gunn told Hamada he wasn't interested, but now that he's directly invested in WB's success rather than just a director he might step in just to salvage the character lmao

Their constant direction changes and lack of consistency in terms of quality means most people have lost faith in them. I’ll probably never watch another DC movie in the theatre after the shitshow that tss was

I liked the characters but the story is just so bad and also harley quinn added nothing to the movie and I didn’t see the point of adding her when she had her own movie around the same time

It’s the same with the rest of the DC movies, I love the characters but the story is just so boring that the movies are not rewatchable for me

            1. She's a ridiculously bankable character. She's also the most well-known character from the first film and audiences would all be expecting her return in any seuquels - moreso than any other character
            2. Birds of Prey really didn't do her justice. Her storyline in Gunn's Suicide Squad absolutely mogged her action scenes in BoP

Harley, Deadshot, King Shark, Bronze Tiger, Boomerang, and Rick Flagg are in the most iconic versions of the Suicide Squad. Not including at least a few of them would be blasphemous.

As Harley, Deadshot, and Shark are the faces of current and modern Suicide Squad. And Flag, Boomer, and Tiger are the face of the vintage Suicide Squad.

Actually the fact that we still haven't had Bronze Tiger is weird. Weirder still is getting Bloodsport before Tiger.

At least with the snyderverse the tonal problems would be fixed. The DCEU is a mess of tonal shifts and dropped plot points

WB had a decades-long head start to dig deep into DC before 2008, but they kept making batshit instead. Even if 90s 00s DC movies looked dated or campy compared to MCU, the public wouldn't think "Marvel already did this," they'd think the opposite

If they are trying to do the family comedy movies then yeah.

But if the embraced their strong style which is the grim dark melancholy style then, no.

Joker, the Batman, Watchmen, Sandman, and the Dark Knight Trilogy are all infinitely better films than ANYTHING done by Marvel's formulaic insipid cringe comedies.

Problem is the suits and nerds want them to surrender to the Marvel formula as evidenced by them hiring Gunn after the Suicide Squad cringe that was a cheap knock off of Guardians.

Frick Marvel Frick anyone who wants more Love and Thunder instead of more Dark Knight.

DC's only chance is if Marvel an heros, which is kind of happening right now, so if DC doesn't frick up big time (and I think this is why they canned Batgirl) and keep their chin up, they just might get to Marvel's level in a few years

Marvel and xmen have showed all their characters and stuff already so even though DC was usually first in the comics they’re always going to be last when it comes to movies. All I could think about during the scene when the justice society flies out of the mansion was that they’ve just copied the xavier school and xmen jet lmao

With this and What marvel is doing. I feel like a bigger problem with these movies is they are always making "team" movies. Here's Black Adam...and crew. Here's this Dr. Strange movie...and his sassy sidekick, and old teacher, and ex girlfriend, and the villain that just wants love.

But with Black Adam specifically they have this annoying side kick kid trying to acclimate him to the modern world and his family and the sorry state of their country. You know what this movie needs. Like 4 other guys whose story and motivations we need to flesh out. The title says Black Adam and his back story and motivation is this shit they throw in a 4 minute flash back instead of making him the lead character and building it up through out the movie. That kid and his good nature and all that shit would have been a great analog for his son. But they can't go into that because we have to show the new kids on JSA awkwardly flirting or that Hawkman and Fate are old buddies who have been through shit together. All these movies that com out now have no idea or understanding that you have to or should focus on developing as few characters as possible and the rest are there for support the story of those few. Every character need equal time and development now and it makes these movies shit. Like it or not X-Men movies were mostly about Wolverine, because it's just a better narrative to focus the story through a specific clear viewpoint.

A financial analysis shows Batman v Superman actually did make a slim ($105m) profit for Warner. They were stupid as frick to shut down the Snyderverse instead of retool it, then reboot later. They unnecessarily burned money and divided the viewer base. They even wasted Cavill's prime years and Superman looks walled. I'm glad Zaz took out the trash and is trying to course correct

Marvel keeps a momentum, that's all you need.
DC has a mental breakdown every single time a movie flops. Zaslav is just another schizophrenic episode. I still prefer their movies and the mess behind the scenes is always entertaining. Gunn and The Rock is DC clearly trying to ape Marvel success when they have stuff like Joker making billions.
