        >still is the largest franchise with the most fans

        Explain that

This is the only real answer. Lucas always had interesting ideas and a knack for naming characters, but he needed large amounts of incredibly talented collaborators in order for it to turn out well. After empire he wrested back control, which is why that movie is the weakest out of the OT. It was still directed by an actual director though so it wasn't too bad. The prequels are what happen when you just let George do everything without anyone to challenge him. The sequels are what happen when you have the "professionals" doing everything without any of George's ideas. The extended universe and the shows and the video games are all good or bad or inbetween because of the writing.

one good example: what the frick is the point of a wand? it ‘channels’ magic to make users more powerful but the most powerful wizard of the original series, Dumbledore, does crazy shit without one. In some Pottermore blogs (canon afaik), Rowling explained some Black person school in the heart of darkness teaches all their students to do magic without wands. It’s just arbitrary bullshit. The more Rowling added to the world, the less it all made sense, and I say this as a huge fan.

Good lore, world-building, ships, and characters to keep people interested. Plus the EU has a lot of great stuff from books to video games. The fact that George didn't milk the franchise and kept it at the 3 movies for so long helps with it not being over-saturated.

      “Content Monasticism”, I’d say.

  23. 2 weeks ago

Lucas was smart enough to keep the IP relevant by licensing new stories and converting a film trilogy into a sandbox that almost any story could be told in. Going into a bookstore in the 90s, you’d have a whole section of Star Wars books with new characters and adventures. Same with games and comics. ThatMs what keeps the fandom alive and also introduces new fans.

That marketing was so successful that most other sci fi properties started to copy it to a lesser and effectiveness.

That gets us from ‘82 to ‘99 when the prequels release. Again a huge marketing push with ancillary material fleshing out the timeline, getting a whole new generation into Clone Troopers and Jedi at the height of the Republic.

Its a content schedule way more similar to a videogame series that has regular expansions and content updates.

George had his faults but he knew how to run a business. All this seems simple because we take it for granted now, but this was a cutting edge gamble for him when he licensed the first book (ANH novelization) to be written.

The real answer is that Americans desperately want a modern folk mythos and a heroes journey they can relate to. Star Wars got really close and the prequels even modernized it with the political landscape of the day but Disney is dead set on doing anything that would be that empowering.
