I liked The French Dispatch though the middle story with the students was just okay. I did not really care for Asteroid City at all. He still might be capable of making another great film.

Same. I didn't like the cartoon chase scene during the Jeffrey Wright segment though.

Prison artist was kino, chef was good, student protest was trash.
I had the same problem with both movies: they were spread too thin. Trying to do too much with too many characters, so it all felt comparatively shallow.
The prison artist story was great. It could’ve been its own film, or just a really strong short film.
Asteroid City had like 5 premises that could’ve been their own movie. Throwing them all together makes for a fun little ride, but you could never explore the characters deeply enough to make for a truly soulful work. There just isn’t enough time.

Maybe I ought to watch it again. I was kind of drunk and the stage play framing didn't sit well with me.

I was prepared to dislike the stage framing, but then some of the most heartfelt scenes were outside the play and I ended up half-wishing the framing device was the whole movie.

It was pretentious Hollywood fellation that insists upon itself. Nice Hockney inspired art style though

Fellatious perhaps, but he's been too consistent with his style and its evolution to be called 'pretentious'. And his movies are pretty atypical for Hollywood even if they are within the system.

Asteroid City and The French Dispatch were excellent. The caped crusaders won't understand, but that's OK. They have their own class of kino.

Who even funds this played out art hoe shit? People gave Adam Sandler shit for fleecing the streaming sites to fund his friends vacations but Wes Anderson does the same low effort shit and has tastelets defending him. What a crazy world we live in.

I don't think you can say he's a hack. He's a competent writer and director with a very specific and meticulous style, a cast of skilled actors who enjoy working with him, and compared to a lot of other films in the 2010s-2020s he works with a much tighter budget. I think Asteroid City cost 25mil to make and made 54mil. You might not like his style but I don't think he can be called a hack.

what does it mean when one director's parody outperforms the vast majority of his contemporaries?

Dispatch was peak quirky but it still has charm, and the performances are solid all around even if they're given such a short time. Asteroid City is too much of everything; too many characters (and everyone's phoning it in), too many little subplots, too meta, too quirky overall. He needs to ditch Coppola as a writing partner, get Owen Wilson on the desk, and scale the frick down.

Asteroid City, yes. French Dispatch was peak Anderson, it was everything his filmography was leading up to.
The only way for him to bring it back is to have a complete stylistic overhaul. He's burnt his own style out.

Asteroid City is just terrible from start to finish.

I can see people not liking FD and I personally found AC overdone but the real point of self parody was the Roald Dahl adaptation on Netflix, holy frick they can be exhausting and they're only like 15 minutes a piece

if you told me they were directed by someone who hates Anderson I'd believe toy

    >two movie with gays in

That and these two films were trying to be philosophical and forget about telling stories.
He should make more movies like moonrise kingdom.

With The French Dispatch it felt like he was trying too hard, while with Asteroid City it's like he wasn't trying at all and just phoned it in.

I felt the opposite, French Dispatch was him coasting on every stylish trick he's done to say "I like boomer journalism", while City was going way too hard about LIFE and STORIES and ART and DEATH, maaaaan.

Whatever happened between Owen Wilson and Wes was the downfall of his movies. I'm wondering if Owen Wilson is the Larry David to Wes Anderson's Seinfeld. Owen wrote Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and Tenenbaums. Aka. The good ones.

I think Wes Anderson is goofy but I think he did the right thing by distancing himself from Owen Wilson after buddy did a womanly pill "suicide" because Dax Shepard fricked his b***h.

Bottle Rocket and Rushmore are meh, never understood the love. Rushmore is better than Bottle Rocket which is just a completely mediocre film in all regards, but still it's not nearly as good as everyone seems to think it is.
Anderson's best are Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr Fox. The latter one is my personal favourite.
