He's right, not that it's a bad film but it's definitely Lars' worst. The middle act meanders far too much and has lazy directing.

              Anonymous

this isn't even close to being Lars worst movie and I don't think you've seen his entire filmography if you think this is the case. Manderlay, Boss of It All and The Element of crime are all clearly worse and it's not even up for debate.

Nymphomaniac is his weakest. It has all his bad habits and not enough philosophical substance nor moralising message, besides "sex is bad if you overdo it". Then again people still get filtered by nymphomaniac so I guess no matter how blunt the message is some people still miss it.

the most interesting thing about it is realizing that Lar's Hitler outburst at Cannes was actually him autistically trying out a speech from the film, so excited by his own ideas that he forgot to think about how they would be viewed out of context.

        Anonymous

        >trying out a speech from the film
that had nothing to do with this movie and it probably wasn't even on his mind. he's just talking about his family tree. although this movie is a big meta commentary about his works and critical perception of him as a director/film maker.

I was 18 years old and I was really disturbed, since I had never seen transactional sex/abortion dealt with in a film. Especially the way she fricks the guy, then showers and goes to spend the night with her boyfriend and his parents. I love the implication that god DOES EXIST and LET IT ALL HAPPEN on top of erasing jack's trail marks on the old lady. The reveal that hell does indeed exist physically and emits a high pitch sound able to be detected (which is the condensed cries of billions of souls) is chilling. I could go on and on, like for instance the last set of murders in which he wants to kill many tied people with a full metal jacket bullet and how it is presented in a comedic fashion. The way the camera is used as a tool for storytelling...Truly a horror /dark humor masterpiece if not for trier's occasional fart sniffing. Unironically one my top 5 favs
