Hayao Miyazaki destroys Peter Jackson's LOTR

>“Americans shoot things and they blow up and the like, so as you’d expect, they make movies like that,” said Miyazaki at the time.

>“If someone is the enemy, it’s okay to kill endless numbers of them,” he continued. “Lord of the Rings is like that. If it’s the enemy, there’s killing without separation between civilians and soldiers. That falls within collateral damage. How many people are being killed in attacks in Afghanistan? The Lord of the Rings is a movie that has no problem doing that [not separating civilians from enemies, apparently]. If you read the original work, you’ll understand, but in reality, the ones who were being killed are Asians and Africans. Those who don’t know that, yet say they love fantasy are idiots.”

>“Even in the Indiana Jones movies, there is a white guy who, ‘bang,’ shoots people, right? Japanese people who go along and enjoy with that are unbelievably embarrassing. You are the ones that, ‘bang,’ get shot. Watching [those movies] without any self-awareness is unbelievable. There’s no pride, no historical perspective. You don’t know how you are viewed by a country like America.”

>“I dislike the United States that dropped the nuclear bombs and does not regret it.” He added that he was “against Americanization” and “hate[d] people who are proud that cheap Japanese cars are popular in America, and I look at people who wear badges of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force that filled Vietnam with dioxins as enemies.” He also claimed to be “Anti-jeans, anti-bourbon, anti-burgers”, “Anti-fried chicken, anti-cola, anti-American coffee”, and “Anti-New York, Anti-West Coast, Disneyland go back to America!”

Tolkien gave them a bit more moral complexity in LotR. I think goblins as evil monsters worked better in The Hobbit than in LotR because The Hobbit obeys fairytale logic, whereas LotR strays a little closer to moral realism. I think you're right that Tolkien was uncomfortable with a race of sapient, ensouled beings who were apparently just irredeemably evil.

As I recall, even though the Wild Men were allied with Sauron, he still gave them some moral agency, like they had allied with Sauron because they hated Gondor for some ancient reason, or something.

The old Miyazaki interview that pops up time to time.

Didn't Tolkien himself regret the goblins/orcs being totally irredeemably evil monsters though

They're fucking goblins. Who the hell sees a hideous goblin living in a cave and says "AH YES IT IS AN ASIAN OR AFRICAN"

They were tainted by morgoth's fea so there's really nothing contentious about it unless you consider men similarly so in which case you could counter by offering that they have different levels of corruption.

Regarding orcs and the like in the Lord of the Rings. The two orc captains talking in Shelob's lair indicate that orcs don't like being under a boss such as Sauron, but as humans hate him more than they do orcs, he's the only thing standing between them. This indicates that orcs must fight humans just to survive, not simply to be mean, even if they may like that too. The talk between the two orcs hunting Frodo and Sam in Mordor indicates orcs seem to have an unwritten agreement or understanding of supporting even different tribes of fellow orc over other less related beings like the oppressive Nazgul. In the Hobbit there is an authorative voice describing facts about the events as if they happened a long time ago, and it says at the time of the events of The Hobbit the goblins (orcs) had not advanced in their technology quite so far yet, but by the time of the authorative voice, it's said they likely invented the devices for killing large numbers of people at once and things with wheels and explosions. This indicates they were not hunted down but have survived into far future where they build things with engines. Gandalf talked of having pity over even the "slaves" of Sauron. Great deal of the story revolved around being merciful to Gollum and how it paid off in the end. At the end in Shire, it’s pointed out in detail that Frodo no longer partook in any fighting and simply voiced out his wish for others not to execute any of the captured half-orc men of Saruman, while the other hobbits like Merry and Pippin didn’t care about such things as much. Frodo was considered the most optimal by Bilbo after all. This indicates that inside the story between the good characters there is disagreement over how much mercy they should give the wrongdoers, and some good characters are clearly ”gooder” than others, with Gandalf, Frodo and maybe Bilbo being near the top.

Yeah, it was something he grappled with as a Catholic. Orcs have souls and by definition should have free will too, so an Orc should be able to embrace Good and become Redeemed, they just don't for some reason. He went back and forth on whether or not they were connected to Elves, too. I always liked the interpretation that an Orc is basically just what an evil Elf is. There are corrupted Elves who do manage to retain their beauty and skill, but most become foul little things that hate the world and can only create weapons and brute instruments. It also nicely explains why Dwarfs have such an antipathy for Elves: every Elf has the potential to become an Orc, and there are a looooot of Orcs out there.

As I recall, even though the Wild Men were allied with Sauron, he still gave them some moral agency, like they had allied with Sauron because they hated Gondor for some ancient reason, or something.

The Dunlendings hate the Rohirrim because the Rohirrim conquered them and drove them out of the land. One of the Wild Men even calls them out on hunting his people for sport.
The Southerners/Easterners are also explicitly not evil people, they're just misguided. The famous moment where Sam recognizes the horror of war is explicitly him contemplating the body of a dead (non-white) foreigner. In the film they give the scene to Faramir, making the brotherhood of Men even more explicit.

His films are a way to both reconcile his family's part in the war, his cynicism against life, his failure as a father, his success as the best mangaka in japan, his love for nature, etc. He is a pretty interesting guy if you ignore his ramblings and concentrate on how he makes art still using pencil while not having an ending before he begins directing his anime. He just starts drawing and expects his team to trust that he will a story soon enough.

Every time Miyazaki talks about anything other than his work, he embarrasses himself, wilfully ignorant and totally wrong.

He makes a good film now and again but what an absolutely moronic take on LoTR. He couldn't read it and separate himself and humanity from the work. There are just some things that are evil and are diametrically opposed to good. Look at any of his movies, there is always some good in the villains of his movies which is what redeems them later in the film but dear god orcs are written to be creatures of hate and malice with no redeeming qualities. But if it were up to Miyazaki the orcs would realize what they were doing and turn over a new leaf.

Miyazaki is demented if he really thinks things would've been better had the Japanese not surrendered to the US. Best case scenario, they would've cut a negotiated surrender that would've left them a theocratic military dictatorship. Worst case, they would've been the Japanese Soviet Socialist Republic. Neither country would've welcomed anything like Studio Ghibli. He would've been lucky to get to make propaganda films and to avoid either committing suicide or "committing suicide".

Besides, this doesn't even make sense. The orcs shown in the LotR trilogy are always very obviously mobilised military forces, because as monstrous as the orcs are, at least thry don't mix their own civilians up with their military forces like they're fucking HAMAS. And Peter Jackson isn't an American. Neither is Tolkien. Not that squints can tell we godless roundeyes apart.

      >because as monstrous as the orcs are, at least thry don't mix their own civilians up with their military forces like they're fucking HAMAS
There are no civilian orcs. Every single one is a military aged male and a legitimate target in combat. That's his point. That is how Americans view enemy countries. That was the US' defense when they blew up 40 people at a wedding - it was a gathering with a bunch of combat aged men so it must have been a terror cell.

The Orcs assuredly have civilian populations. It's just Tolkien never wrote about them because he found the topic too depressing to dig into. Though he confilmed for a fact that civian orc encampments and orc women -- whom he specified stayed at hom, and didn't fight in armies -- exist all the same:

        https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Letter_to_Mrs_Munby

The Wech Baghtu wedding party airstrike almost assuredly happened because our "dear friends" in Pakistani intelligence gave the Obama administration faulty information in an attempt to sabotage Coalition efforts in turning Afghanistan into a viable independent state. Obama being stupid enough to believe the Pakis was, sadly, typical, as fucking every US president since the Partition seems incapable of accepting that Pakistan is an Islamic republic run by terrorists who hate us and who have no interest in responsible governance. And evil abd stupid as it is for us to trust the Pakis, there's still a difference between killing civilians by accident, which is inevitable during warfare, and targeting them on purpose, like the Pakis, the Ruskies, the Chinks, the Imperial Japs, and the IRGC do.

It is in the books and movies. Bolg of the North is the son of Azog the Defiler. This is explicit in both the books and movies. How else do you think Azog made Bolg? Pathenogenesis?

The orcs reproduced. There were orc women. They just stayed in orc civilian encampments abd didn't go off to war. Hence why we didn't see them, because that wasn't what the story was about, and only a socialist could be fool enough to pretend every stiry should be about every thing.

I was talking about the Mukaradeeb wedding party massacre. It's hard to keep the US' wedding party massacres straight, I know. Wikipedia even has a disambiguation page for them. But at least we don't intentionally target them!

If it's unintentiona, it's by definition not targeting them. You seem to be misinformed in thinking I was trying to "make up an excuse" for me personally not having made something as "large and well-renowned" as that, when my argument was that I have read piece of shit dollar-store novels that are more complex and well made than Princess Mononoke.

But of course a low IQ goy-cattle misinterprets my argument. Your kind are incapable of critical thinking or reading comprehension.

Your fetishism over anime is more racist than me calling Princess Mononoke trash, and you creating the presumed strawman of me hating all anime out of nowhere is also a coping fallacy.

Miyazaki telling the truth about otaku has nothing to do with being a right wing. You have to post better rebuttals than this. Yes i'm glad you appreciate how accurately i portrayed your stupid argument about hating princess mononoke because you read a critique in a blog that was specifically geared for retards like you who hate weebs. It makes you feel better than them doesn't it? I did not misread anything, you clearly posted that you think i like mononoke because i am a weeb which i called you out for making the same mistake about hating it because you are a right wing retard who thinks anime is weeb shit. You made the same mistake you accuse me of. You have zero objectivity to talk about anime. And even less criical thinking skills because you automatically assume i am a weeb. Keep posting lard ass, maybe the extra exercise will shed you some fat.

            >On 15 January 1945, the U.S. Army Service Forces released a document, "Redeployment of the United States Army after the Defeat of Germany." In it, they estimate that during the 18 month period after June 1945 (that is, through December 1946), the Army would be required to furnish replacements for 43,000 dead and evacuated wounded every month.[86] From analysis of the replacement schedule and projected strengths in overseas theaters, it suggested that Army losses alone in those categories, excluding the Navy and Marine Corps, would be approximately 863,000 through the first part of 1947, of whom 267,000 would be killed or missing.[87] This likewise excludes wounded who would be treated in-theater during an initial window of 30 days, later to be expanded to 120 days.
Yes of course the military not only wanted to lose 250,000 to 1,000,000+ KIA needlessly, but wanted the Soviets to kill steal and make Japan communist despite doing 5% of the work. Idiot.

NTA, but those quotes mean nothing in the context of what we know for a fact, and Eisenhower was notoriously a fucking retard, who is often called one of the worst presidents.

Those "commanders" are all just virtue-signaling for the press, as they wanted to further their political careers. Historical reality was very much a different story.

                >Eisenhower was notoriously a fucking retard, who is often called one of the worst presidents.
A bit too harsh, he was at best a meh president but an excellent administrator.
He was a tard wrangler during the war. Given the prima donnas (Patton, Montgomery "I'll draw tanks in the dirt for an hour when courting a girl, I am literally that autistic" Montgomery, de Gaulle, etc.) And he was good at it.
And as president he kept Greece free, expanded social security, and made the US highway system. I was under the impression he was decent, I am hardly a fanboi but I have never seen him in below-average tier. It's a low bar I know.

                >Uhh the military leaders are wrong because we know they're factually wrong
                Compelling argument.

NTA but Eisenhower was SACEUR. EUR = Europe

Well I don't really have to say why this isn't relevant to the Pacific War do I?

                >The Japanese, he noted, had "put out a lot of peace feelers through Russia long before" the bomb was used.
This is your best one, and its still patently dishonest. Do you know WHY we did not accept """feelers"""? The Japanese would not remove the emperor (who was the head of the military government) as the head of the government. Imagine starting a war, then saying "yeah we'll have peace but we won't change anything, not even leaders", tantamount to saying "TIME OUT while we re-arm and re-group." Basically ensuring a re-match in 10-20 years, perhaps this time with a much more resilient enemy. A war which, again, they started.
Do you know why this is worthless or do I have to explain it to you.

/k/ will be happy to explain to you why MacArthur was a retard who ruined everything he touched, was despised by everyone who had to work with him, and finally ran out of sand for his hourglass in Korea.

                >brainwashed
Nah, you're just an anti-American bitch who can't see that we did what we had to do to win the war. And it worked, simple as.

He's probably going to try and use the debunked theory that the US dropped bombs on Japan in order to scare them into surrendering sooner before the Soviets got to them, when only a couple generals suggested possibly surrendering to the Soviets, while the rest of them, including the Emperor, said surrender was not an option.

To me, he’s just espousing the same perspective anyone has about Americans when they are completely ignorant of anything about it other than the wars they wage and the dead toll as shown in the news. I’m basing this off on the fact that people in Quebec have pretty much the same view. They don’t go as far as hating on LOTR tho, so I agree that he’s mostly seething about the nukes. Thing is, who’s people are more important? Yours, or the ennemies’?

Clearly deeply butthurt because the glorious Japanese empire was absolutely FUCKED UP in ww2. The people of nanking would have praised an atom bomb in comparison to the hell the japanese spread upon them. Japanese people watch American movies, and Americans watch anime. The fun aspects from different cultures can be borrowed and combined and new cultures form. As long as you avoid a globalised culture that is just fun and insightful.

meming aside, in Goldeneye, I was pretty disturbed by Bond casually gunning down endless amounts of innocent russian conscripts and guards without the slightest regret, hesitation or even real acknowledgement that they were also people. It wasn't even wartime. He just showed up and started killing people. They were just obstacles in his way, and their wellbeing didn't matter to him at all.

I was going to call you out for being wrong but I realized something as I was writing: didnt they have to fake Sean Bean's death? So EVERY soldier in that scene with the barrels (at the very least) would have to know in advance he was going to be "captured" while 007 was planting the explosives and "executed", by the Russian general right?
          >be conscriptovich
          >go to shift shift at high-security facility
          >all hands meeting by top ranking officer of facility
          >"Today we will be doing something... unusual comrades"
          >"Two British agents will infiltrate this facility. Luckily one of the agents is in our employ and thus have been forewarned."
          >conscriptovich: wtf?!
          >"to protect his cover, it is imperative that I fake his execution, he looks like this so let him live"
          >shows us all a picture of some English guy
          >want to ask why we are doing this chicanery in the room filled with thousands of explosive barrels
          >don't say anything because don't want to get raped by General Ourumov
          >whats the worst that can happen?

...which means that to keep a secret most of those soldiers HAD to die, so that no one would blab. Which means that the facility blowing up was throwing them to the wolves via a very capable British agent. Which was planned, from the guy on the toilet to the airplane pilot in the escape scene.
          Or am I missing something?

Bond is a trained killer, it's a lot more shocking when Indiana Jones does it. He's just an archaeologist but he's killed well over 100 people, some of them weren't necessarily bad like those trying to defend the Grail, but he always has a smile and never once expresses any remorse.

Also in Temple of Doom, his long-time friend and partner of Asian descent is killed in the opening scene. His last words show that they were close. Indy never grieves for one moment and the man is instantly replaced by Short Round, a child version of that person who is perhaps Indy's closest friend in the whole series, but would Indy grieve for one second if Shorty got killed? It seems that he wouldn't.
