HBO Max is dead

>Hollywood is abuzz with speculation approaching Warner Bros. Discovery’s first quarterly earnings since becoming the nation’s No. 2 entertainment giant on Thursday. Multiple insiders told TheWrap they expect Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav to announce a major restructuring of marquee streaming platforms HBO Max and Discovery+ during its results or soon after.

>The move will result in a gutting of HBO Max, significant layoffs for its executives and staff to minimize redundancies with HBO and a combined streaming service with Discovery+ with a harder line separation between the scripted and unscripted content operations.

>“Everyone in Warner Bros. Discovery is nervous at the moment, and [they’re] starting to look at alternative job options in case they get the axe,” a company insider said. “Sounds like they’re not doing HBO Max scripted shows anymore with HBO taking over, so less scripted shows overall.”

>HBO Max development is expected to be especially hard hit with layoffs with two sources placing the amount of dev staff cuts at 70%. “HBO Max has a development team, which is a lot of overhead,” the agent with knowledge explained. “And why do you need a development team at HBO and HBO Max? It’s redundant. Just have Casey Bloys’ team do all the scripted TV development.”

I genuinely at lost here Max is doing far better than Netflix and Disney Plus, is it because of Nolan they're doing this? He said putting movies into streaming before theaters would drive off big name directors from WB which is why he left

HBO Max is wholly owned by WB so Discovery can't make money off of it. This NEW Discover+HBO service will be owned by WBD so Zaslav makes some bank from his hit shows Selina + Chef and Pose

WB has been in debt for a while because of AT&T merger shenanigans. HBOMax did good, but they needed to merge again to take on the debt and the new suits are stripmining WB for short term profit. Story as old as time.

The actual numbers were obviously really bad, as in bleeding money.

D+ is bleeding money as well, same with Amazon Prime, but those companies have alternate revenue streams and can lose money (Amazon practically endlessly), WB+Discovery and Netflix don't, so they will start cutting fat, A LOT.

Over here they gave everyone a "lifetime" deal of HBO Max only being like 4 bucks a month. Shutting HBO Max down and starting up another identical service would get rid of all those "freeloader" subscriptions.

This. Rick and Morty, Game of Thrones spinoffs, Succession, Westworld, Teen Titans Go, Gumball, Euphoria, and Smiling Friends are probably safe due to their streaming and cable numbers.

Universal is doing pretty good and paramount made a major comeback with hit after hit at the box office scene(not just top gun 2)

Universal is legitimately having a good year. Jurassic World Dominion and Minions: The Rise of Gru did really well.

Paramount on the other hand is having a banger of a year. Paramount+ is one of the higher streaming services now and Top Gun and Yellowstone are cultural phenomenons. Sonic the Hedgehog, South Park, and SpongeBob also did numbers.

                >on the other hand is having a banger of a year. Paramount+ is one of the higher streaming services now and Top Gun and Yellowstone are cultural phenomenons. Sonic the Hedgehog, South Park, and SpongeBob also did numbers.
Yellowstone is a breakout hit - especially since it moves the middle in ways that Euphoria does not, even though Euphoria is more popular on twitter/tiktok etc. People actually pay to see Yellowstone. But otherwise, you are full of shit. Paramount+ consistently performs worse than Peawiener and shit like Cruncyroll has a higher number of subscribers user. HBO Max has more revenue after expenses than even Disney+, even if Disney+ has more subscribers (although both Netflix and Hulu can claim more revenue than HBO Max).

Theatrically, yes, you are correct so far for 2022, Universal and Paramount both have larger shares (23%/22%) than either Disney/Buena Vista or WB (17%/13%): https://www.the-numbers.com/market/2022/summary
BUT Paramount barely has less than a handful of movies left to release this year, whereas WB will easily add another 5-10% to that, whereas Paramount won't.

I would've liked to see Young Justice get another season or two to see where exactly weisman wanted to take that story if anywhere specific at all, but the only real loss would be not getting a Venture Bros movie. That said, I think a lot of people are talking like the sky is falling and everything in production even tangentially related to WB/HBOM/DC/whatever else is canned, and those people probably need to take a step out side for some fresh air anyway

I didn't mean seeing where it ends, I'm kind of fine with capeshit being open ended as it's a natural part of that genre with how it all recycles or resets anyway. I just mean I wanted to see how far he'd take the world building/how many new characters he could clutter the screen with/etc. After the two seasons on the DC app, finally being an HBO branded cartoon seemed to be getting it a lot more attention and momentum publicly. It's not even close to one of my favorite shows but I still think YJ is going to surprise everyone and survive this culling

he was talking about season 7 and beyond. the show wasn't going anywhere

If Discovery starts axing more cartoons after the merger, then I think it's pretty much the beginning of the end. I'm not even doomposting - animation is expensive, and it's obvious that the target audience of 98% of cartoons (children, tweens, and teens) would rather watch a streamer that reacts to fricking YouTube videos all day.

At least on streaming platforms, there was a pocket for cartoons. But after Netflix starting slashing animation projects left and right, and now this whole bullshit with the HBO + Discovery merger, it's looking pretty damn dire for the medium as a whole - at least in the western world.

Everything animated that is aimed at teens or adults is in danger.

Pretty much everything that you think Zaslav wants to do with this Warner Discovery + is essentially done by youtube. If you want some crazy documentary and reality tv shows or some cheaply animated kids cartoons, you can get all that on youtube for free and in better quality than the discovery channels programming. And if you want high budget reality tv that cant be done by youtube, Netflix is already cornering that market really well.

They're not. They killed it all trying to get a piece of the pie when they saw how well Netflix was doing in the mid 2010s. This is the aftermath. They didn't realise that the appeal of Netflix and Hulu was all those shows in one place for just one subscription that was less than $20. When they split off, it was all over for the streaming business. People don't wanna pay $10 - $20 for multiple services, just to see one show and then another 15 filler shows. Then those streaming services spend a ton of money filming new projects so that they have constant new content every month so your subscribers stay, which gets more and more difficult when you're niche.

Yeah. Livestreaming services like Youtube and Twitch and TikTok is the future. Very similar to TV in that its free to watch content with ads. Except the users supply the content for them. Mostly in an attempt to get famous.

Nobodys gonna run back to Netflix. Its paid content with ads. Companies are trying to salvage their failed streaming services by merging them because they've realised their brand isn't strong enough and the amount of content they have to create under that niche is too much.

Its funny as this has now happened to DC Twice. DC honestly fricking thought it could have had its own network full of strong content that it'd be profitable with the amount of subscribers. They honestly though Titans, Harley Quinn and Doom Patrol was a strong enough streaming service seller. Then that got merged with HBO, and now its getting merged with Discovery.

Every Titans season so far has been on a new network.

Anon it’s been exactly 17 years since YouTube launched and has been running in the red for Google. I think you’re right in regards to the splintering effect killing off Netflix style streaming services like this, but we’ve been told that the future would be user generated content for a while now, and turns out too much of it relies on scripted content to be even taken an interest on.

WB in particular seems to be cursed with getting shitty mergers, they’re taking on this Discovery merger because of debt AT&T left them from their failed tenure.

Youtube, Twitch and TikTok won't kill Netflix, Disney, WB and other old school media companies but they are pushing the old media landscape to merge into more mega conglomerates or be acquired by even bigger tech mega conglomerates. There isn't a need for like 7-10 streaming services offering the same type of scripted entertainment when so much of our attention is now divided by Social media (Youtube, TikTok, Instragram, Twitch), Video games or really any other form of activities. Reed Hastings even said that the biggest competition to Netflix is Youtube, Fortnite and gaming as a whole. But there is still demand for scripted content (especially animation) that required large funds to produce that would be hard or nigh impossible to do on patreon, ad sense or through any other means of revenue generating in these social media landscapes.

Yeah but since stuff aired at a specific time, instead of on demand, the filler content was usually just shit they aired during dead hours like at 1am. And also because it was just one show at a time, not whatever the viewer wants to see whenever they want, they could air reruns of old shows just to fill time. Now they can't with streaming services. Because that old content is on demand at any time. Part of a lot of streaming service's advertising pitch is "You get access to our ENTIRE library of work!" except this means they now need constant new content.

Soon they'll realize and crawl back to Netflix and Prime Video (I have no idea what will become of Hulu)

And the minute they do, most of Netflix's problems will magically disappear because now they can fall back on establish pop culture again. And all these hackjob mergers made specifically to bulk up streaming libraries will come apart at the seems.

Disney's gonna buy the rest of Hulu in 2024 and roll the content into Disney+.

          Capitalism is evil

Only loss there is Close Enough.

They do. And the more niche you get, the harder it is to think of constant, original, new ideas every month to keep subscribers because these streaming services quickly found out people weren't willing to pay for just one or two major shows. They want lots of content if they're gonna be spending $10 - $20, especially since now instead of just subscribing to Netflix and getting all that content at your whim for $15, they have to sign up to 5 - 10 things to get the same amount of major content. Its how we're only in year 2 of Disney+ and we're already at bottom of the barrel literal who's like the Agatha Harkness Show and Echo. Because they need that string of content. Which is vastly easier to do when you're not tied by a company, or a channel around a specific niche, but a large independent channel like Netflix. Its why early Netflix worked.

Its also why Sony's eating well. They went the opposite route. No streaming services, lets just make these other desperate for content to keep subscribers streaming services pay to put our content on their service.

I bet Disney's eyeing Sony's American entertainment division. Warner and Universal are both major players in the music industry yet Disney doesn't.

They're not the big three. The big three that dominates over 80% of the market are Universal, Warner Bros., and Sony. I think they usually release under Universal as well, so in the music industry they're kind of Universal's b***h.

The only possible explanation is that the Discovery execs want THEIR brand to be the most important because it'll make them look good. Execs often make financially dumb decisions for the company if they believe it benefits them personally.

Calling the service Discovery anything is like repellent. Most viewers are adverse to nonfiction, educational programming. SpongeBob knew back in 2001- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOqEbqDKU00

              It is more profitable apparently.

Has Discovery even released a major feature film? They're profitable because they're just filming nature, a single person, or loony attention prostitutes for free.

Based trips, and I mean it’s fairly obvious why. These services are designed to generate content first. Pirates just nab and preserve it for circulation. Especially since no physical media is involved, it’s all a matter of who has it available and how fast can I get it. People only played nice with streaming services initially because the cost was low and the money directly went into acquiring/making more content. Now that it all split off into niches asking you cash and using original content as a carrot to entice rather than actual commitments, no one cares anymore.

The Netflix near-monopoly was good because they offered a good product at a good cost. I don’t give a shit about “much competitive market” as long as the product is good, I’ll pay for it and now it’s not thanks to this so called “competition” all failing in their own ways.

            Anonymous

What was ironic is the media companies whining about muh competitive market and Netflix monopolizing streaming were all big monopolies like Disney and Warner and the like.

            Anonymous

yeah this is the one time where having competetion failed everyone and keeping the status quo of semi monopoly netflix was better. even if netflix continues to be shit and push out turds you had the classics and other shows to lean on and honestly less turds would need to be pinched from netflix's ass because theyd have their catalogue back.

You know damn well this is they real reason they started weekly episodes. not for "consumer water cooler talk" but to pad out their barren platform

Real talk there's no stupider move than going into Entertainment as a career. Everybody makes for for free now. One out of 300 Million of those people will hit the lottery and earn an honest living from it.

Not even kidding we've reached the point where being a server at a restaurant as your job-job not day job is a billion times more potentially lucrative and realistic.

You are basically fricked unless you're from wealthy Hollywood royalty and therefore will never have to work a day, anyway.

If you don't want to die homeless never think of it as anything but an expensive hobby like traveling to islands because that's exactly what it is, a hobby YOU pay for with your OWN money in your own free time, might as way say you do "yachting for fun" for a "living."

As bad as it is now more and more tech companies more and more will make money from customer's content they make for free, computer engineers will be the only people making any money, though.

so what is a real job?

        Anonymous

        Decent Tier:
        Engineer
        DOCTOR
        >power gap
        >power gap
        >power gap
Can Be OK, Do Your Research Tier:
        Other Medical Jobs like:
        anesthesiologist
        Physician's Assistant
        dentist
        some kinds of Nurse
        some programming/IT jobs

it's a global economy, basically if you would ask a nobody from India what they'd work to become to be able to eat food and live under a roof, do that. Otherwise you might be fricked.

Everything else gets into "depends" territory. Are you connected, extremely extroverted, physically attractive, young, nepotism hire, charismatic? Some kinds of Accountant, depending on the market of that very moment. Have an Engineering degree from M.I.T. AND a Law Degree from Harvard? niche lawyer, but Law is a disaster field without the right Top School, connections, and/or niche background.

Basically stick to STEM but mostly the E and M and some small T.

Other things: do a ton of research, top schools, connections, you might be okay. Anything fricking CREATIVE, ENTERTAINMENT, fricking liberal arts, basically any stupid shit about getting "fans" and "famous": You had better have a few million dollars in savings. People PAY millions of their own money or their own family's money to get that now, not the other way around. Or else four generations in the business and again you family gives you 200 mil for your first movie and you might still fricking fail. I'm serious, don't do it. At that point settling into McDonalds unironically makes much more sense unless you don't mind dying on the streets at 22 years old.

Basically as long as the schools are pretty good and accredited and recognized, being a doctor or an engineer, you can get a house and start a family. Depending on the specifics (neurosurgeon from top med school = / = civil engineer from an okay state school) it might not be incredible but livable. Almost anything less than that depends. That's why you'll notice immigrants from the 3rd world always have those careers, they are tickets and always needed. Outside of that personal connections, elite brand name schools, physical appearance and magnetism start being needed to an extent, and or some luck and having the specific needed skills at the right time. Sure people outside do get rich, of course, but look closer and luck and/or those intangibles (family connections, bringing wealth to it, personality, really are one of the most accomplished people in your field in the world) play a role.

Long story short though don't do fricking entertainment. Like you could win a billion dollars in the lottery sure you could, you almost definitely will not. Beware of survivorship bias and or people with families who could support them indefinitely in the "successful" people you talk to, if they went to a top school like Cal Arts and lived with their grandparents for free while they made their cartoon pilot, ask yourself if you're going to CalArts and if you can live with your family for free for decades while they support you and maybe fail anyway. Ask yourself if you have all the industry connections that they do.

Then just be ready to have to default to something like food service and live with roomates in an apartment for life or you're fine, or else have a fricking back up plan where you don't have to do that. With no prospects dating will be tough. If you're okay with that it's okay but start saving for retirement NOW since no one will help you and you're relying on your body being in good shape to do menial physical labor unless again you make a back up plan which you can and should do. For some entertainment and Hollywood "jobs" the rate of people even making a shitty ass living is like 0.0001% that's why the fricking phrase "day job" is so well known an omnipresent, again if you don't mind being a waiter for life it's okay just think about your finances and what happens when you get old.

Not exactly, the problem is that when anime became mainstream in the USA, something caused on youths that made them lean into the extreme left and trying to look like anime characters or something like that.

Plus do cartoons or animations in a quasi bastardized anime style. Like Steven Universe.

I'm not sure what left-right has to do with this, there are plenty of people from all over the spectrum who prefer anime over cartoons, outside of literal white supremacists who hate anime purely because it's not made by white people.

But at this point they should just let it end, it's been 7 years since the last game and Arkham Knight was nothing special by 2015 outside of the graphics.

Wall Street wants media companies to have "scale", thinking bigger is always better and big media companies have large content libraries due to them being in business for decades of not over a century( the studios). But it seems that instead of scale and being larger, these companies need to be nimble to upcoming changes and have a competent team of executives and CEOs who know the inside and out of the company and address their weaknesses and strengthen the things they're good at.

Bigger doesn't mean better and putting yourself in 55 billion dollars worth of debt is an absolute dumbass move, if you don’t have a cohesive plan.

Also, this whole streaming wars bullshit is Wall Street pushing media companies into making asinine financial decisions to a bunch of banks to make further money.

I don't know if I've seen this answered, but what in God's name did they do to fall into 55 BILLION DOLLARS in debt? Have bonfires using $100 bills?

Who AT&T? They bought media empires and cable companies at primo prices on debt. They went further in debt to buy up 5G wavelength in markets across the country. When they auctioned off 5G, it raised something like 80 billion dollars. (T-Mobile/Sprint got the lion's share).

It's ups and downs, man. Ups and downs. I love comics and I love DC characters, but they've shit up the mainline by making it basically appeal to kids (despite making kids/ya graphic novels) and tackling actual issues with only extreme leftist ideas. Plus, they've over saturated their line with nothing but Batman for far too long.

As someone who's actually been fine with DC's direction since Didio left, there's a lot of Cinemaphile that would just want to nuke them and have them reboot yet again.

I would. I'd nuke the whole line, take a 5 month hiatus, have an awesome event that reestablishes everyone in a modern timeline with updates to careers, make meaningful changes, and go back to telling adult stories that don't involve pronouns or other stupid shit.

Friendly reminder that Toys R Us didn't just naturally crumble. It was preyed upon by corporate pirates that bought it, siphoned off anything of worth while claiming that it wasn't doing well, taking loans with companies that'd provide kickbacks to them and making the money disappear before calling for bankruptcy so that the government would have to step in and pay those loans while also doing tax dodging bullshit, giving them a bigger and faster payday than if they'd just sold a functioning toy company or kept it running.

AT&T saddled WB with debt, some of it AT&T debts. That said, AT&T was responsible for some good things, such as getting rid of the old silos, which is why CN could shank WB or WB Animation and DC over what should have been shared corporate goals/ambitions like GL-TAS or JLA, as far as we're discussing animation here today.

Zaslav is exactly the kind of moronic exec that pisses both sides of the culture war off, so I can believe it

Yeah but he doesn't give a shit he's like Bobby Kotick but clean

discovery does more than shitty “documentaries”, they made TONS of money from reality TV shows like Toddlers and Tiaras, Duck Dynasty, etc
ie shit that costs basically nothing to make

The CEO is figuring he can make money from writing off movies/shows and dumping scripted shit
100% he’s going to increase the amount of reality tv shows in the hbomax and discovery+ merger
Also 100% discovery being the “main brand” is his ego, as HBOmax has 3x the subscribers as discovery+ AND has the highest user satisfaction rating (with discovery being only above peawiener)

          https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/discovery-warnermedia-merger-approvbed-investor-vote-1235201881/

Only because Discovery is the acquiring corporation and AT&T gutted Warner Brothers/WarnerMedia due to their inept leadership. AT&T didn't want in the business and Discovery purchased some of AT&T's debt to do it. Which is why WBD has around 55 billion dollars in debt. They're already trying to cut 3 billion dollars in debt, which is why so much content and shows/movies/properties are being cut,, and it's only going to continue to get worse.

Yes Duggars shit was on TLC that started in 2008.

TLC also had Little People, Big World.
          >In 2020, Jacob Roloff claimed that he was groomed and molested by former producer Chris Cardamone during the production of the series between 2007 and 2010, when Roloff was between the ages of 10 and 13 years old.[21] While Roloff did not divulge details of the abuse, he emphasized that "all fault lies with the predator" and that "no fault lies with any of my family members." TLC responded to the allegations by saying "We are saddened and troubled by this very serious allegation, and TLC will work cooperatively with the authorities. Our main focus remains on supporting the Roloff family during this very difficult time.”[22]

Toddlers and Tiaras started in 2009.

TLC also had a show about the Willis Family in 2015 and 2016.
          >Toby Willis was arrested in Kentucky on September 9, 2016 after fleeing there to avoid arrest on a child rape that occurred in Nashville back in 2004.[6]
          >On July 11, 2017, Willis pleaded guilty to four counts of child rape. Cheatham County Circuit Court Clerk Julie Hibbs confirmed that Willis received two 25-year sentences on two counts and two 40-year sentences on the other two. Those sentences will be concurrent, and served at 100 percent, giving Willis a total of 40 years in prison.[7]
he raped his daughters and abused his whole family btw

Mind you, Zaslav became president of Discovery in 2006.

Since American animation is dying harder with each and every passing day, I thought it would be a good idea to give out anime recs from this season:

    >Yofukashi no Uta (Call of the Night)
    > Kou Yamori is an average middle school student who struggles with grasping the complex concept of love. Because he sees little sense in surrendering to the norm, he soon stops going to school. Plagued with insomnia due to his idleness, Kou begins roaming the lonesome streets at night.

One night, Kou encounters a bizarre girl named Nazuna Nanakusa who believes that people stay awake during the night because they are dissatisfied with how they spent their day and cannot rest until they release their inhibitions. Nazuna offers to help Kou with his sleep issues and invites him over to her place, where she convinces him to share a futon with her. Feeling uncomfortable, Kou only pretends to doze off—which is when Nazuna suddenly bites his neck and reveals herself to be a vampire!

While Kou thinks the bite will turn him into a vampire, the specifics of transforming are not that simple. In order to change, he must be bitten by someone he truly loves. Ready to let go of his dreary mortal life, Kou decides on a new goal: he will fall in love with Nazuna and become a vampire.
