I have a few questions about iron lung life:

what happens to shit and piss?
do you ever get to jerk off?
do your arms and legs work?
what happens if you have an itch on your nose or have a troublesome booger that requires fingers to remove?

it's not some highly constricting skin-tight apparatus. it's just a hollow tube that changes the air pressure regularly.

surely it would be easier to attach a pump to the actual lungs?

It is. That's why the only people left in iron lungs are the people who grew up in one.

Can they not just switch over to the modern solution?

You either have to have a pipe jammed down your throat or literally cut into the front of your neck.

      >what happens to shit and piss?
He did it in a bedpan or went to the toilet. He could walk and leave the tube, but he had to breathe manually using his neck muscles
      >do you ever get to jerk off?
Yeah why not. You can move your arms and legs freely in the iron lung
      >do your arms and legs work?
      As above
      >what happens if you have an itch on your nose or have a troublesome booger that requires fingers to remove?
Ask the nurse to do it. Until then you just have to deal with the annoyance.
The only reason why he spent his life in an iron lung is because he liked it better than the other forms of mechanical ventilation. It works by using pressure to force your chest to rise and fall, instead of forcing air in and out, so it's more like regular breathing.

how bad are the other forms of ventilation that laying down inside a fricking MRI machine 90% of the time was preferable

Iron lungs were a meme. Only a few people were ever dumb enough to live in one.

I think the facial itches would be the worst part. Why does he simply not have some kind of device that is head/mouth operated that helps him scratch himself?

Thanks. I must have confused him with somebody.
any rate, he left the tube sometimes but it seems like he had a wheelchair and helper. Still, the idea of having to manually breathe all the time is horrible.

how is decreasing pressure on the whole body easier or simpler than just pushing air in?

Forcing air into your lungs fricks them up.

everyone should read this book. polio is the first example everyone jumps to when they talk about vaccination, and yet vaccines had nothing to do with its eradication.

      >yet vaccines had nothing to do with its eradication
This, it had more to do with just not drinking the same water you shat in. The polio vaccine was mostly distributed to dirt countries in Africa and Asia that didn't quite master that basic art yet.
