Some boomer actors just give up, or decide to campmit.up because they know they've become a meme. He's decent in early stuff like King of the Gypsys and great in Star 80 (just like Treat Williams is incredible in Prince of the City.)
Yeah, it was a small role relative to the length of the film but I thought he was still pretty good in it. I'll definitely check out Prince of the City. I always hear good things about Sidney Lumet movies but I've actually only ever seen 12 Angry Men. So I've got quite a few movies to check out.
So many of his films are kind of similar, a lot of them are just like long ass Law & Order episodes. Even Prince of the City treads the same territory as the more famous Serpico, but it really distills all the best qualities of his sprawling New York, well, law and order films like Serpico all the way up to Q&A or City Hall (which are all decent films in their own way.) Another good one is The Verdict.
>Even Prince of the City treads the same territory as the more famous Serpico
Because it is also based on events that happened following Serpico, the investigation they're worried about is the investigation he kickstarted
And it is directed by the same guy, Sidney Lumet
He actually did a third film about NYPD corruption, creating a loose sort of trilogy, Q&A in 1990
It has a really unhinged Nick Nolte performance
i had the pleasure of working with Treat for two years. we were both (as a lot of us where in this project) away from family for a long time, and we often talked about how forming meaningful relationships at work was a great way to fill that void, so to speak. he had amazing stories, he was so funny, so professional, so passionate. he would often want to talk to the writers about his dialogue/direction and for whatever reason he would confide in me before doing so, maybe for affirmation, but it was always fun to see how his vision impacted the next revision of the script. he definitely held the cast and crew to a very high standard, but he definitely loved having a good time as well. he was an amazing performer, so passionate about his characters. and he loved his family so much. we had some genuinely hilarious moments, we had some genuine tense moments, we had some genuinely kind/caring moments and at the end of the day, i am a better professional having worked with him.
Treat in those days was a sort of upper class pet name that most people would've recognised as such: >Williams was born in Stamford, Connecticut on December 1, 1951, the son of Marian (née Andrew), an antiques dealer, and Richard Norman Williams, a corporate executive. He moved with his family to Rowayton, Connecticut, when he was three. His maternal great-great-great-grandfather was William Henry Barnum, a U.S. senator from Connecticut and third cousin of the showman P. T. Barnum. Williams was a distant relative of both Robert Treat Paine—a signatory to the Declaration of Independence—and Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States
The funny thing is, he got , in his prime, even Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. At some point, he just seemed to have gone into a conslusion, he would never be as good as his sister is, so he started doing quantity instead.
I guess he needed money or wasn't getting better offers and didn't want to sit around waiting
first he did b-movies, then corman movies, then straight to video, now its this junk
its a sort of downward spiral or self fulfilling prophecy thing because when you begin to do these films you're no longer thought of as an actor of higher tier work and only get offers for more of the same
he's surprisingly good in a lot of low-budget trash
if, for whatever reason, you are possessed of a desire to watch The Glass Cage (1996), you'll see him turn in a performance that's way, way too good for everyone and everything else involved in the movie
During the meeting of the mob bosses in The Dark Knight he has like one line, and yet he's the most convincing of the aforementioned bosses, all of whom otherwise seem comical, no pun intended. Ching Chong is an SNL parody of Jackie Chan, Gambol has a small penis, and the Eastern-European has by far the worst accent in cinema history.
Eric Roberts is the only compelling actor in that scene, apart from Ledger. Not that I'm blaming any of the other actors, they seem like good guys, Nolan is just a shit director. But Eric transcends shit direction. He doesn't even need a director. I don't even know if Nolan knew he was cast or that he was even in the movie. He probably shot his own scenes on the production's off days, and then the editor just went with it.
I keep forgetting Eric Roberts was actually in a Nolan movie. That was long after he fell to doing B-movies, who was looking to include Eric Roberts in a blockbuster?
Jesus Fricking Christ, that was hard to watch. I genuinely do not get the obsession with Michael Caine. The dude couldn't act his way out of a cardboard box. On a semi-related note; Alfred is the main antagonist of the Nolan trilogy.
>instead of asking “is there anything he won’t do” I want people to ask “ is there anything he CAN’T do”
-Eric roberts on asked why he does so many movies every year
He’s a decent actor and enjoys the work. He should do a film with Nic Cage
>“I feel that I’ve, at this point – after 45 years of doing this; that in over 100 movies – I feel I’ve pretty much said what I’ve had to say with cinema. And I’d like to leave on a high note and say, ‘Adios,'” Cage said. “I think I have to do maybe three or four more movies before I can get there, and then hopefully switch formats and go into some other way of expressing my acting.”
He better get on it soon, looks like there won't be many more chances.
Luckily he elaborated on that and I only quoted part of the article. Here you go: >“I would’ve liked to have left on a high note, like ‘Dream Scenario.’ But I have other contracts that I have to fulfill, so we’ll see what happens,” he continued. “I am going to be very severe and very astringent on the selection process moving forward. But for me to do another movie, I do want to explore other formats.”
>Cage said he is “very interested in immersion streaming with episodic television,” adding, “I have seen things that can be done now with characters and the time they’re given to express themselves. I saw Bryan Cranston stare at a suitcase for an hour on one episode of ‘Breaking Bad.’ We don’t have time to do that in a feature film, so maybe television is the next best step for me. We’ll see.”
>“I’m going to be 60 next month and my dad died at 75. So it’s like, if I’m lucky, I have more years than he did, but I don’t know,” Cage said. “And so what am I going to do with my next 15 years? Well, what’s important? What’s important is my children and I have a baby daughter. And if I can find an episodic show to do that stays in one place where I don’t have to keep leaving, we can all be together. That, on a personal level, would be great. But also I’m a student and I don’t know if I have anything else to learn in cinema. I might have something to learn in television.”
"Then find an old writer that hasn't written anything in decades. Maybe we can make it work with someone who isn't infected with current year-"
"He's already been cancelled, sir."
"Then hire a woman-"
"Cancelled for being born female, sir, and not habing to work for becoming one."

"We're being sued for cultural appropriation and using the B word, sir."
"How about ChatGPT?"
"Sir, the internet doesn't work anymore, something about an autism tantrum explosion about the use of A.I. software in entertainment?"

Man all this time I've had both Adblock Plus and Ublock Origin installed against people's recommendations because I figured, if it gets through one, it won't get through the other, and so far it has served me well. But this shit with YouTube really got on my nerves so I finally disabled ABP and I cannot believe how much better everything is running, not just YouTube. I have been a fool for all these years.
He's good enough and that's what matters.
He listened, which no one else did.
this
this is his best job:
Some boomer actors just give up, or decide to campmit.up because they know they've become a meme. He's decent in early stuff like King of the Gypsys and great in Star 80 (just like Treat Williams is incredible in Prince of the City.)
I hadn't heard of Treat Williams until just the other day, I watched Once Upon a Time in America and that was a good movie and he was in it.
If you liked that film and what you saw of him I think you'd like Prince of the City.

He made a LOT of shit, anon.
Fail Safe, Dog Day, Network,Before the Devil Knows You're Dead should cover it. Maybe Anderson Tapes.
Treat Williams was groomed to be a star, but he just couldnt make.

I so want this to be real, but being Cinemaphile its probably some copypasta.... 🙁
>great in Star 80
Yessir.
>just like Treat Williams is incredible in Prince of the City
LMAO.
Would Treat Williams have been a bigger star if he didn't have such a gay ass name?
What's gay about Treat?
Treat in those days was a sort of upper class pet name that most people would've recognised as such:

>King of the Gypsies
>Prince of the City
>Queen of the Desert
This is a strange cinematic universe.
he works hard for his money and that's the way a real man does it
>we need a guy—
>he wrapped up filming yesterday sir
What are some good movies with Eric Roberts? Iirc I saw him in 'Entourage' as a mushroom sjaman.
Sir Billibros... how do we respond?
Alan CUMMING
with money
runaway train of course
This looks interesting.
Kino of the highest order.
Added to my dvd wishlist.
Why DVD? It's on bluray.
Never made the switch to Blu-ray.
It's just as well. It's being replaced by 4K. That's the format you should be building your library in.
>script by Akira Kurosawa
>directed by an artsy russian
>produced by Cannon Films
Such an odd combination. Still a great kino.
At least post the original art
I want someone to make something like this but for Runaway Train, and it's a train with feet literally running away.
>made by Canon films
>Eric's ham fisted acting
>stil turns out pretty good
how did they do it?
Star 80
Pope of Greenwich Village
i always really liked him in the wienerroach
the entire film is on youtube

This man made the Best Emma. He got nothing to prove, still he keep going. Kinoman.
WTF Emma Roberts is his daughter? I thought she was British.
he's surprisingly good in a lot of low-budget trash
if, for whatever reason, you are possessed of a desire to watch The Glass Cage (1996), you'll see him turn in a performance that's way, way too good for everyone and everything else involved in the movie

For me its Lance Henrickson
At least Eric Roberts is good
During the meeting of the mob bosses in The Dark Knight he has like one line, and yet he's the most convincing of the aforementioned bosses, all of whom otherwise seem comical, no pun intended. Ching Chong is an SNL parody of Jackie Chan, Gambol has a small penis, and the Eastern-European has by far the worst accent in cinema history.

Although I would contend this attempt at a Texas accent is the worst accent in cinema history. Ironically enough, done by Nolan's favorite actor.
Jesus Fricking Christ, that was hard to watch. I genuinely do not get the obsession with Michael Caine. The dude couldn't act his way out of a cardboard box. On a semi-related note; Alfred is the main antagonist of the Nolan trilogy.
Tim Wilkinson was better in the other movie.
Also Treat Williams was good in The Late Shift
>instead of asking “is there anything he won’t do” I want people to ask “ is there anything he CAN’T do”

I wonder what he means by switching formats ? A streaming series ? Video game ? Theater ?
Luckily he elaborated on that and I only quoted part of the article. Here you go:

I’d watch a long format Nic Cage series
Possibly he’s a detective and his partner is Eric Roberts
Perfect team for True Detective Season 5
Showing up on time and reading your lines accurately is always more important than being "a good actor" and Eric Roberts does that too. What a madman.
I liked his character in Heroes though it wasn't due to his acting. I just like him in general for no tangible reason it feels like
