This honestly. Vader lost his appeal once we went past the earl jones persona and explored his character. Villains often operate best when yiu dont need to go turbo autism with a backstory. Its reason why villans like Joker or Freiza are iconic cause they're evil for the sake of evil, no homosexual backstory about how they lost it all, no whiny "I need revenge, but now im dark" bullshit. Just evil.
It's what makes him interesting. Otherwise he would've been yet another bad guy in a suit that the hero has to take down. Him being revealed as Luke's father was actually pretty novel at the time.
You can craft a interesting villain without going far into their history. Him being Luke's father was already the draw. You had this absolute force being father to the main character and it was groundbreaking. An info drop so powerful that it probably rivaled the anti spoil movement for Endgame.
But part of the reason he's so powerful is because of what happened to him. He's essentially barely alive, three of his four limbs are robotic, his entire body has been significantly burned, and can't speak without a computer. Basically everyday he lives is torture both psychologically and physically. All that pain is fuel for the dark side of the force and is what helps makes vader so powerful.

This was already introduced as a theme in episode 5, by making him a disfigured guy, and then made overt in ep 6, where he is portrayed as being a pitiful servant who is weak both physically and mentally

anakin was in his late teens/early 20s i think during the clone wars, most of us are pretty moronic in those times, even during "normal" times with "normal" upbringings.

Then it all just ends with him being tricked into murdering everyone by an extremely obvious lie.

Vader is intimidating due to the power of the empire. Even before they could, ya know, blow up an entire planet, they still had a huge army that answered to Vader. Everything else about him just adds to it. Plus force powers aren't out in the open a ton. There was never a ton of Jedi, they are almost like a myth to average people along with anything force based.
He was menacing when I saw A New Hope at the cinema. I was seven. Now, not so much.
