The prequels arent good good like as film but i find them really interesting from a creative angle. Its like actually seeing what your brain pictures when you read an old asimov novel. The weird sterile unreality of it is pure space opera autism. This is definitely the only time a person that crazy will have that much creative control.

      Anonymous

This honestly. Vader lost his appeal once we went past the earl jones persona and explored his character. Villains often operate best when yiu dont need to go turbo autism with a backstory. Its reason why villans like Joker or Freiza are iconic cause they're evil for the sake of evil, no homosexual backstory about how they lost it all, no whiny "I need revenge, but now im dark" bullshit. Just evil.

        Anonymous

It's what makes him interesting. Otherwise he would've been yet another bad guy in a suit that the hero has to take down. Him being revealed as Luke's father was actually pretty novel at the time.

          Anonymous

You can craft a interesting villain without going far into their history. Him being Luke's father was already the draw. You had this absolute force being father to the main character and it was groundbreaking. An info drop so powerful that it probably rivaled the anti spoil movement for Endgame.

      Anonymous

But part of the reason he's so powerful is because of what happened to him. He's essentially barely alive, three of his four limbs are robotic, his entire body has been significantly burned, and can't speak without a computer. Basically everyday he lives is torture both psychologically and physically. All that pain is fuel for the dark side of the force and is what helps makes vader so powerful.

People's actions and demeanor make them intimidating.
A Jedi could be formidable but you know they avoid killing and are generally reasonable. Whereas Vader just kills people including children whenever he pleases.

Vader was a tragic pathetic type guy underneath the intimidating exterior.
This was already introduced as a theme in episode 5, by making him a disfigured guy, and then made overt in ep 6, where he is portrayed as being a pitiful servant who is weak both physically and mentally

Fans got very upset when Hayden Christensen and jake loyd ruined “the mystique” by portraying that depth and complexity of character.
Retroactively starwars was “ruined” by this characterization.
But those fans ignored the movies themselves. They just plugged in to the “badass” star war franchise egregore and consumed endless comic book fan fiction where vader is a cool gestapo nazi movie character where he kills ugly women and sniveling coward men

      >depth and complexity
There was nothing deep or complex about his portrayal in the prequels. It was as hamfisted and simple as it gets, he flat out states his insecurities and motivations several times. People disliked it because it was overly melodramatic and with terrible dialog and it also just made Anakin look like a fricking moron when he couldn't see how transparently he was being manipulated.

anakin was in his late teens/early 20s i think during the clone wars, most of us are pretty moronic in those times, even during "normal" times with "normal" upbringings.

consider that anakin was a slave, was raised by some weird group on some other planet, ended up in a war, tried and failed to save his mom who died in front of him, and was getting manipulated by some evil space wizard the entire time.

him acting like a brat or moody made some sense. a lot of what he did made sense, even if the dialogue was shitty sometimes.

        >he flat out states his insecurities and motivations several times.
Every character does. Just because he doesn’t brood and look mysterious for 45 episode of Better Call Saul (muh complexity, muh tones of grey).
The strengths, weaknesses of anakin, the troubles of his life, growing up in slavery, becoming initiated, finding glory in war, finding love, being torn between political loyalties and religion, mindless anger and all encompassing compassion- it’s all very well portrayed in these movies.
Anakin is compelling and exciting in these movies.
Your eyes must be faulty, or your brain not working properly, if you cannot appreciate the drama of his character

          >it's all very well portrayed in these movies
No it isn't. His romance with Padme is some of the most boring and stale romantic writing put to film. His feelings over being a slave are never really expanded upon or brought up. His "endless compassion" is never brought up I don't know where the frick you even got that from. George clearly wanted it to be like this but he wasn't enough of a talented writer to make it compelling so we got shit like "I don't like sand". Then it all just ends with him being tricked into murdering everyone by an extremely obvious lie.
          >Anakin is compelling and exciting in these movies.
Simply saying it doesn't make it true.

meme complaints. Mostly you just want the movie more appealing to your puerile tastes- sort of like sequels.
You had everything there : faux complexity in characters, disney princess romance, marketable characters, no one is racist, no one is genocidal, no one murders children, friends and wife, no one murders Black folk and bugmen.

              >faux complexity in characters, disney princess romance, no one is racist, no one is genocidal, no one murders children, friends and wife, no one murders Black folk and bugmen.

          The lines were just terrible.
"From MY point of view the Jedi are evil!"
          Why not just
          "The jedi are evil!"

Ironically the shorter line would provide more depth and character, showing how corrupted he has become.

The entire trilogy is filled with those awkward phrases where someone just flat out states their philosphy or how they feel.
