Go to your router page and set up a port forward. The default for jellyfin's settings is 8096.

Assuming you set the right settings inside jellyfin, you should be able to connect to your server by entering http:// *your public IP address* :8096

I did this to share shit with my parents and itbworked, but I was then told it was extremely dangerous to just open yourself up like that without a bunch of security shit, panicked and backed out. How risky is it?

Kinda risky, you little Nginx setup won't resist any serious attack. Much better to set up a reverse VPN honestly.

      Anonymous

So it's just like a storage place?

Plex's new 'we're a streaming service' angle is confusing as frick honestly. It's now hard to figure out what the frick it is if you didn't know before they started all that shit.
Plex is software you run on your own home machine. You point it at your media storage and it presents your movies/tv in a web interface that looks similar to online streaming services. You can punch it through your home router to be accessible from anywhere on the internet while you're away from home. You can also share it out to friends and family who can also access it over the internet.

Plex also happen to have a bunch of their own streaming content for free and paid that works just like netflix etc and is hosted by them, but you should ignore all of that because it's trash. The point of Plex is to install it yourself and host your media with it. Most TVs, tablets, phones and operating systems have native apps, too.

Is reading the setup guide really that difficult? You just install the server, set your movie and TV show directories and it will just work.

For the better PVR setup (Sonarr, Radarr, Torrenting, etc), refer to:

      https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6MCtOroZNDAfzOsef_NGxhNEggaPI6AF

This is for Unraid, but it can be applied to any Linux distribution, including whatever OS you have on your Pi.

Homeservers cost hundreds of dollars to build and run with electricity costs. It's objectively more expensive than your shitty streaming subscription when everything gets taken into account.

In exchange, pirates get the absolute best quality for everything, no licensing restrictions, no spyware, full control of their data and don't have to support a pozzed industry. The best part is watching morons like yourself attempt to rationalize giving money to Netflix by trying to claim you're not poor.

Both. It's way more complicated than it should be with numerous settings that are not clear on top of a system that SHOULD work flawlessly (sub file with same name as file should always be treated as forced subtitle and just work) but it does not work. It's a nightmare with TV series because more often than not you will have to manually select subs for every fricking episode or you'll never know what the Dothraki are saying.
