Heaven's Gate

Woah. There's been a lot of discussion about this film on Cinemaphile lately so I finally watched it. And yeah, it's amazing.

He talks about it in one of those super gay "career timeline" type videos GQ and Vanity Fair have done. I don't watch them no sir, super gay those. Yes. Lame.

    >The most talked about film of the decade!
Lol, that's a nice way to put it.
Anyway, all film critics should have been lined up and shot for all the shit the smeared over this movie. It was enough for the audience to reject it, there was no reason to abandon all intellectual integrity to appease the dumb masses.

Yeah though idk if the theatrical version was actually that bad. Never seen it. I heard there's an awful amber tint/filter added to it

Critics have herd mentality and should never be trusted. If marketers can get the right ones to sway, they will all follow suit. And the masses are just brain dead lemmings that follow along. Masses say Heaven's Gate is bad even though it's brilliant. Masses say that Oppenheimer is great even though it's a steaming pile of shit. Because of the lack of "influencers", "professionals" and likes, Cinemaphile is one of the few places where movies are honestly discussed, the shills are brought to light and actual good media is championed.

It really speaks to the power of bad publicity, because Apocalypse Now was arguably even more of a bloated mess of a production that resulted in a similarly indulgent and aimless wannabe masterpiece, but Coppola had the reputation and experience to control the narrative while Cimino was an overnight sensation riding the hype train from one out-of-nowhere smash film and was already facing the inevitable backlash before Heaven's Gate even started shooting.

I read that there is a 20 second section of the film, from near the beginning the big outdoor dance at Harvard, which took over 2 months of shooting alone.

It's beautiful tho. Cimino was autistically obsessed with dance scenes for some reason

I like the film overall but holy shit the rollerskating town hall hoedown is stupid and pointless.

It's supposed to show a slice of life of what living in a frontier town was really like. Skating was a big fad at the time and even small towns had it. Movies like The Good The Bad And The Ugly and Wild Bunch are extremely unrealistic and people didnt live in dirt poor towns like it is portrayed. Every town had access to mail and the Sears catalog provided virtually everything the world had to offer. He was trying to show a realistic portrayal of a western frontier town as a contrast to all the westerns that preceded it.

Stop samegayging, making new threads about this overindulgent mess every day.

It's failure was well-earned and fully deserved. The great tragedy is that it took a brilliant studio down with it.

        New Hollywood WAS Goyslop.
Only films released under the Hayes Code was based since the israelites had to keep their hatred of white people under control.

it was such a massive disaster both financially and artistically that all "Bad political" events gained the suffix "gate" ever since
      Watergate
      russiagate
      etc

        >a massive disaster both financially and artistically

It was also a disaster for the animals brutalised on set. Even under in the old days under the Hayes code there were greater protections to ensure the humane treatment of animals.

Cimino didn't give a flying frick, not for United Artists financial viability, and certainly not for animal welfare.

Good, frick animals. I can't even begin to count all the kinos with onscreen animal abuse.
