Heres why Batgirl died

WB statement:
The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

    Also this,
Essentially, because both movies (Batgirl/Scoob) were commissioned before Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, the newly formed company Warner Bros. Discovery can receive tax benefits if it doesn't use materials from pre-merger for profit. The company had until mid-August to make a decision on the write-downs, hence why the decision was made briskly. In other words, a lot of this came down to money

It's a mess marketing-wise. It has JK simmons who was in Justice League, and Michael Keaton and not connected to the Robert Pattinson Batman. They probably want to save batgirl for those movies now. Just use Jeffrey Wright as Gordon and have it be his daughter.

This. Getting to write off a loss completely in one tax year instead of spreading it out over a number of years is huge, especially with an increase in the corporate minimum tax rate looming:

It died because the new suits realized it was complete woke garbage and realize audiences are avoiding woke capeshit like the plague (even Marvel is failing to fill seats now), so it was better to scrap a completed but terrible film than to further degrade the DC brand, which the new owners are very keen on capitalizing on. That's why, and anything else is cope.

And it was deemed hot garbage (just look at the suits lmao) it also had a weird continuity with characters and reference across different universes that won’t fit the new plan for DC. why lose up to 150m when you can get it all back and act as if nothing happened

There is no way the write-off is more profitable than releasing the movies/shows unless they looked at it and said, "wow this is shit. let's just take the loss and write it off."

It was going to be released on hbo max so it would make literally nothing. And it was too shitty for a theatrical release. So at that point why even spend 100m when you have the opportunity to get it all back

Exactly, the DCEU can’t afford any more blunders, batgirl is a risky character already if her movie wasn’t perfect it would get shit on and the standard DCEU shitting would continue and frick over their future movies profits

What in the absolute Frick!? Why would they Fricking do this? It was being setup to fail! There is Fricking no way you can make a modern superhero blockbuster movie for under 100m budget. Just no Fricking way!

Costly big actors plus newbie directors that don’t know how to handle a project that size and probably no execs were there for quality control (just look at the costumes lmao) which is how it ended up as a CW-like thing. But only the old regime was moronic enough to green light a 70m dollar movie that would only go to hbomax

          Anonymous

To add on, the batgirl budget was already 20m over the 70m budget and they were barely in post production, that plus promotion probably would’ve went up to 150m. And the new scoob costed 40m. It’s a lot of money saved for what will be actual good future products

They’re unironically soft rebooting the DCU with Black Adam. I don’t even know if it will cross over with their version of Shazam. Which is a baffling decision as Black Adam likely will be mediocre at best, they’re just hoping the Rock will be enough to guarantee Marvel level big bucks. Once Black Adam underperforms, the DCU will shelve everything and do a hard reset. Matt Reeves will keep making Batman movies while they try to recalibrate, they’ll probably try to start again with a new Superman in 5 years but they’ll either make it a woke nightmare that no one will watch, it’ll be a boring too serious MoS style movie, or they’ll actually do it right and start fresh with a Superman that feels like Superman. But 5 years who the frick knows if theaters will still even be around, it could just end being Max series which are just a slight upgrade over CW slop.

Please explain what you think this is? Because Superman Returns bombed at the box office while Man of Steel and BvS were both profitable

Superman Returns didn't feel like Superman, he was a creep he kept staring at Lois Lane in the shower and also blatantly abandoned his son. I know they tried to make it a direct continuation of the Donner films, but none of the fun, color, humor, and inspiring character of Superman is really there. It's dull and drab and makes Superman look like an alien, which he is, but he's meant to feel more human. You want a good Superman just watch JLU or the Superman animated series. He's still heroic and noble, but at times he cuts loose and gets a little dark when he gets pushed too far, he's a the last boy scout in a world where that's absent and yet he doesn't come across as naiive or as a joke to the audience. Hell Marvel characterized him more or less correctly in the form of Captain America. If it's a concern over his power level, just limit his powers, his power level in the comics and animated series has always been wildly inconsistent.

It’s a comic book movie and Superman the animated series and JLU both have character depth without making Superman a whiney mope in a dull blue suit that looks borderline grey. You can have characters that are morally good and still have depth. Not everything must be subversion.

That’s pretty much it, it’s incredibly difficult to outdo man of steel, the people that b***h about it want something that would end up being generic trash which is arguably more of a fundamental flaw of the character. We’ve been so starved for Superman content that it’s easy to forget he’s boring and Batman is the cooler choice. The amount of people that could do a good Superman movie bare slim, personally the only ones I think could do a proper Cavill Sequel are Christopher McQuarrie and Joseph Kosinski(although the ideal movie for him is Green Lantern). Snyder could also do it but the his outcome heavily depends on who’s producing and writing, all 3 of his DC movies are similar yet different in a lot of ways from each other.

This is what the Coates and Jordan’s projects were supposed to be, last I heard of the Coates one Zaslav shut down the idea of Clark Kent being black. Assuming that one anon was right about Thursday being full of cancellations I’m assuming this stuff along with all the other future DC stuff like Zatana is going as well, the only stuff that’ll stay are Blue Beetle, Black Adam, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2, The Flash, Joker 2, and The Batman 2, and Peacemaker S2. Furthermore with Keaton’s scene getting replaced with Affleck, rumors of The Flash’s ending being changed to remove Hamada’s plan, and one scooper who is confident Affleck will be in another project after the Flash it seems that Batfleck is back. Hopefully that opens the door for Henry to come back also, I bet Zaslav would be willing to give him the solo movie he wants. We’ll have to wait and see what happens before looking beyond. Pic related was Hamada’s plan for the justice league and thank god it seems like it’s getting scrapped

It's like Marvel was drinking poison with Phase 4 and instead of pressing their advantage or even just waiting them out, DC was going "GIMME A HIT O' THAT SHEEEIT BRO!" And then Zaslav stepped in and put a straight jacket on them.

No he was doing Clark Kent, he was gonna race swap Clark and somehow equate public and/government hatred for Superman to racism, Lois was going to be Asian. I’m not exaggerating that’s literally how it was, last I heard Zaslav said no to black Clark and since it’s still in the writing stage I’m betting it’ll get scrapped along with all the other conceptual projects. Michael B Jordan and JJ Abrams were also doing a Superman project but there are no details about that at least that I can remember, they could have been doing val zod

        >soft rebooting
No, DCEU leaves too bad a taste in people's mouths. It needs a full reboot and complete rebranding to distance it from the DCEU films as much as possible. They can make a big deal about it, release it as a huge news for Comic Con or something, DCEU is officially ending and they're starting the DC Film Universe or something. You can't make people question if a new Green Arrow movie is tangentially related to the old DCEU films, you have to make it clear DCEU is dead and what you're releasing is completely new.

        Anonymous

They need to avoid soft rebooting and just hard reset. Keep momoa aquaman, keep shazam, keep pattinson batman mainly because he seems to be less of a drama prone alcoholic than ben, keep wonderwoman mainly because they're stuck with her, bring back cavil superman with decent writing or hard reset supes, axe the flash entirely for the short term, and just focus on solo films for the next few years until each of those characters is set up properly.

They can do crossovers and shit once they have an actual universe. Right now they have a pile of wildly uneven movies and no clear plan to progress anything. Its not a coincidence the solo films did miles better than the crossovers, they need to lay the groundwork before they can try something like that.

Why are they stuck with the israeli stick insect? There are plenty of Khazar milkers out there that dculd do a better job of fitting the dostume and acting. Thats if the actress has to be israeli.
Pattison can't emote, Afleck is drinking his life away. Its a suit with an exposed mouth. The Mouth of Sauron could play the roll. So again, it could be any one.

The Flash movie will write him out of the DCKU. They're already expecting it to underperform because of Miller shenanigans and know parents won't bring their kids to see an outed child groomer and sociopath. Warner bros is banking on older fans coming out of the woodwork to see Keaton (and Snyder fans for Batfleck) to at least break the 300 million threshold, but anything beyond that isn't expected anymore.

I don't think oldgays really care all that much about BatKeaton, so WB might be in for a surprise. I know I don't care all that much to see him return, despite Keaton being "my" Batman.
Also, imagine how livid Keaton now must be. WB drag him out of retirement and push him to return to a role he checked out of 30 years ago and now he gets fricked out of two movies he stars in, making it all a giant waste of his time.

Quite the opposite actually. Dude was terrified to do anything with Justice League, Superman, and Batman after Snyder exited and needed to hold Geoff Johns hand to do things. He was a pussy and was probably being an ass along with the other execs, the regime of which operated out of malice. The Snyder cut and The Suicide Squad were AT&T productions, Hamada sat there and let DC churn out shit like Birds of Prey and WW1984, when he saw green lantern in ZSJL he called Johns to see if it was okay which it wasn’t because Johns wanted to use green lantern for himself and now the green lantern projects are canceled lmao. The deal for the Snyder cut was that it would be non canon but the execs knew people would see it as the definitive edition and they still fricked with it out of spite by not promoting it, no releasing it in china, and removing John Stewart what you think would be a golden minority plus for them. Thank Zaslav for sending them and all the shitty projects like batgirl to the curb

Is it weird that I kinda feel bad for Brendan Fraser and Leslie Grace, despite not really giving a frick about this movie? Like the movie looked like a total shitshow, but Grace seemed to be having the time of her life, playing a superhero.
I guess they got paid, but still.

I always liked the Keaton suit. Something about the all black, pointy ears and big yellow symbol just does something for me. But his face looks so stupid and chunky in the cowl.

Okay, but jokes aside, why does hollywood REFUSE to have main characters that are actually trained by older mentors anymore? Why does the hero have to already naturally be great?
And don't just chime in with generic blaming it on woketards - this same happens with white male heroes at the moment too

      you know why

because everyone is being played by black actors/actresses now and you can't show an old white guy mentor training them because they're naturally perfect according to hollyood

Because if they scrap it they can declare it a loss and make it tax deductible. If the product gets released, it's no longer considered a loss.
And WB knew they have a flop on their hands, didn't want to risk more money for post-production and marketing and if they cancel it - that's one less DCEU movie they have to worry about after they rebrand with the new strategy.
      It's a win/win for them from a corporate standpoint.

They don’t lose money, a tax write off gives it all back to them via insurance. If they continued to work on it and release it they’d spend another 100m for nothing but a goofy CW level movie on HBO Max

      [...]
oh I didn't know that. seems logical

Well minus the bonuses they pay to the actors and directors for canceling it which will only be a few mill which is only a few dollars in the grand scheme of this. The leaks suggest the movie was shit anyway and with Affleck potentially taking his spot back from Keaton this is good

    >muh taxe write off
Tell me how I know you never tried opening your own business, even a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop. Nobody can take $90 mil hits on a "tax write off", if that was so fricking simple, every studio would just throw at least one $100 million movie in the fricking bin during the year - yet it doesn't fricking happen, and now that it did, it's front page news.

You can carry forward losses into the next tax year. They'll make it back, even if it takes a few years. If it flops catastrophically they'll never claw that money back.

Hopefully, cancelling batgirl was a good step in the right direction but the discovery+ rumor is worrying. Hopefully Zaslav isn’t moronic. All he needs to do is get the Justice League back together, initiate the black label movies, bring all dc comics to HBO Max, and the income will soak in

          Anonymous

Actors need constant work. A lot of actors love franchise films and tv work because this guarantees a stable income.
To do a film like this, as an actor you can't take any projects that might clash with it for filming times. Or that might clash with it in branding (like leading another capeshit film by a different studio). This film was relatively low budget and the actress was only just getting her breakthrough which means that her paycheck was almost definitely under $1m.
By the film not releasing, that means that she doesn't get a sequel. That means that she now has an extended gap of starring in any films. That means that all the personal publicity she did for the film makes her look sad and has people pitying her. That means that other studios are wondering how bad her acting was or if she was difficult to work with.
Basically, it hurts her career badly when it should have just been starting, taking the wind out of the sails from her breakout in In the Heights. It's unironically an actor's worst nightmare.
No actors would want to risk something that bad for their career.

            Anonymous

It also means she and every other actor in the movie can't use footage from it in their demo reels, making it harder to find future work.

WB is going to support her though! And other studios should understand what happened. It's not any of their fault!
