There's nothing edgy about it. Zemo was making alot of positive headway as a hero. Moonstone was in a fricking coma at the time for some reason so Songbird basically got all of her characterization. THAT was the poor writing. Karla was making alot of interesting heroic developments and was leading the team while Songbird was supporting on the sidelines. She should have been the one to make something romantic happen with Zemo. She had a brief romantic connection to Clint Barton which was cool and could have factored in as well. Like maybe Karla has a thing for good, honest leaders and could be molded into becoming better than she is
Instead she dirt naps and Songbird sucks up all the glory. It wasn't bad though. Melissa needed SOMETHING. I just didn't want her development to come at the expense of another cool hot chick character who is more interesting and stronger.
