I don't think he ever stopped. The stuff with Maddie was decades ago. The problems Scott may have as a character also permeate shit writing for the X-Men/Mutants in general. I've long held the opinion that X-Men should be in their own separate continuity.
The show really came out making him look cool as frick though, showing a few different usercases for his optic blasts for the uninitiated. There's going to be the typical X-Men soap opera bullshit, but I hope Scott gets development and comes out of it okay.
