>His status grew so large and legendary that when Japanese Emperor Hirohito visited the United States in 1975, he asked to meet John Wayne, the symbolic representation of his country's former enemy.[176] Likewise when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev visited the United States in 1959, he made two requests: to visit Disneyland and meet Wayne.[177]
>Wayne is the only actor to appear in every edition of the annual Harris Poll of Most Popular Film Actors, and the only actor to appear on the list after his death. Wayne was in the top 10 in this poll for 19 consecutive years, starting in 1994, 15 years after his death.[181]
>Wayne was the recipient of several attempted assassinations, most notably in 1966, when a sniper was caught attempting to shoot the actor in Vietnam
There will never be another actor as grand, as important, or as emblematic of the medium of film itself as John Wayne.

It isn’t John Wayne’s fault, but everything in this movie was wrong. But it was wrong because everything published about the Parker clan at the time this movie was made, was wrong. This book tells the real story about the Parkers.

He wasn't executed for counterfeiting, he was arrested and after a long and gentle process of getting him into the police car, he kicked his way out the other side and put himself in a position where he had to be held on the ground (which he agreed to out loud), and then his heart stopped while waiting for the ambulance that the officers had called to check him out for his erratic behavior. He also didn't have a "knee on the neck" as multiple camera angles showed. Even the prosecutors that put the main officer in prison were forced to accept that this was inaccurate and began arguing that the cause of death was Floyd's head being held too close to the exhaust pipe of the car (where he placed himself after exiting the police vehicle). Now what the hell does that have to do with John Wayne?

I didn't watch the world cup, I watched the videos of the event in question and I watched the trial of Derek Chauvin, and that was a point that was settled. When the left tried to cancel him for bullshit reasons a few years ago, I remember a quote about some dem president "I sure hell didn't vote for him, but he's our president, and I hope he does a good job", this one quote makes him ten times a better person than any of his critics could ever hope to be.

Reminds me of the joke that the director told Wayne to turn round and look up at Jesus in awe, so Wayne turns round and goes "awwww".

He also said something like "I've been for 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats in my life, and somehow that makes me a right-wing extremist."
In the same interview, a Republican audience member stood up and told him he's been too chummy with Democrat politicians lately and he ought not forget which side he's on. John Wayne told him plainly that he'll vote for whoever he thinks will do a better job.

The funniest thing to me is hearing that John Wayne was one of the first actors they cast for the production, so originally he got top billing and was heavily advertised. "See John Wayne in... THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD!"
And then the movie goes on for like 4 hours with no John Wayne, and then finally at the end when Jesus is crucified and it starts to rain, John Wayne shows up for a few seconds and lazily delivers the line "truly this man was the son of God..." with no enthusiasm at all.

There were a lot of Jesus-adjacent movies at the time, like Ben Hur, The Robe, Barabbas, The Big Fisherman, so you could easily see this image and assume it’s a John Wayne movie about a Roman soldier who converts to Christianity.

John Wayne physically personified mid twentieth century America. He was an irl Uncle Sam and it is no surprise that the leader of one of our defeated enemies wanted to meet him. Imagine being Hirowhosit in that exchange
    >demure tiny jap obsessed with formality and respect
    >japs think you're a literal demigod
    >utterly dwarfed by by huge, charismatic, straight talking, brash American exceptionalist who doesn't give a frick to learn all your gay ass politesse or show deference to the imperial majesty of your defeated nation
That would be fricking life altering. Decades of growing up as Emperor, divine ruler, descendant of a literal godess, millions of fanatical followers ready to die for you, who tremble in your presence, only to get MOGGED.

One night they had a surprise for us. Before the film, the curtains parted, and out stepped John Wayne, wearing a cowboy outfit – 10-gallon hat, bandana, checkered shirt, two pistols, chaps, boots and spurs."
    >The account continued: "He grinned his aw-shucks grin, passed a hand over his face and said 'Hiya guys!'
    >"He was greeted by stony silence. Then somebody booed. Suddenly everyone was booing. This man was a symbol of the fake machismo we had come to hate, and we weren’t going to listen to him. He tried and tried to make himself heard, but we drowned him out, and eventually he quit and left."
