    lol
actually a brilliantly written comedic line.
A mediocre writer would have just had them try to use a time machine.
The way this was written gives the audience an extra facepalm when the inclusion of shitty, dollarstore crystals are shown as a requirement.

I live in Montana and some towns still look like that. Look up Colstrip or Glasgow

Idaho is the state form of that liminal space meme

I dont mean so much like how the buldings look/are decorated and the vehicles people drive. I understand how that stuff can kind of linger. But just how people dressed and the overall style of individuals.

flyover towns are slower with the latest trends

Like this. Those kids look nothing like the HS kids in Napoleon Dynamite. That looks like typical early 2000s HS kid style (maybe not popular kids but still)

fashion trends change with IRL influence

if you live in a big city you are very likely to see new fashion trends demonstrated [worn] before your very eyes, IRL. someone looking hip IRL is what makes people follow a trend. that doesn't happen in podunk towns. maybe you see it on TV but that's not enough to actually generate the kind of change you're talking about. stuff makes it to small towns once it's completely accepted in the mainstream, which usually happens as a trend becomes passe and is replaced with something else

thus causing the delay of years or sometimes decades

Sure i get what you are saying but i dont think people would still be dressing like this. Like this is a style that would be at least a decade out of date by the time Napoleon Dynamite takes place.

Are you just wilfully ignoring what everyone is telling you? Yes, idiot. They're "out of date" but because it's a small bumfrick town in Idaho people still dress like that. I grew up in the late 90s/early 00s in a smallish community and it DEFINITELY had an out of date mishmash of 70s/80s style from clothes to architecture to everything else.

No shit you dumb frick. Architecture and furniture i can somewhat understand but you are absolutely delusional if you think people even in small towns fricking dressed decades out of date. That anon even posted a picture of kids from the early 2000s and wow guess what they werent dressed like the fricking 70s-80s. Oh and by the way the town in Idaho this takes place is fricking 2 hours from Boise, not a small town.

To ACTUALLY answer your question, the movie was originally meant to be set in the 70s, but the producers told Hess a film in that time frame wouldnt sell so he told them it was set in the 2000s
