Essentially something that isn't a boardroom film at this point. Something that isn't at least obviously algorithmically driven. I know that relies on "unknown unknowns," since nobody can point to Disney or whomever's "movie algorithm," but just any flick that doesn't follow either the tired rehash or nu-formulae. Fwiw I previously tired of normal action movies as well, all being similarly formulaic, and I know you can basically read Hollywood like a tree, "cutting open" any era to read the rings of whatever was popular in whatever decade. So I guess I'm just beyond exhausted with the capeshit millennial writing trends and ready to move the frick on, but I seriously doubt the "talent" and integrity of today's artists so probably things will only get worse and worse as a new trend develops, IF they even can develop one in this creative climate.
Then watch non-hollywood movies. Watch indie shit or foreign movies. I just watched BlackBerry yesterday and it was great. Matt Johnson and his indie/gorilla filmmaking style is always a pleasure, and the acting from the two leads was very good. Sure, it's similar to The Social Network or The Founder, but doesn't have the name power or budget behind it like they do.
