Actually they were plenty, it's just the "game" elements were put on the backseat to focus on the relationship drama and other plot elements.
For example; I used to love the idea of the "prototyping" your Kernal to customize your adversaries in Sburb, that along with their grist type or element, ALONG with the various base types could make all the different enemies unique and interesting.
I always interpreted the enemy types as being less important given enemies can have all the above AND different weapons or other abilities; plus the "encounters" are more like real life and less like a video game in flat arenas so Sburb's combat or adventuring would be much less repetitive then in a different game given Sburb is basically a total VR game in universe.

Early HS was basically PS with some dialogue thrown in. Pesterlogs in the beginning were short and funny, I think they were a good addition to the MSPA style before they became huge and boring and started happening every page.

Problem Sleuth, the Intermission and to an extent pic related kind of prove to me that Hussie is best at coming up with memorable motifs, setpieces and stablishing funny dynamics within a simple yet properly defined set of characters without having to worry about giving them complex long-term character arcs. It's not Homestuck AS A WHOLE wasn't good at one point or that Hussie is bad at writing dialog, but I never felt like the man could properly take a story of such scope to its full potential to begin with.
This. The second set of trolls and kids proved my suspicions that Hussie has a lot more interest in introducing characters and getting them started on a journey then seeing those journey's through. If they had to be in the story, they never should have been more than shadowy figures you knew existed but where entirely separate and unreachable outside of small assists between the two sets of games. At most a text conversation but never fully joining the narrative.
Hussie should've made a blogpost where he outlined which characters he cared about and which ones were comic relief.
And then someone should've cut off his hands when he turned Gamzee into a narrative agent.
This comic never getting a continuation was a tragedy.

Agreed. Homestuck smacks to me of a pretty classic "has good ideas, but refuses to consider even the remotest bit of editing". Think Star Wars prequels. Especially with content as off the wall and bombastic as Homestuck, Hussie desperately needed someone to say "don't do that, it sounds boring and dumb" every once in a while.
Most of the complaints about him listening to readers TOO much is because of his responses to the loudest and most vocal morons in the peanut gallery. Which, like, I shouldn't have to explain why doing that is a terrible fricking idea.

Last homosuck thread I starting reading karkart goes to a convention, that sent me in a two months binge of reading all the mspfa adventures I could find, I even stop using this place all together. Great comic, very inspiring. I even starting working on my own mspfa, with nothing related with homestuck in general because I'm hetero (but I respect your lifestyle).
Sad I got banned from the discord of the author because all the furry softcore porn I kept posting there, but is great to know people still making things on this format and is not 100% dead. Since one of the things I really like about homestuck is how well it integrates art, animation, music with interactive media in general in a very simple and very approachable form of storytelling.
Weird how this is still up but Im thankful. On the topic of reader-driven/interactive webcomics what do you guys think of Ruby Quest which started around the same time as Homestuck and spawned Cinemaphiles own /qst/ board?
As an avid /qst/er, quests back on /tg/ are way different then they are now on /qst/. I personally don't like Ruby Quest that much because I think it's a bit too scatterbrained but the actual process of voting and having drawings and such was pretty revolutionary for the time and fun. I highly recommend checking out some of our current drawthreads on /qst/ today; traffic is down but there are some really dedicated QMs on there.

Pretty good flash, uses one of the best songs from the soundtrack too. The retcon was handled horribly but the buildup to it wasn't bad.
If it stuck it could have saved the comic, or more accurately made its ending actually a little interesting. As it was though it was a mark of the end times for Homestuck. All style, zero substance or standards. The jarring art style swaps look like complete shit (Karkat gains and loses sleeves between consecutive shots, barely anyone is even trying to match Hussie's own style) and the whole thing is fricking pointless because of the retcon plotline. All it achieved in the end was cementing that nothing fricking mattered and there were no stakes anymore, which Collide just hammered in completely.

It was going to be about that but they never released new chapters. Dirk and Rose were going to play a sburb game, while the other chsracters were searching for them in space.
What other enemy types could their be? You have generics, cavalry, heavies plus flying versions of each then the elites sent by the royals. Prototyping from the players expand this roster greatly.
Minibosses. I always thought some sort of minibosses between each portal would be cool. Give the adventure a greater sense of progression and you could give them more personality and goals that reflect the planet quest.

Gimmick bosses would be more fun, tho. Specially because you could have fun making the bosses, making them in to more of a character, making joke bosses, giving them back stories and such.

One of the monsters from the beginning of Cascade who tries to stop the Scratch. She was the only monster strong enough to shrug off John's lava tornadoes, requiring a hit from the Vrillyhoo hammer. Presumably this marks her as a cut above all the other underlings.

I think a big part of Hussie's downward spiral was his father dying, on top of that his inability to commit to his own plan of DO NOT START DEVELOPMENT ON THE FRICKING GAME UNTIL THE COMIC IS DONE
If you want a serious opinion, it was a combination of several factors that led to his meltdowns. First of all, he was a narcissist. The 'yellow yard' defined that with his bizarre rant of giving out cow milk.
Second? He was likely a huge amphetamine addict at the time, because his output was not sane or normal, and melting down from continued stim abuse is easy and frequent.
Third was yeah, his Dad, and the fact that Hussie is a trust fund baby who has never had to work hard in his life. He clearly had a horrible relation with his Dad that the comic was being used as a platform for.
Fourth and final, the man is just a fricking unprofessional mess who pissed off every musician and artist he worked with. Bolin was 100% right when he said Hussie cannot talk professionalism, he's a self-absorbed rich boy who can flop projects with no consequence.
Also the dude had no idea how to handle internet teenagers, which got creepy real fast when his age came to light and he was surrounded by kids a lot and kept writing teenage frick stuff into his comic.

It’s too bad Viz stopped making the books with author commentary because I really want to see what Hussie would say about Act 6. See I was fine with this as a concept, but the execution was ugly and mean and unfun. They're literal gods in a reborn earth with infinite alchemy powers. Why couldn't have Rose and Jade been consensual and hot? Why couldn't Jade be really into what she got and enjoy it? Nobody was allowed any happiness. Mine are John, Rose, Dave, Jade, Karkat, Kanaya, Aradia, and Roxy. Everyone else was expendable as far as I cared by the end.
Karkat for sure, he was so pathetic post-retcon and seemingly only existed to be Dave’s gay awakening
Kanaya knocking him out so he wouldn’t try to participate in the final battle was just insulting
I have a lot of anger for the contempt Hussie showed for his own characters, but Karkat's horrible treatment will always be a special kind of hate. It's like he gave up on writing his character and just turned him into a joke of suffering-porn.
Karkat should have recruited Spades Slick to fight alongside the kids

Blue Team: Eridan, Nepeta Leijon, Equius Zahhak, and Feferi Peixes.
They got the worst out of it. It seemed like they were building up for them, like with the Murderstuck for Eridan, Equius is technically part of Lord English, Feferi's ghost speaking with Jade and she made the Dream Bubbles, and Nepeta being a descendant of the Disciple. I would have liked them to see them survive or do more than the kernelsprite. They barely do much with them after that, Nothing like teaching the Alpha Kids about their aspects or anything. They are mostly just used for jokes.
Jade. Jade was the only character I wanted to have a good end. To have accomplished something meaningful after enduring through the tomfoolery that was Grimbark Jade and Eternally Sleeping Jade.
And Jade's final role in the story was to get punched in the face.
I will never forgive Hussie.

This webcomic is full of tonal whiplash.
It was on a really solid trajectory at the end of Act 4. The real whiplash was the trolls utterly destroying the pacing and point of the comic.
I didn't remember the exact act number, but yeah, the trolls being introduced is where the comic usually lost me when I tried reading it.
That was Act 5. Descend was this incredible end to Act 4... and all that momentum was murdered as we spent gigantic amounts of time on every single troll. The comic never recovered after that decision.

Yeah bro but usually tone shifts are paced well so that they don't feel jarring. That or the comedy is subtle enough that it doesn't completely change the tone of a serious moment
in contrast in homestuck you'll have a character summon the power of Mr. Clean or whatever and he materializes and tries to attack the villian with dishsoap before tripping and turning into water followed by a main character crying as they sacrifice their life to stop the villain
Sometimes tone shifts are meant to be jarring. There's a certain cynicism to Homestuck that gets enhanced by the characters having real problems and emotions in a universe that treats them like disposable jokes
I get that but it goes on for so fricking long. I don't think that kind of cynicism mixed with weird tonal mismatches lends itself to a decade-long comic with ever-increasing setting and story complexity.
Skipped ahead a little bit and he's whining that the Zoosmell Pooplord joke is illogical and somehow takes away from the characters and stakes. This guy is highly autistic, but you could also tell that from the way he speaks. "First impressions are very important," as he said in the last second of the video I could bother to watch, and my first impression is that this guy is a total moron who only knows how to deal with stories that are entirely silly or entirely serious, with no room for stories that blend in elements of both. He is also, as mentioned previously, autistic, and therefore cannot understand whether a story is silly or serious unless the author comes out and tells him directly. His opinion is worth nothing.
I've watched this video but almost every complaint is "why wasn't the theming/tone/humor/mechanics/etc. planned out and consistent from page 1!!!!!" like the fact that this was originally a command-based comic is a major detriment to it as a whole

Gamzee was the beginning of the end, most of the other trolls were at least decent characters (Karkat, Equius), had a lot of stuff under the hood that would've made for good writing or development (Feferi, Kanaya), or both (Eridan, Vriska) but Gamzee is just a completely pointless and shit character that adds nothing to the story
