I re-read the whole thing a few months ago. Aside from the post-retcon part, Homestuck still holds up. And even there are some parts of the post-recon like Collide that are great.

Most of homestuck still holds up really well. It's really easy to remember the whole thing badly, because the worst part of it went on for the longest because of the hiatuses. But even a lot of Act 6 is quite good. It doesn't get unsalvageable until the retcon.

How did Karkat actually frick up their relationship again? All I can really remember is all the cute Vantas/Pyrope scenes (Kankri and Latula included). Frick, it's totally bullshit how much these ranty fricks just like these wacky goblin girls, but it's so bad that Terezi needs to send John back in time to kill the ship.
After Terezi felt like she had to kill Vriska, it sent her spiraling into depression and they drifted apart. Karkat gave her a pep talk which gave her the motivation to try and fix their relationship, but when she found him Meenah was flirting with him and invited him to join her army.
That crushed her and her depression got even worse to the point where she started dating Gamzee.
Well she was already dating Gamzee by the time they met Meenah
Karkat couldnt decide if he hated or loved her and kept giving off mixed signals
She tried to force him to act on his feelings by hanging out with Dave which didnt work and then Hussie killed her character by making her start hate dating Gamzee for random bullshit drama, and then she sees her dancestor in the dreambubbles and Karkat comforts her with a really emotionally touching speech and then it all gets retconned because Terezi finds out John has retcon powers and only uses them to undo her mistakes and bring back Vriska and them decides to write her post retcon self a message saying “YOU DONT NEED HIM” because Hussie thought Karkat x Terezi was “too obvious” and wanted to “subvert expectations” despite it being literally the only romantic relationship he’s ever written well.
Then post Canon Terezi decides to bawd it up with John on Earth C because John is depressed and Roxy leaves him for Calliope and/or he’s dying of Cherub poison. Then Terezi carries around John’s dead cum-covered body in his dad’s wallet and bawds it up more with Robot Rose because her character was destroyed post act 5

Just look at the stats.
John/Rose was never going to happen because Hussie arbitrarily hates first boy/first girl pairings. What he failed to realize is that those tend to be bland in media because the characters have no actual chemistry and are largely paired off out of a sense of obligation. John and Rose had incredible chemistry, however, so he really should have come to terms with it. On the other hand, with how the only good canon romances in the comic were the ones involving characters who don't speak through chat logs, perhaps it's for the best.

Act 6 is a lot better on a re-read even with obvious roadbumps like the trickster shit. Nothing can salvage the post-retcon portion, though. To think the infamous Gigapause panel really was the end of the line, and that we'd all be better off if it had never updated past that page.

Yeah, the ending was complete shit and yeah the writing was on the wall well before the final flash, but damn, there really is nothing else like Homestuck. When it was firing on all cylinders it was funny and smart and crazy intricate. Hussie really nailed creating characters who popped and felt distinct, and managed to give even the jokiest trolls some pathos. And pre-retcon, it really is the best time travel story this side of Primer.
And I miss the community. Not the toxic proto-SJW tumblrgays but the mspfanadventures guys, who were inspired by Homestuck to put out work that was genuinely great. The Homestuck fandom really did encourage creation as a form of fandom and I miss that.
I miss the Homestuck that existed before Hussie removed the "caucasian" joke and I got that sinking feeling in my stomach. I miss the Homestuck that existed before we all realized that he didn't care and nothing would get answered and we were morons for ever believing.
The fact that there's nothing else like Homestuck is why it's impossible to move on from it after it shat the bed. We'll be chasing the high of a work that updated with new content daily for most of its peak--often multiple times per day--and had a fandom creating worthwhile content every second otherwise for the rest of our lives. Someone like Hussie is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence and it just so happened that he was destined to fail on top of having such incredible work ethic at one time. Sure, there are plenty of better stories out there, but none of them provide daily stimulation like Homestuck did. We weren't meant to know such pleasures, for we cannot function in their absence.

It disappoint me greatly that Homestuck's popularity faded away. No one remembers it anymore and the people that do know of it are homosexuals or younger than the comic itself. I can't tell others to read it because the website is broken, or they would think I was a homosexual myself.
There are many such cases of media that ended, yet are fondly remembered and known by many people. I doubt if you showed people a picture of Vriska nowadays they wouldn't know who she was. For something so huge its amazing how Homestuck vanished from popular culture.

That Eridan became an allegory for my own "high potential" maximum burnout abject failure of a life makes me the big sad as an Aquarius.
Eridan had the coolest aesthetics and interests of any troll. He could have really been an interesting character if he hadn't been consumed by a proto-incel joke, used as a tool to tie up some loose ends, and summarily disposed of. Even turning traitor, he could have still been utilized in an interesting way after the fact. Hussie's refusal to acknowledge the potential of the lesser trolls was one of his many, many shortcomings as an author, but all the trolls he did treat like proper characters ended up going to shit, so...
I thought the idea that Eridan was basically the equivalent of ""You were the MC in the rough draft but not in the final cut" for his life was interesting. having his ancestor basically drop the ball on being savior and the game moving on to the next course of action was kind of unique. I wish his character arc had come to be about not dwelling on said failures, though, since he was still a really powerful troll. Even for a while after his death he was kind of upper tier.

I look back at Homestuck fondly. Fortunately got a great experience out of it and I think a reason for it was my ignorance back then. I never knew of any dramas or got too deep into the fandom.
Anyways, what's your opinion on both John's and Jake's treatment? I've read the epilogues and a bit of HS^2. Is it true that the male cast is treated like shit? For me many other female characters feel abandoned/unfinished and it's sad. Like some other anons here said, Hussie didn't know what to do and how to make the most out of them.
I feel like Jake, even in the comic proper, is way too much of a punching bag
the alphas all had potential to be good characters but it all becomes a slog of bad teen drama
John's treatment is mostly good but looking back his lack of agency in the story blows (heh)
Yes, it always felt like too much for me. If it was supposed to be funny I didn't get it at all. For me, Jake started as a cool kid with flaws and now he is one of the saddest parts of the whole thing. I find the whole "we were kids but we still have to face ourselves and our actions" interesting but as you said, silly drama had to happen instead of giving it a nice closure.
I also like to think this, frick everything that came after (except for Friendism, it's the only other thing I read and enjoyed)
Nobody knows (or knew) what the frick to do with their characters because they're trying to write arcs without an actual plot.
Haven't read the epilogues or the sequel, but John is fine. He's the hero of the story who fixes everything, gets the girl, and claims the ultimate reward in the end.
