its funny that a movie like hereditary gets heled up as some masterwork of "slow burning horror" when the movie its completely ripping off, Rosemary's Baby, is far slower paced and more subtle. i guess its just because there was such a dearth of good horror movies throughout the 2000s that these a24 movies held with such high regard.

          >the movie its completely ripping off, Rosemary's Baby
Just say you haven't seen both movies. It's okay to admit you're wrong on the internet. Plenty of A24 movies have been deservedly panned. Witch still hangs high above them all but there have been some decent and some lame. The only place I see them spoken of in such a polarized way is here. Even Witch a lot of people didn't like because they didn't get it. I don't even mean that in a snobbish way. The movie had a lot of subtext that was only available to people who knew Puritanical beliefs which isn't exactly important information.

I have seen both movies so I have no idea what your point is. The movie is very clearly a reworking of Rosemary's Baby. also in regards to the Witch
            >The movie had a lot of subtext that was only available to people who knew Puritanical beliefs which isn't exactly important information.

How? Rosemary's Baby is about the husband's ambition and the wife's passiveness and Hereditary is about the mother's grief and the family's disfunction? Just because there's a cult trying to birth the antichrist in both doesn't mean they are thematically similar at all.

I actually assume this anon is correct, the movie probably works a lot better if you really know the time period
Jesus, I think the audience when I saw the witch in theaters was one of the angriest I've ever been in, they HATED it and it was packed

It does and I'm not trying to be snobbish about it. Being less accessible doesn't make it good. It makes it worse for the most part, agreed 100%. But it just happens to overlap specifically on a lot of very underserved genres of horror movies and I think that's why it resonated so strongly with some like me. I had a similar theater experience the last act punctuated with lots of "...what?"s and "what's going on here?"s.

I got it, but the movie wasn't engaging. If The Witch is the cream of the crop when it comes to A24 horror then I don't have high hopes for the rest.

Any recs? I watched this the other night. It was okay. I liked what they were going for but the way the the mom gets disfigured felt really lame and the alligator was criminally underutilized . It should have been some farming accident or something caused by Pearl's negligence. Really though I like dark, occult movies more than horror per se. Ninth Gate, Mouth of Madness, that kind of stuff.

Why is it so hard to find movies that are actually scary? Lots of movies make me laugh, lots of movies make me cry, lots of movies make me think, but seldom do movies make me feel scared.
I've been recommended these countless times but they've never scared me:
    >Noroi
    >Texas Chain Saw Massacre
    >28 Days Later
    >Poltergeist
    >Videodrome

Jumpscares don't fricking count, and even if they did, most jumpscares don't get me. There have been movies that have totally scared me, Funny Games scared me but not during the movie, it was only after it was over and I was thinking about it did it start frickin scaring me. The Outwaters scared me, Hereditary really fricking scared me.

said if you're a well adjusted grown up the best you can really hope for is to be startled. There are some things that might make you feel a little down just because it's so awful to imagine happening to a real person but I haven't been actually SCARED watching a movie since I was watching The Shining without knowing anything about it, home alone at night when I was 12.

Yeah you can be startled, disturbed, or a bit creeped out but you'll never be cowering like a scared child while watching a movie.

Try to find out what scares you, find some movies with that stuff, and then go in with no expectations. Hearing something is scary and then being forced to sit through boring crap ruins it. If that doesn't work, you might want to try a different form of media instead.

I assume you're edgy and desensitized but one of the "scariest" movies for me was shutter island

Obviously it's not a jump scare or horror scary, but it has an engaging story and mystery, and actually an interesting plot so the investment and suspense is much higher in a movie like this than just some clown murdering teenagers or whatever.

I'm not desensitized at all, trust me. I shed a tear for the animal stuff with GotG3. I saw Shutter Island and really liked it. Mental illness is a terrifying concept, being stuck in your own brain. Still wouldn't call it "scary". Very tense, very atmospheric. Great movie. Closest feeling to fear I get from watching stuff is just very matter of fact almost documentary style stuff that could be real. Scene in the original Texas Chainsaw with the hammer and the metal door. That's actually kinda scary the first time you see it come to think of it.

          Anonymous

Then my guess would be you're just super rational and it's hard for you to get immersed in movies because as scary as they may be, you subconsciously know it's not real and some things in reality are just as or more scary

Yeah Shutter Island isn't exactly scary but personally, I enjoy thrillers with good plots much more than jump scarefests and straight horror, so maybe considering watching more thrillers such as that and Silence of the Lambs, even if it's not scary it may be more enjoyable

They filmed this at a local abandoned asylum. Wish I had gone up as a teen before they tore it down, even to take photos. Years later I found out my grandpa had a brother who was moved there when his mother could no longer handle his mental problems created by a childhood illness gone bad. My uncle was a doctor at a VA hospital years later and found out my grandpa who was in the navy helped move him there for better treatment. The family thought he had died in childhood and it wasn't talked about that he was living up at the asylum.
So seeing that movie now has some extra chills for me.
