How come Cinemaphile doesn't talk about this movie more often? Its just as good as die hard. Honestly, such a hidden gem.

bullocks a hot in that
You've got that right.
It’s a fun movie but on Die Hard’s level? No way.
Speed was directed by the cinematographer of Die Hard, Jan de Bont, and has that element in common. It is a bit more incoherent and episodial (elevator-hostage-situation, the bus, the train-ending) than Die Hards scenario, and it lacks the finishing touches and nuances Die Hard has in both the plot, the music and symbolism (it ramps up the actions from relatively realistic to fantasy in a slow but cleaver way, the relationship between John and Holly has substance and is important to the plot, the police/FBI attempts to understand the situation from outside, the coorporate stuff -coke, negotiations, moneymaking, the use of beethoven was a gamble but worked out superbly) because Die Hard built upon an existing source (a novel called The Detective) while Speed was born from use of elevators in Die Hard and combined into a script.
Jan de Bont also directed the absolute diarrhea that was the remake of The Haunting, so despite liking Speed a great deal I will always hold it as a black mark against him.
Meh, you simply don't get it. Sure, the Haunting has a shitty story focusing on the female stupidity of nursing and the acting isn't the greatest. But it's a very beautiful movie with a scenery that is a lost art today. Jan de Bont made it mainly because he love photography, and it should be viewed as such. A story that is a homage to the old dumb horror-flicks from the 50s but with updated and improved cinematography. At least it has several kino moments and a hot Catherine Zeta Jones, which is more one could say about the horror flicks of today.
No, I fricking despise that remake and the stupid theme park looking house is a big part of that, alongside the atrocious script and acting. I adore the original film and the remake did absolutely everything that the original did right, wrong.
Aah, you saw the original before the remake, that makes sense then...
I didn't. I saw the remake when it was new, thought it was crap then. Didn't see the original til last year. But what you said is still phony because it remade a film was wasn't dumb at all, in fact it's a very elegant film.
>A story that is a homage to the old dumb horror-flicks from the 50s but with updated and improved cinematography
This would probably be more valid as a defense if it wasn't a remake of a very clever and suspenseful horror flick from the 60s that was better shot than the newer one to boot.
>Speed was born from use of elevators in Die Hard and combined into a script.
eh?
>Yost's initial script would have the film completely occur on the bus; there was no elevator or subway scene, the bus would have driven around Dodger Stadium due to the ability to drive around in circles, and would have culminated with the bus running into the Hollywood Sign and destroying it.[6] Upon finishing the script, Yost took his idea to Paramount Pictures, which expressed interest in green-lighting the film and chose John McTiernan to direct due to his blockbuster films Predator, Die Hard, and The Hunt for Red October. However, McTiernan eventually declined to do so, feeling the script was too much of a Die Hard retread, and suggested Jan De Bont, who agreed to direct because he had the experience of being the director of photography for action movies, including McTiernan's Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October. Despite a promising script, Paramount passed on the project, feeling audiences would not want to see a movie which takes place for two hours on a bus, so De Bont and Yost then took the project to 20th Century Fox which also distributed Die Hard.[7] Fox agreed to green-light the project on the condition there were action sequences in the film other than the bus. De Bont then suggested starting the film off with the bomb on an elevator in an office building, as he had an experience of being trapped in an elevator while working on Die Hard.[7] Yost used the opening elevator scene to establish Traven as being clever enough to overcome the villain, comparable to Perseus tricking Medusa into looking at her own reflection.[6] Yost then decided to conclude the film on a subway train to have a final plot twist not involving the action on the bus. Fox then immediately approved the project.[7][6]
cheers
they were right, 2 hrs on a bus is some indie flick gimmick, wouldve sucked
yes, but as I said earlier, the final story felt episodical and not enough connected to eachother. Practically none from the hostages in the elevators were relevant for the rest of the film (it would be cool if at least 1 was there that said something like "why do I always get stuck in these situations" and which would make the police think the bomber had a beef with). It's also noticeable how much more of a climax the bus exploding is compared to the train derailing.
>"why do I always get stuck in these situations"
>"why do I always get stuck in these situations"
What makes you say that? I think its comparable.
Die Hard is boring as frick. Speed doesn’t get as stale.
Absolutely on the same level. Die Hard is great, but it's not some standout masterpiece. It's just one of many great action movies from those two decades.
name 3 standout masterpieces from that era
This is the talk from someone that hasn't watched Die Hard multiple times
The perfection of Die Hard is subtle, and is something one have to reflect over to understand.
I have watched Die Hard and Speed many times each and I enjoy them pretty much equally.
Well then, perhaps you're not enough visually alligned to be able to process the difference
Die Hard is THE most competent and entertaining action movie ever made. Show some fricking respesct.
Nah, Die Hard is REALLY well put together as an action film, unusually so for that genre.
Speed is just Die Hard on a bus. DH is one of the most copied movies ever.
Which is fine, because it laid an excellent template for an engaging action film, easily applied to other locations.
>Speed is just Die Hard on a bus.
I must have forgotten the part about the german terrorists boarding the bus to perform a heist.
True. Only a vegana would even compare the two. Females just don't understand Die Hard.
how is the sequel
dogshit
then that's why die hard gets mentioned more
It's not good, but it's not as bad as people pretend either. 3.9 on imdb is ridiculous. I'd give it a 6.
I haven't seen it but it has the infamous reputation of being the worst sequel of all time
It's shit but in a world where Leprechaun Origins, Hellraiser Revelations, Jaws: The Revenge and their ilk exist, I cannot give it anywhere even close to the title of worst sequel ever.
fricking kino
plebs
Da foe is a treasure and must be cherished.
I wish the Star Wars sequel trilogy was only "Speed 2" bad.
Severely lacking in speed.
Because its not enough of a Christmas movie like Die Hard is.
Sudden Death is the best Die Hard clone, sorry Keanugays
>Sudden Death
Based and JCVD-pilled. JCVD had a great run, if he hadn't been a coke addict he could've provided much more kino in his prime.
>Sudden Death is the best Die Hard clone
wrong
That's not even the best Die Hard on an airplane
doesn't have gary oldman villain and has a shit seagal performance
Seagal is in it for like ten minutes.
>shit seagal
You could have just said Seagal.
>it has a wet water scene
>gary oldman villain
gary oldman villain = +100 kino points
>Get ready for Rush Hour
First time I've seen a movie recommend you watch something else.
i hate zoomers
The feeling is mutual, boomer.
most israeli film ever
That's a great movie. As is Speed and Die Hard. What's your point?
speed has 100 times the ratings that one does on imdb
>old movie doesn't have as much ratings as newer movie
no shit
pop quiz
I heard Speed's concept was taken from some asian movie from the 70s about stealing a train, does anyone seen that? Is it any good?
I've created a thread about it before but it didn't get much talk. Anyway Speed has one of the explosions in film history as I see it. It is probably the most cinematically beautiful (the colors of the cloud being black, yellow, red in contrast to the clear blue sky, it has multiple shots from different perspectives, the reflection of the explosion when the passangers reacts to it, the bus driving into a completely new plane (from the looks of it) - destuction of something pure) but it is also too much "expected" and therefore won't give as much of a "punch" as perhaps the ones in Apocalypse Now or Die Hard

have I missed any, and what's your favourite?
I love how abstract the explosion in Alien is.
Nuclear explosions in space are neat.
You've linked T2, but I also enjoy the explosion at Cyberdyne when they explode a whole floor of labs.
Yup, t2 is a movie. It also has the exploding truck with t1000 calmly walking away from the hire, relatively unharmed. Three big ones (and very rememberable) in one single movie, it is crazy.
And I think I've missed many:
Sorcerer
Bridge on the River Kwai
The Dark Knight
Demolition Man
+ several mentioned here

shut the frick up
someone woke up on the wrong side of bed eh?
What is there to talk about? It's just a straightforward action movie, you watch it and that's it.
it's a 4th july movie, that is what we could talk about
and it isn't as sttraightforward as you think when you ponder that Hopper was Keanus sugardaddy who got jealous at bullock and all that crap
Howard Payne is the best part of the whole movie. Dennis Hopper always plays the over-the-top bad guy roles really well.
Can confirm. Absolutely brilliant casting
>Super Mario Bros (1993)
>Speed (1994)
>Waterworld (1995)
He was on a little role for villains there
roll*
>I'd shoot the hostage
what the frick was he thinking???
He was just channeling his inner Unit 777.
No one talks about it because it's just decent. It's not amazing
It's why this board never talks about Schwarzeneggers Raw Deal. Arnold has better movies as does Reeves
On top of it there's better die hard clones out there like Under Siege and Sudden Death so no need to talk about speed.
>Under Siege
>Sudden Death
I won't have you bad mouth Sudden Death. I will throw down a gauntlet and draw a rapier.
That title is much better.
