How come this show went from a surreal comedy with a couple of guest e-celebs to being "every episode stars a YouTube animator"?

But they didn't do it in season 1. If you have a TV show and you want to help your e-buddies out, wouldn't you do it in the first season in case you don't get renewed?

they likely weren't fully aware of how big they were going to blow up and just kept things small and cameo-ey. now that they've hit mainstream success they're probably more able to pay for more guest spots.

Hiring voices, most of whom only read a handful of lines, seems different than an entire episode dedicated to the gimmick of a YouTuber's schtick.

If the other anon is going to count a 2-second clip of AVGN as a "guest star", then I'm going to say there's a distinct difference between guest animation and guest voice.

If you can't piece together what's being said using context clues, then maybe text-based discussion isn't for you. I wouldn't have said "stars an animator" if I wasn't obviously referring to their animation, I would've just said "stars a YouTuber".

In the first season they were given a hard cap on the number of voice actors they could have (which, true fact, is literally the only Chris-chan didn't get to voice the puddle in the murder mystery episode).
Seemingly, things have changed with the second season.

They didnt do it much in season 1 because to guest star in a syndicated cartoon you have to be a member of SAG-AFTRA or a voice actor union which is honestly too much work for most people to consider. So yeah you can blame union mob bosses.

One of the main schticks of the show even back in s1 was the mix of animation styles. Getting online animators to animate characters in their own style is just an extension of this.

A lot of people cite Zach and Michael wanting to give their Newgrounds friends work. What a lot of people probably don't know is that the main executive producer of Smiling Friends (Cody DeMatteis) was also one of the guys behind Off the Air, which is an anthology show that's nothing but animations from YouTube. Since that show recently got cancelled, he's likely using SF as a way of keeping the spirit of OTA alive
