False. David Chase basically admitted in an interview a couple months ago that Tony didn’t die, but that Noah knocked his fricking lights out.
He found his passion for cooking again through realizing that the life his ancestors lived weren't the best but it was simple and no-nonsense, unlike his. The cooking of the rabbit with the special recipe was a way to say that Artie will go back to his roots and try to fix his problems, and that involves not being part of the subplots of a mafia show.

Artie clearly wanted to live their life without actually living it. If i'm not mistaken this happens around the same time he splits up with Charmaine, starts hitting on girls way out of his league.
