They're so drastically different it all depends on people's taste. DB is Goku's adventures, meeting people, learning about the world and himself, he takes the audience on the adventure with him. It has clever writing, lore building, with a sense of danger.

DBZ is fighting, fighting, power level, power level, new boss, NEW BOSS, wait, NEW BOSS???? POWER LEVELS! Think I'm strong now???? JUST YOU WAIT! AARRGGHHH!

You should re-watch DBZ and learn how convoluted, stupid, and sloppy the show is. The consistency is horrible. I know you haven't re-watched either series in years.

Dragonball has like 150 episodes. For comparison the original X-Men show has 75.

        exactly. more than a double.

the thing about x-men is that most people watched x-men when they were kids...nobody watched dragon ball when they were kids. they immediately started watching DBZ.

that's because their brains are fried with short-term dopamine bursts and don't have the mental fortitude for delayed gratification. it shows up in their lives when they can't hold down a job, learn a new skill to further their career, or launch their own business. it's easier to scream about inequality and oppression because they get instant feedback: the dicksucking and cheering of others like them, and the smug feeling of "making the haters angry."

Just bingeread the manga and watch the anime for the fights. It’s way easier to get through over 100 chapters than episodes. You can finish a 20 page chapter is what, 10 minutes? You can get about 7-10 done per day

Dragon Ball Z has the worst editing I've ever seen in an anime
fights are stretched out to take entire episodes
No, we don't need a 5 minute commentary from the peanut gallery every time a character does something cool
The movies have comparatively superior pacing and editing.
Having seen them both I can genuinely only recommend the Z movies, and the Trunks/Bardock specials, to someone who wanted to actually enjoy DBZ

DBZ started so strong. The Raditz build up was the perfect amount of time. Hardly any wasted time, it's very akin to DB. Same with Nappa and Vegeta, there's some time wasting but if the episodes were an hour long, it wouldn't be as bad. But once they get to Namek you see the decline. When Krillin and Gohan spend 30 seconds trying to remember how to make a wish while Dende is like "H-hey, guys...can you hurry up?" while the dragon is literally yelling at them. It's awful. There's a lot of great moments, but for every one great moment there's two bad.

Americans started with Z first, It’s weird because Goku dies in the first 5 episodes but he’s just a random dude to them, they missed his entire childhood story. On another note, I hate when people treat people Z and DB as two different things. There’s no such thing as the OG, the manga from start to finish is called dragon ball. Toriyama told Toei to add a Z to signify the adult goku portion of the story and that it’s coming to an end

Dragon Ball is a light-hearted adventure story with some martial arts tournaments thrown in. It's The Hobbit meets Karate Kid.
Dragon Ball Z is straight-up WWE wrestling. They cut promos and then they fight. And that's spliced in with filler.
It's no coincidence that DBZ took off in America at the exact same time WWE was growing again in popularity. The same kids watching Goku fight Vegeta were also watching Stone Cold fight the Rock.

Dragon ball became about fighting once pilaf ended. Toriyama’s editors told him to add a tournament saga and become a full on battle shonen, it never looked back since.

It should be noted that DB also didn’t take off in popularity even in Japan until that tournament arc.

Is that true? I thought it's popularity was what kept it going past the pilaf arc since it was intended to be much shorter.

      >It’s weird because Goku dies in the first 5 episodes but he’s just a random dude to them
It's irrelevant because newbie kids learned who Goku was by watching his journey through Snake Way and training with King Kai. Yu Yu Hakusho's story began in a similar way

From what I could glean from various Cinemaphile threads, the major pozz elements were that Morph is now nonbinary, and Rogue's ass got nerfed hard. That's about it. If there was something else more egregious, you can bet there would have been endless bait threads about it on this board. That said I won't watch it because I know that season 2 will be take the pozz to a new level

In dragonball's case it's really only americans who's first exposure was z as opposed to the original, though that's not much of an excuse now. It probably had to do censorship laws when it first aired despite dbz being more violent, og db was raunchier and that's a big no. From what I know it aired normally in latam and other parts of asia with minor censorship.
