I love how the show’s way of depicting Artie’s lowest point as a character in Farewell My Little Viking was to have him -almost-squish a random bug. Like as if he actually did it he’d be too far gone but luckily the tire air brought him back.

Artie the Most Obvious Groomer in the World

There was a time where neighbors weren't immediately distrusted and childless adults could be trusted as unofficial supervisers/chaperones, because they would talk to the parents too. This was a method of keeping weirdos like Artie from being totally socially ostracized and still invested in his community. Nowadays, someone like Artie would either be a suicide, a shooter, or posting on Cinemaphile.

No I was a kid at summer camp and the counselors kinda didnt give a shit half the time so we just kinda ran around, found a secluded spot out in the woods or by the lake or something and fooled around.

Ok that's pretty wild then. I think the hardest part would probably be able run into the woods without getting spotted now. But I guess that's just because boomers couldn't stop serial killing in the 80s and 90s so everyone became paranoid.

Because it was real. The person who wrote it based everything off his real-life experiences growing up in a suburb in the late 80s/early 90s, and actually cared about the show. That's rare. Listen bros, it's okay. That feel still exists, you've just lost it because the world isn't mean, it's indifferent. Don't be angry, don't get lost in the nostalgia. Embrace it for the warmth it gives you, use it to inform how you treat other people. Who gives a frick if you're old? Be the Mister Tastee. Be the father or mother a kid like pete would want. It's never too late, and even as summers begin or end, know that everything is alright.

Remake what? Most of Pete and Pete relies on culture that no longer exists. Take even the urban myth, completely gone due to cameras and the internet. Growing up in the 90s just half the fun of being a kid was discovering and hearing storylines about urban myths and legends or local "gossip" about some weirdo down the block who might or might not keep cats stuffed in his freezer. Storytelling as a tribal aspect of society is completely dead, that's the bulk of this show. A remake would be devoid of anything but virtue signalling ESG score baiting political agenda.

When I was a kid there was a house on our street that home schooled their kids. The rest of us would make fun of them for being homeschooled a little, but they would play with all the rest of us in the neighborhood; baseball, football, catching fireflys in the summer, manhunt, etc. Lots of wholesome midwestern stuff. They were pretty normal and didnt seem particularly off socially, didnt keep up with them so dont know how they turned out.

There are communities of home schooling families. You can coordinate activities, extra curriculars, lessons. My father is a retired engineer and teaches math, science, and programming to homeschoolers. All the kids in a particular learning environment don't even need to be the same age if there are teachers with a wide of knowledge... kids are completely capable of self-guiding their education with surprisingly little direction.

Guess who usually homeschools the former group? Teachers who don't want their own kids subject to public schools. People think teaching is easy until they are forced to do it.

basically every statistic shows homeschooled kids are happier and smarter than their public school (and iirc even private) school counterparts.

homeschool is the way to go
it's like putting your kids in college from the jump

but honestly, most kids dont read enough so that school is no big deal. you really shouldnt be learning so much at school, it's more about whittling down what you dont need.

but you only get that if you're significantly more advanced than your peers.

homeschool is great, of course, but you need to find a top tier school to go to by middleschool, or high school, so your kids can socialize.

Grew up in rural Appalachia. We had mesh backpacks for about 2 years and then I started using a Jansport and nobody said a word.
And honestly even in my poor ass hillbilly small town with consolidated schools teaching 5-12 grades I got a good education.
Not perfect, but good. I felt a bit unprepared for college level math so I got a tutor. But I could talk circles around other kids about history, biology, chemistry, computers/programming, plus I got taught trades at home like carpentry, electrical.

So if my absolute shithole of a public school taught me well enough to get me onto a master's program in chem engineering while also giving me enough socialization to be able to connect with others then any other school should be fine.
And we had developmentally moronic kids starting fights, talking over teachers, being rowdy as frick, destroying shit. It was effectively the white version of inner city schools.
Honestly without being surrounded by literal morons in middle and high school I dunno if I would've been prepared for how moronic kids grow into moronic adults-- most of whom developed egos or insecurities and use the bit of power they have over others at work to flex.

And homeschooling isn't what it's cracked up to be.
If you can get tutors for your kid throughout their entire life it's absolutely worth it, but you have to make sure they're going out with other kids to socialize.
Teach your kids life lessons, teach them how to fix the toilet or to keep a stock of batteries for when the power goes out, and how to treat loved ones during times of stress. Teach your kids how to drive manual and how to swim and what to do if they feel peer pressure. Otherwise, get your kid a fricking education and let them make friends with other moronic kids at school. And get them tutors in high school to get them a head start on college or teach them trades to get them a head start at a vocational school.

Rich kids will be the laziest people at any given job, unless it's a tech startup or the family business. Popular kids will peak in high school, flounder in college, and will either be humbled, drop out, or develop a thick layer of jadedness.
moronic kids will Peter principle their way to a managerial position and hold teams hostage for years effectively stymying any progress possible because they developed social aspects not educational ones; moronic kids get good at manipulating teachers into second chances and moronic adults will manipulate bosses and pass the buck to underlings.

The only time I've hated rich kids was in college where they never tried and always bragged. In my line of work rich kids don't talk about being rich, they keep it a secret because it's embarrassing. But plenty of morons get just enough power to shut down good ideas from below because morons don't know how to collaborate and refuse to implement ideas that aren't theirs or a bosses.
A rich kid has never made me leave a job. But plenty of morons have. It's whatever though, job hopping every 1-2 years is the best way to get raises nowadays and I've found about 10 months is my patience breaking point for morons.
As for nerdy kids they split pretty evenly between insufferable and humble. If a nerdy kid is on my team they're usually fine, if they replace the morons for manager positions they're impossible to work for because they won't shut down your ideas-- they'll shut you down, steal your ideas, and pass them off as their own.
It's why any communication I make about changes is in writing and my state is 1 party consent so I record all my conversations with a pen mic. Saved my ass at least thrice now.

Your kid is gonna feel the same way about homeschooling that you felt about public school you idiot.

              >Just throw your kids into the meat grinder bro it's too much work to keep them out of it

Why would I want my kid to socialize with shitskins and morons? Homeschool parents take every opportunity to bring their kids to socialize with decent people, not public school fetal alcohol syndromes.

You guys aren't even parents and never will be so honestly this conversation is just moot court. People taking on positions that sound good but are realistically out of their purview.

The showrunners were contracted by Nickelodeon to produce 30-60 second "shorts." These short films were so popular that the network ordered some full length specials, which were, in turn, popular enough that a full three seasons were ordered. The show was unceremoniously cancelled after the third season, and the reason why is very much to do with OPs question about why the show has so much "SOVL." You see, Pete and Pete was expensive for a 90s Nick show, very expensive. At this time, Nickelodeon was changing their show formats to studio productions, filmed indoors, on a soundstage. If you were to, for some God unknown reason, watch a modern day live action Nick show you'd find that they reuse the same 3-4 sets over and over again throughout the season. Pete and Pete filmed on location in New Jersey, and whether by design or not, it captures that feeling of being a kid when stepping off your stoop and into the neighborhood was like launching yourself into the vastness of space. A studio is a sterile environment, but Pete and Pete's world was the real thing. But, compared to filming inside the studio, setting up shop on location to film a season didn't carry the ROI Nickelodeon was looking for.

Makes sense, I guess. Nick had so many garbage shows, especially the game shows, that I'd think it would make sense to have some high quality shows to attract cable companies to the brand. But, I'm not a businessman.
Comparing it to something like Clarissa Explains it All and there's a massive atmosphere difference in the visuals and environments and it seems much more sterile and TV-like.
I have trouble remembering many other live Nickelodeon shows from back then. Uhh... Secret World of Alice Mack?

What fricking dumbass names both their kids the same name? Did they run out of names and the name shop? Also, why so many pedophiles in the show, and why does the kid have a fricking tattoo on his back?

They didn't want to discriminate against one kid. But then again, if you had actually watched the show you'd know that, which means you're some dumb fricking braindead zoomer, go have a nice day asap.

Watched all the episodes on YT a few weeks back. Great show and so much of it still holds up. It was so interesting going back and seeing old kids shows where it had things like adults smoking still. Season 2 was the peak of the series and season 3 kind of took a dip in quality at the end, but still some good there. It is sad that the Snow Day movie that Nick made was originally meant to be a Pete and Pete movie, but by the time they got the movie out of production hell the cast was too old to play their roles.

The show has so much going for it:
      >References to historical/philosophical concepts that kids may not understand, but the show is written for them anyways. Doesn't dumb anything down for the audience.
      >Lots of indy music, including guest appearances by people from obscure indy bands (Even Iggy Pop shows up in a few episodes)
      >References to films, like Reservoir Dogs, but in a kids show
      >Plot lines that involve kids figuring things out for themselves
      >Super creative with their low-budget. Instead of special effects, they ask an actor to "wrestle" a bowling ball.
I rank Pete & Pete as one of the best shows of all time, up there with The Sopranos and The Wire.

Listen to the end of Hey Sandy from the album, I don't think they ever played it on the show
I don't know how, but it always breaks me inside

I got into the Magnetic Fields years after this show, so revisiting it and hearing Stephin Merritt's music used throughout was amazing.
They used "Why I Cry" when Artie leaves. Holy shit this show is perfect. It leaves me with such a deep melancholy sadness when its over. It takes high art to capture something so magic and pure as the suburbs at twilight and distill it.

Do people typing here really think a parent is going to make a decision to homeschool his kid or not based on a Cinemaphile post? Why do you morons keep typing this. Nobody cares about your opinion, nobody is going to follow your advice. I think homeschooling is completely superior in every single possible manner but I'm not gonna sit here all thread thinking I'm this arrogant to believe someone will take my advice. If you need parental advice from a 4ch post, homeschooling or not is the least of your problems dummy

Season 1 and 2 have DVD Rips
Season 3 was reaired on Noggin in the last decade, so there's probably a high quality rip available. No DVD for season 3 though.
They were pressed and put on pallets that have been sitting in a warehouse in Santa Barbara for 18 years.

Watch it in 480 4:3, the show was produced directly for 90s tvs, the lower quality makes it feel comfier.

All the songs were written by a small band(Polaris) for the show specifically. So it's probably just a stinger for the show by them.

Damn, I wish more productions were like SEGA when it comes to music where they release literally everything, even basically 30s sound assets like this. Because you never know what kind of random melody will hit you hard.

I grew up an hour from where they filmed this. Mister Softee trucks literally delivered ice cream when I was a kid during summer.
