How do zombies beat the military?

I think in almost every zombie movie the military/government is defeated by walking corpses

What about the initial infection having a latent period at first that allows it to get spread across the country by air travel? So then when it turns to actual zombification it happens everywhere at once and the military can't respond?

Yeah, maybe the forst skirmish would end badly for the military, but they wouldn't even send infantry once they got that intel from the first battle. From that point on it would just be turret choppers and napalm.

how many fronts are you really fighting on in a zombie apocalypse?
how many towns and cities would be jokeying to get the general to commit resources.
i mean think if a zombie apocalypse broke out in california.
la , san diego, san francisco and maybe a few others would all be desperate and would want their situation resolved first.
theres no debate discussion or appeal to authority with zombies.
but theres manythings a general needs to consider when leading a campaign.

Would it? I don't know the technical logistics of a tank, but I do know that in a lot of zombie media, you see someone plowing through hordes with a regular car, when in reality a few 200 lb humans could easily total a vehicle.

Tanks are different obviously, but what happens when the guts and bones get wadded up into the tracks? Maybe nothing at all, but I don't know that and neither do you

What the fuck do you know? Never in any part of its design did they consider using it to plow hordes of people down. Tanks are designed to resist bullets and fire cannon shells. Dozens or hundreds of zombies would at minimum gunk up parts and create jams.

The reason is that in TWD, you turn into a zombie regardless of how you die as long as your brain is intact. This wasn't common knowledge at the beginning of the outbreak. So probably what ended up happening was, military bases, safezones, etc. were destroyed from the inside as casualties not directly caused by zombies (so anybody who gets sick, dies of old age or other natural causes, or kills themselves without destroying their head) would reanimate and nobody would initially expect it to happen. The confusion and panic caused by the at the time unexplained reanimations and attacks from inside the bases/safezones, where the enemies should not be, would do a shitload of damage even to a well-equipped and well-trained military.

        Anonymous

This. All it takes is someone to die from injuries, exhaustion, stress, natural causes, or suicide because the world has gone to shit, and suddenly a safe encampent is compromised.

          Anonymous

Yeah, I mean look at what happened in Season 4. Rick's group knew about people reanimating after death regardless of whether they'd been bitten, but they still had a hard time containing the zombies that reanimated from the plague victims. Now imagine that, but in a refugee camp filled with tens of thousands of people. All it takes is one or two zombies slipping through the cracks and going unnoticed long enough to infect a few others, and the situation will quickly spiral out of control.

More importantly, how do zombies beat winter? Wouldn't they all just freeze?

      Anonymous

I imagine they still produce body heat - they'd have to if they're active, moving around, and digesting things. That might be enough to keep them going in places with more mild winters - its not like they care about getting frostbite or anything. In really cold places they might actually freeze enough to stop moving, but there's no reason why that would actually kill them. They'd probably just thaw out in the spring. Though over time the freeze-thaw cycles would probably turn them into mush.

        Anonymous

Freezing damages your cells enough that they would be immobile even after thawed. Muscles rupture and tendons snap due the the expansion and compression.

          Anonymous

Well they should be immobile after they dead but here we are

          Anonymous

Yes, but if we're going by actual realistic biology then the zombies would already be completely immobile and nonfunctional due to the fact that they are decomposing. Can't imagine rotting muscle tissue is very useful, but they still manage to move around in the show, so there must be something about them that allows them to function even in the face of severe deterioration.

They can't produce body heat, they have no blood circulation. That said their limbs would eventually freeze, yes, but then you've got tundra of frozen, not dead zombies waiting to thaw in summer

Blood circulation doesn't produce body heat, cellular processes do. Blood circulation allows that heat to be transported around the body. You're right though that without circulation their extremities would freeze. But the digestive system, at least, must produce some heat assuming it's actually doing something, and the brain must too.
To be honest though, it's kinda pointless to look at TWD-style zombies from such an angle. Nothing about them really makes sense - they shouldn't be able to move around at all with how rotten they are, and the fact that they don't have blood circulation should make it impossible for their organs to function. I can buy the whole "virus hijacks the brain after death" bit, because maybe that is something that could actually be possible (though I doubt a virus could do it - some kind of parasite, possibly), somehow, but aside from that there isn't really anything believable or realistic about them.

            Anonymous

i think a more realistic zombie like infection would be more akin to Flood from halo where it takes over your whole body with some kind of parasite and mutates it or installs its own software that keeps things running beyond brain death in the host

If we go by the law in the walking dead and everybody is already infected with the zombie virus that makes you turn when you die it makes sense. Every day around 180,000 people die globally, with about 35,000 dying in India, 30,000 dying in china, 8,500 dying in the U.S and the other deaths having a pretty even spread around the world.
If you think about 8,500 outbreaks happening per day in the U.S then by the end of the first week you will have nearly 60,000 zombies spread all over the country plus the people they have directly bitten. I'm not really confident that the government or military could handle the situation that quickly considering the different states would have varying public health responses in the initial stages.
That is why I believe a zombie apocalypse would overtake the government and military, it is very hard to deploy resources to that many places at once and there would be an absolute shit fight initially about who is allowed to kill the zombies.

      Anonymous

Even in such a scenario, the zombies wouldn't "overtake" the government/military. The gov/mil would still exist as a powerful entity that's more than capable of defending itself, but they would just be unable to help a large portion of the civilian population.
There's no reason all of the gov/military would just die out.

        Anonymous

The government and military are made up of regular people that still need to live regular lives. The amount of support staff that would be directly or tangentially affected would be enormous and this would seriously compromise the organisation's capacity to survive. The agricultural industry, energy production and social services like the police and hospitals would grind to a standstill. These organisations don't exist in a vacuum, they need other parts of society to function so they can exist as a united front. I think the government and military would fracture into much more localised versions of the original form and get overrun one at a time.

With strategic areas captured and defended, the government should be able to hold its ground with little problem. The difficulty would come in preventing outbreaks within the safe zones, but it's the kind of societal circumstance where any measures can be taken, no matter the ethics.

People would die and things would never be the same, but the military would hold. Men can adapt, military men particularly so. They'd lose friends, family, maybe their own minds, but when the fight is for the survival of the human race, I think they'd fight more effectively and with more dedication they have for any US war since the 40s.

No it wouldn't. You're not fighting soldiers, you're cleaning up infectious contaminants. Gaining territory would be quick and simple and since zombies have extremely limited mobility, once you clear them out of a region, you'd get very little resistance in that area again. Few forces need to be spent defending lines.
              >lolmao
Nice argument. Governors already have access to their local national guard in times of emergency. This would be the same thing

Admittedly I'm a westie, but again, it's not fucking Fallujah. They're zombies, they're not even as intelligent as animals. It's a cleanup, not a battle.

national guard aint the same buddy hate to break it to you.

Ain't the same as the federal army, but they're good enough™. Trained, armed, and organized - they're more than enough to put up a powerful resistance, depending on the state.

On top of that typical zombie hordes are counter productive to their own survival because they rip up bodies.

Zombies only really work when it's the disease itself that kills most people, zombies are a byproduct and the outnumbered survivors where resistant.

I've worked with people who served in every branch of the military, and they are rarely intelligent. Most of the people that join the military do it because they have no idea what they want to do and are fine with being part of a collective and following orders.

Is that something they do now? What are you even talking about? Generals and senior officers are just gonna start wasting innocent people for fun?

And yeah, weapons are limited, but there are still an utter fuckload of them. Amd that has nothing to do with the "intelligence" of the average grunt anyway. I don't understand what your argument is

a true zombie apocalypse is not possible. the problem would solve itself within a couple of years due to basic physics and biology.

The thing that every piece of zombie media gets wrong other than the original Romero movies is that the apocalypse isn't caused by the zombies themselves physically destroying civilization but rather society falling apart due to irreparable existential and spiritual damage.

Death no longer has meaning thus life no longer has meaning. People can't psychologically deal with that so society collapses.

dude our government threw an absolute fit and polarized the american people just becuase of some shitposting.
the king of england sent over british troops becuase he recieved a strongly worded letter from the colonies.
what ever holds the idea of society together is very fragile
its not people that uphold society.
society is upheld by the values of the people. and once those are stressed beyond "virtue signaling" shit breaks down real quick.

like how many military would just go awol becuase they are worried about friends and family back home.
an american soldier never had that come into his mind.

I saw a post about how no zombie apocalypse ever has a chance to kick off because humans are masters at killing, and I pretty much agree. We'd wipe those fuckers out in no time. Even in a everybody's infected and turns when they die Walking Dead scenario we'd come up with countless countermeasures for it.

In general sense we are but that breaks down on a personal level. Most people could not bring themselves to kill what they still perceive as a person, especially a loved one. You also have the wide ranging religious issues of a zombie apocalypse.

Says who? Why do you spout that with such confidence? What study are you referencing? The one in your ass?

Everybody always says this shit, and I think it's a complete load. Give someone a gun and tell them that's the bad guy and they'll kill a fucking family. History has always shown this.
