I don't know the Stranger Things story, but "improvised" in hollywood tends to mean that someone suggested it when they were rehearsing the scene for the blocking and the director decided that it was a good idea.

Newsflash: Movies aren't real life! They're scripted and choreographed. Leaving sex scenes up to the actors' whims and preferences is bound to lead to problematic situations. They're paid to follow direction not improvise and get themselves off.

Not all of them, fortunately. Very often actors do not want any bs overly controlled sex scenes, they are the ones who prefer to improvise and the prudishness hypocrisy rarely comes from the actors or directors.
