Why doesn't magneto control electricity? It's the same thing.

He would need a source of electrical current, since he cant generate charge internally.

Oh yes he can. Have you even played any X-Men game or read any X-Men comics?

same reason why he rarely destroy objects and people by molecular level by using his powers, because the writer said so

You know how villains like Sandman, Electro and Hydro-Man should be capable of a lot more, but are limited by their intelligence, imagination, and lack of scientific knowledge? Magneto's smarter than they are, and more knowledgeable about what his powers can do, but even he's barely scratched the surface of what his powerset should be capable of. Which is probably for the best from a writer's perspective, he's insanely OP already.

Magneto is weird because he's shown doing extremely complex tricks with his powers but somehow can't use them in a far more efficient and straightfoward way like destroying people like Molecule Man or moving objects around like telekinesis.

This is why authors always end up sticking their foot up their mouth by giving new feats to a character, usually made by somebody else.

Being able to control magnetic fields, for example, doesn't need to mean you have control of the essential force of electromagnetism; and being able to control or generate something, usually doesn't mean you have absolute control of it with perfect detail. For a simple example we can all apply kinetic energy to things, but we can't do it without touching it or more than our muscles can generate, our fuel (food) could produce, or our cells could process. We can use more than enough force to break the hardest material, but we need a medium for that force to actually be applied in a meaningful way (hammer and nail, for example)

The moment you make a character do something utterly ridiculous and out of what was within their boundaries, you open the door on asking "Ok, then why not this other thing?" and the answer is always "Because then we will run out of stories with this character".

      Electro does that

electricity is the discharge between electromagnetic fields. electricity is essentially creating polarized fields and releasing their energy almost simultaneously, which isn't stable or maintaining a field

      Polaris does electromagnetic fields

Magneto originally just controlled ferrous metals

      >Why doesn't magneto control electricity? It's the same thing.
He controls the natural magnetic fields created by electrons when they move.
He can't make them actually move in any meaningful way.

If you want an autistic scientific explanation: He excites the electrons trapped in atoms and undoes their momentum cancelation from being in pairs. Thus he can affect all matter and do all kinds of wonky shit. But in practice, you only see immediate effects on metals and he has to get really intense to do anything else.

At BEST, he could induce electric tension on things by simulating an electric coil's magnetosphere.

Magneto is too overpowered for the X-Men, most of his defeats were blatant plot armor

So is Professor X. One good hit on chromedome and Magneto's toast. You don't even need Onslaught's exotic powers, just keep the base power of the two and one should be unstoppable.

          >Helmet that blocks mental attacks
Magnetism to crush skull from the outside in.

In a fight Wolverine is one of the weakest guys on the team. He's a little feral shit with knives, that is not allowed to cut anyone because we do not want a top selling villain to die, so he cannot use his only weapon. So you're left with a street level guy with no enhanced anything, and weapons he is not allowed to use, favcerolling into trouble against guys that can toss mountains and control fundamental forces.

The real problem is the team dynamics. Everybody else on the X-Men have a lot more useful or powerful abilities than Wolverine, so a guy whose forte is stabbing and being a bit harder to put down for good isn't very impressive.

I think the reason why they allow him to be the one to kill people while others tend to hold back a lot on doing so is to make him seem useful to the team. Which is kind of a hard thing to argue now since damn near everybody in Marvel has killed.

He's the guy that gets hurt really bad just to show the rest of the team the villains is super dangerous.

I never understood that sentiment. Someone being able to mess up Colossus through his armor, or whatever resident tough guy is on the roster, is far more compelling on selling that someone is a real motherfricker to deal with, but Wolverine's flesh isn't enhanced in any way, so him getting disemboweled, melted, and torn to pieces just tells me that running at a character that can destroy tanks with a stare and can throw down with the Hulk is just really fricking stupid on his part.

I don't understand why Wolverine keeps picking fights with Magneto, and is usually the first guy to jump at him to attack. You would think he would avoid Magneto completely any time it comes up.

Are you guys seriously all too young to remember this happening and Wolverine having bone claws for like a year?

      >and Wolverine having bone claws for like a year?
It was closer to 7 years, they even did a fakeout story where they teased him getting the adamantium back for Wolverine #100 but he went totally feral instead. But it's oddly the exception to the average Wolverine vs Magneto fight. On paper it's an easy win for Magneto, but in reality magnetism is just no match for getting clawed.

In that story, Logan was supposed to have carved a big X-shaped wound onto Magneto's chest, but 90s Marvel wouldn't allow that to be shown. He reacts like he's been wounded by Logan, but it's completely bloodless.
