I dont know why people laugh at this when it happens all the time. Creators regret there creations. Look at the women who invented the Winchester rifle. Its called having a conscious

        >the women who invented the Winchester rifle
She didn't invent anything moron, she inherited the family fortune. Her guilt makes some sense since she benefited from something she perceived as being evil despite not committing that evil herself.

Oppenheimer is a tard who willfully and voluntarily devoted himself to creating a weapon capable of mass death and then decided it was le bad when it was used for exactly that.

At the time if the bombing Oppenheimer wasn't some whining wreck. There a big difference between measuring how many thousands of tons of equivalent tnt a bomb produces, its another thing to see pictures of the people whos skin was hanging off of their rotting frames, or the water cisterns in the city center packed with people who got boiled alive into a sludge, or the pictures of the children with grotesquely inflated and weeping flesh from the radiation. Of course Oppenheimer regretted his part in this invention. Especially considering that the invention was now completely in control of people who would use it gleefully and use it as a lever to control the entire world. Its our worst invention. If you disagree thats ok, youre wrong.

Noone knew exactly what the bombs would do to a populace. Hiroshima want even the deadliest bombing raid of the war. Firebombing of cities was horrifically deadly as well. The horror is that it was ONE BOMB and more were on the way to production with no end in sight. The entire world at the whim of US military command. Scientific type people get tunnel vision very easily where they exclude anything but the pursuit of their goal.
Everyone wanted to just end the war, the bomb ended up ushering in a entirely different and deadlier world order. One where we could kill off all life on the planet for the first time ever. Wouldnt you regret contributing to that even if its to beat the germans?

The lighting the atmosphere was a hypothesis very early in the project and was discarded as impossible.

The project wasnt "hey lets see if a bomb is possible" it was "The bomb is an eventuality we need to have it first".

Meanwhile, Truman "did a little jig" in the oval office when he was told that the Hiroshima bombing raid was a success.

On his death bed his biographer asked him if he had any regrets from his time as president, and he did not say using the atomic bomb. Instead he said that he most regretted signing the bill that created the CIA.

I hope they show the Norwegian commandos who get sent to destroy the German occupied heavy water facility that effectively neutered the German bomb project.

        Anonymous

Germany didn't have much uranium besides what they captured from Belgian docks. Of course they could set up mines in Germany by taking the time and effort to locate and create a mine to contain a mineral for a weapon you don't even know works yet is a lot of expense for a low chance of pay off. At least they already had the capabilities to produce rocket fuel so they concentrated on V2s instead.

          Anonymous

          >low chance
Physicist the world over knew the bomb would work. Uranium is not hard to find and the gun type bomb was of trivial complexity. The biggest problem of the time was separating u-235 OR making the jump to plutonium production. With all of that heavy water, they could have started plutonium production. You know, if they werent turbo fuqq'd already. But the Allies couldnt be sure that they werent as far along production as them. Britain gave the USA a huge lead for fricking free. Germany cucked itself by kicking out all of the israeli scientists.

            Anonymous

Plutonium Bombs were only possible after considerable research into Uranium. The allies knew they Germans could possibly make Plutonium Bombs even though Uranium bombs would be impossible for them due to needing large quantities to separate out the less common "enriched" kind. This ids why they destroyed the heavy water facilities because the allies knew this was the only viable path for Germany. The Germans could always piggy back off the research they could obtain through espionage the same way the Soviets could. "Having all le good scientists XD dumb nazis" had nothing to do with it.

I specifically said they didn't need to do uranium research because they could just steal what the allies figured out. However the allies had a head start and knew that once their info was stolen the Germans could make Plutonium Bombs so they went out to destroy their capabilities.
